Chapter 197 - Umbra’s True Appearance - Darkness Takes Form

Umbra's True Appearance – Darkness Takes Form

Deep in the tower, after the seals went dark, there was silence for several long seconds.

The air remained cold, but the vibrating, threatening energy vanished.

The candle flames slowly regained their natural glow.

Andras and Vanessa stood side by side, still charged with the aftershocks of battle.

Between them, tension vibrated — danger, adrenaline, and something else neither dared to name.

Then…

the silence broke.

A slow, quiet clapping echoed from the depths of the tower.

Clap.

Vanessa tensed.

Andras raised his staff.

The rhythm of the clapping was slow, mocking, dripping with amusement.

"Bravo," a voice said from the darkness. "Truly, bravo. I thought the chameleon would be enough. I thought the high councillor would be enough. I thought the seal would be enough."

The voice was cold as a winter night.

And yet… somehow familiar.

In the corner of the chamber, the darkness shifted.

As if peeling itself off the walls.

The black shadow slowly took shape:

a tall figure,

a long cloak,

a mask covering the face,

and behind the mask, two glowing red eyes.

The air dropped in temperature.

The candle flames trembled all at once.

Vanessa stepped forward, sword raised.

"Umbra."

The shadow mage bowed — elegantly, theatrically, as if performing on a stage.

"The Black Raven. The little shadow of the Dolermo family. And the young mage of the Wolfwood house. What a pair."

Andras stepped forward.

"Why did you kill the head of the Dolermo family? Why did you control the criminal network?"

Umbra straightened slowly.

"Because peace… is bad business."

His voice was cold, but filled with pleasure.

"War, however… is profitable. Chaos… is profitable. Fear… is profitable."

Vanessa clenched her fist.

"You… you destroyed my family."

Umbra laughed.

"I merely accelerated the inevitable. The Dolermo family knew too much. The high councillor was too weak. The chameleon was too slow."

The red eyes turned to Andras.

"But you, Wolfwood… you are interesting. Your future‑sight… your lightning… your two elements…"

His voice deepened.

"I don't want to kill you. I want to use you."

Vanessa instantly stepped in front of Andras.

"You won't have him."

Umbra fell silent.

The red eyes slid over Vanessa's form.

"The Dolermo girl… always too fiery. Like her father."

Vanessa trembled with rage.

"I'll kill you. I swear I'll kill you."

Umbra slowly raised his hand.

The air vibrated.

The seals on the walls flared again — but now far stronger.

Andras's eyes widened.

"Vanessa! Back! It's a trap!"

Umbra's voice echoed from every direction at once.

"This is only our first meeting, Wolfwood. The game begins now."

The seals exploded all at once.

Blinding light.

Smoke.

Darkness.

When the smoke cleared, Umbra was gone.

After the Danger – The Romantic Approach

Vanessa leaned against the wall, her chest rising and falling quickly.

The force of the explosion had shaken her, her clothes were dusty, her hair messy.

Andras stepped toward her.

"You okay?"

Vanessa looked up at him.

Her eyes still glimmered with anger, but her gaze softened when it met his.

"Yes… just…"

She stopped.

"I'm afraid Umbra has made you a target too."

Andras stepped closer.

"I'm not afraid of him. Because I'm not alone."

Vanessa blushed.

Her voice grew quieter.

"Wolfwood… I…"

Andras took her hand.

"We'll catch him together."

Vanessa nodded slowly.

"Together."

Tension vibrated between them — danger, trust, and something deeper growing with every moment.

The tower's darkness surrounded them.

But the two of them… brought light into it.

The Next Step – The Hunt for Umbra Begins

Vanessa released Andras's hand, but only slowly, as if she didn't want to.

"Umbra escaped. But he left a trace. The energy of the seals… can be followed."

Andras nodded.

"Then let's hunt him down."

Vanessa smiled.

"Young Wolf and the Black Raven… back in action."

They headed toward the tower's exit.

And in the depths of the darkness, somewhere beneath the city, Umbra was already waiting for them.

The game had begun.

Umbra's Next Trap – The Shadow Game Deepens

Leaving the tower, Andras and Vanessa could still feel the cold residue of Umbra's presence in the air.

The energy of the seals slowly dispersed, but the darkness… did not vanish.

It merely retreated.

Waiting.

The city streets were quiet, the sun already high, but even daylight couldn't fully dispel the ominous feeling Umbra had left behind.

Vanessa pulled her cloak tighter around herself.

"Do you feel it?" she asked softly. "As if… we're being watched."

Andras nodded.

"Umbra isn't running. He's playing with us. And now… he chooses the battlefield."

Vanessa glanced sideways.

"Then we prepare. The next move is his."

And Umbra… was counting on exactly that.

The Beginning of the Trap – A False Lead

In the city square, an imperial courier ran toward them.

Panting, sweating, hands trembling.

"Young Wolf! Miss Dolermo!" he shouted. "Urgent message from the Emperor!"

Andras and Vanessa exchanged a look.

The courier handed them a sealed parchment.

The seal was real.

The paper was real.

The ink was real.

But the content… was not.

The parchment read:

"Umbra is hiding in the Royal Library. The source of the seals is located there. Proceed immediately."

Vanessa's head snapped up.

"The Royal Library? That's… impossible. That place is full of magical defenses. Umbra can't get in."

Andras folded the parchment slowly.

"He doesn't need to get in. It's enough if we go in."

Vanessa's eyes widened.

"A trap."

"A trap," Andras echoed.

The courier suddenly convulsed.

A red light flashed on his chest.

Vanessa shouted:

"No! The seal!"

But it was too late.

The courier's throat collapsed, and he fell dead.

Umbra's message was clear:

"Come to the library, Wolfwood. I'm waiting."

The Royal Library – The Site of the Trap

The library was a massive building with tall columns, a gilded gate, and magical defenses thousands of years old.

One of the most sacred places in the city.

But now… something had changed.

The gate stood open.

The inner lights were extinguished.

The air was cold, as if the books themselves were afraid.

Vanessa stopped at the entrance.

"This feels wrong. Very wrong."

Andras raised his staff.

"Umbra is here. I can feel it."

The interior of the library was dark, only a few candles flickering.

Shadows moved between the shelves — not naturally, but as if someone were controlling them.

Vanessa moved closer to Andras.

"Wolfwood… if anything happens…"

Andras smiled at her.

"It won't. I'm here."

Vanessa blushed, but didn't let go of his hand.

The Trap Activates – Umbra's True Power

In the center of the library, a huge circular hall opened.

Black seals pulsed on the floor.

Shadows crawled along the walls.

The air was cold, as if death itself breathed on them.

In the center of the hall stood a figure.

Umbra.

But now… in his full form.

Shadows swirled behind his cloak as if alive.

Two glowing red eyes burned behind his mask.

His voice came from every direction at once.

"Welcome back, Wolfwood. And welcome to you as well, Raven."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"What do you want from us?"

Umbra slowly raised his hand.

The seals flared.

The walls of the library began to tremble.

"Only one thing," he said softly. "The future. Your future. And for you… to kneel before me."

The seals exploded all at once.

The hall went dark.

And from the darkness, dozens of shadow creatures emerged.

Vanessa raised her sword.

"Wolfwood… this is too many."

Andras lifted his staff.

"Then we do it together."

Vanessa smiled.

"Always together."

Umbra's laughter echoed.

"Show me what you're capable of. The game begins now."

The creatures charged.

The trap closed.

And the battle began.
