Chapter 196 - Romantic Tension in the Shadow Mage’s Lair

The Next Joint Operation – Romantic Tension in the Shadow Mage's Lair

The chaos of the Black Market slowly faded behind them as Andras and Vanessa stepped out of the underground hall.

The air was cool, the city only just waking, but the two young hunters were already following the next lead.

The Grey Master's final word echoed in their minds:

"…Umbra…"

A name.

A shadow.

A legend.

And now their target.

The Clue – An Abandoned Tower at the Edge of the City

Vanessa led the way.

On the outskirts, behind the old walls, stood a crumbling tower unused for years.

Locals claimed it was haunted.

In reality…

"This was one of Umbra's old hideouts," Vanessa said quietly. "I found records about it in the Dolermo family archives. My father… investigated him many times."

Andras nodded.

"Then we're in the right place."

The air around the tower was colder, as if the walls themselves swallowed the light.

The entrance stood half‑open, as if someone had been there recently.

Vanessa stopped at the threshold.

"Ready?"

Andras smiled.

"With you? Always."

Vanessa's eyes glimmered for a moment.

Inside the Tower – Shadows and Traps

The interior was dark, lit only by a few flickering candles.

The air smelled of dust and old magic.

Shadows danced on the walls as if alive.

Vanessa drew her dueling sword.

"Umbra always leaves traps behind. Watch everything."

Andras gripped his staff, channeling a faint spark of lightning into its tip.

The blue glow illuminated the surroundings.

"My future‑sight helps. But… it's not perfect."

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Then I'll watch over you."

Andras raised an eyebrow.

"I thought I was watching over you."

Vanessa smiled.

"Then let's watch over each other."

Deep inside the tower, a staircase led downward.

Strange black seals pulsed on the walls.

Andras touched one.

The future‑sight crystal flared.

A flash:

a shadow lunges forward,

Vanessa falls back,

Andras shields her with lightning,

the trap activates.

Andras grabbed Vanessa's wrist instantly.

"Stop. Trap."

Vanessa froze.

"Where?"

"There." Andras pointed at the wall.

Vanessa leaned closer and touched the seal.

"This… is shadow magic. If it activates, a shadow creature attacks us."

Andras nodded.

"Then we avoid it."

But Vanessa smiled.

"Or…"

She stepped closer to Andras — so close her breath brushed his cheek.

"…we jump over it."

Andras's eyes widened.

"What?"

Vanessa grabbed his hand.

"Trust me."

And before Andras could say anything, Vanessa sprinted forward and leapt — a graceful, acrobatic motion — over the trap, pulling Andras with her.

They landed on the other side — in each other's arms.

Vanessa leaned against his chest, still holding his hand.

"See? I told you it would work."

Andras laughed.

"Next time, warn me first."

Vanessa looked up at him.

"But this way is much more exciting."

Deep in the Tower – The Romantic Moment

In the basement of the tower, a large circular chamber opened before them.

Black seals pulsed on the walls, the air was cold, and in the center stood a stone table covered in parchments.

Vanessa slowly walked around the room.

"This is Umbra's workshop. This is where he created the seals."

Andras stepped to the parchments.

The stat‑lens activated.

Notes:

– "The high councillor is ready."

– "The head of the Dolermo family knows too much."

– "The chameleon is prepared."

– "Next target: Wolfwood."

Andras froze.

"Vanessa… look at this."

The girl stepped beside him and read the lines.

Her eyes widened.

"He… wanted to kill you."

Andras nodded.

"Seems I'm the next target."

Vanessa slowly took his hand.

"I won't let that happen."

Andras looked up at her.

"Really?"

Vanessa stepped closer — so close their noses nearly touched.

"Yesterday you saved my life. Today I saved yours."

Her voice was soft, warm, filled with emotion.

"And if Umbra wants you… then he gets me too. Along with my sword."

Andras smiled.

"I think… we make a good team."

Vanessa laughed quietly.

"The best."

For a moment, silence fell.

The cold shadows of the tower vibrated around them, but between the two young fighters something entirely different vibrated:

trust, tension, and something more than a simple alliance.

Vanessa slowly released his hand.

"Come. We still have more clues to find."

Andras nodded.

"With you, anywhere."

Vanessa blushed — only for a moment, but Andras noticed.

And in the depths of the tower, in the lair of the shadow mage, in the heart of danger, something new began to unfold between them.

Umbra's First Attack – The Darkness Moves

Deep in the tower, in Umbra's abandoned workshop, the air was cold, as if the walls themselves were holding their breath.

The seals pulsed on the stone walls, and the candle flames danced strangely, unnaturally.

Andras and Vanessa stood side by side, leaning over the parchments, when the air suddenly changed.

As if someone… or something… was watching them.

Vanessa instinctively moved closer to Andras.

"Do you feel that?" she whispered.

Andras nodded.

"Yes. As if… someone is here."

The future‑sight crystal in his right eye suddenly flared.

A flash:

a shadow bursts from the wall,

Vanessa falls back,

Andras shields her with lightning,

the chamber goes dark,

a voice laughs in the darkness.

The vision vanished as quickly as it came.

Andras grabbed Vanessa's wrist instantly.

"Now. Move!"

The Attack – Umbra Reveals Himself

A shadow tore itself out of the wall, as if darkness itself had taken form.

A long, thin figure — faceless, bodiless, yet moving with disturbingly human motions.

Vanessa instinctively leapt back, but the shadow was faster.

The blade it held wasn't metal — it was pure black magic.

Andras thrust his staff forward.

"Lightning Wall!"

Blue light burst from the staff's tip, forming an electric shield around them.

The shadow blade struck it — sparks flew everywhere.

Vanessa stepped beside him, drawing her dueling sword.

"This… this isn't human. It's a shadow creature!"

Andras nodded.

"Umbra sent it. Or… it is Umbra."

The creature attacked again.

Fast. Too fast.

Vanessa barely blocked the strike — the blade sliced past her face, cutting off a strand of her hair.

"That was close!"

"Keep your distance!" Andras shouted.

"Me? You're the mage!"

"I said it first!"

Vanessa laughed — even at death's door.

"That's why I like you, Wolfwood. You can argue even in the middle of chaos."

Andras blushed.

He had no time to respond.

The shadow attacked again.

The Fight – Two Styles, One Rhythm

Vanessa lunged forward, her dueling sword flashing in the dark.

Her movements were fast, graceful, deadly.

Andras moved behind her, wielding lightning magic:

lightning strike,

electric touch,

lightning blade,

lightning net.

The two fighters moved in perfect harmony.

Vanessa was the master of fast, precise, needle‑like attacks.

Andras was the tactical, future‑sighted, lightning‑swift mage.

But the shadow creature did not weaken.

In fact… it seemed to grow stronger.

The seals on the walls flared.

Vanessa stepped back.

"This… this is Umbra's energy! It's feeding from the seals!"

Andras slammed his staff into the ground.

"Then we cut the source!"

Lightning raced across the floor and shattered one of the seals.

The shadow creature screamed — a twisted mix of human and something else.

Vanessa lunged and drove her blade into the creature's body.

It staggered, faltered.

"Now!" Vanessa shouted.

Andras raised his staff.

"Lightning Strike!"

Blue light slammed into the shadow.

The chamber flashed white.

The shadow creature tore apart and dissolved into smoke.

The seals went dark.

Silence fell.

The Romantic Moment – After the Danger

Vanessa leaned against the wall, breathing hard.

Her hair was messy, her clothes dusty, her face flushed.

Andras stepped toward her.

"You okay?"

Vanessa looked up at him.

Her eyes sparkled — not with fear, but with adrenaline.

"I'm alive. And you?"

"Alive. Because of you."

Vanessa smiled.

"Because of us."

For a moment, the two simply looked at each other.

The cold shadows of the tower vibrated around them, but between them something entirely different vibrated:

trust, tension, and something more than a simple alliance.

Vanessa gently touched Andras's arm.

"Wolfwood… if Umbra really wants you… then he gets me too. Along with my sword."

Andras stepped closer.

"He won't reach you. I won't let him."

Vanessa laughed softly.

"I think… we make a dangerously good pair."

"The best."

Vanessa blushed — only for a moment, but Andras noticed.

Deep in the tower, in the heart of darkness, something new was born between them.

And Umbra… now knew he would not face them alone.
