Chapter 5 - Chapter 005

On the third day after arriving in this world, Di Wu was preparing to go out for work, and of course Karl wanted to go with her.

Since Karl had already taken care of the necessary paperwork the day before, he had even hypnotized the staff member responsible for processing it and arranged to be assigned to Di Wu's side. That way, his sudden appearance wouldn't seem suspicious.

Di Wan told Karl to wait with the company assistants. With Karl's speed, it took him almost no effort to appear at the entrance of her company the very next second.

Because he was introduced as a private bodyguard—someone officially arranged—Karl waited on the first floor with Xiao Ling and the other assistants before driving to Di Wu's home.

The day before, Di Wan had thought Karl's outfit was too eye-catching. So, imitating Superman from television, she made him wear a pair of black-framed glasses. Strangely enough, once Karl put them on, both his presence and appearance seemed to drop several levels instantly.

It was not yet six in the morning. The streets were empty, with no traffic congestion. When they arrived downstairs at Di Wan's apartment, Xiao Ling and Karl went upstairs to fetch her luggage.

There were three large suitcases. The young assistant was slim and petite—no matter how strong she was, she couldn't lift luggage weighing dozens of pounds each. Karl carried them into the elevator one by one. Xiao Ling dragged one, and Di Wan carried a bag containing her phone and sunglasses.

They were traveling far this time. Since it was a travel program, she had packed clothes suitable for all seasons. Not knowing the climate of the destination, Di Wan had made very thorough preparations.

They would be traveling for about half a month without additional staff. Karl joined the team because the production crew required a professional bodyguard. Although he was Di Wu's private bodyguard, when it came to the crew's safety, he was responsible for everyone.

By six o'clock, Shanghai's streets were already filling with pedestrians, though traffic remained smooth. Karl drove for an hour and a half to reach Hongqiao Airport.

The plane was scheduled to depart at 8:40 a.m. It was now 7:30—more than enough time for boarding procedures.

The show's budget wasn't large, but the concept was good: one person enjoying a slow-paced life while visiting and exploring travel cities.

The plane departed on time without delay. Karl accompanied Di Wan into first class. The assistant wasn't needed for the flight, so after dropping them off, she returned.

"That's really an incredible ability."

After sitting down in first class, Di Wan looked at Karl beside her and said with a sigh.

Karl turned to her, smiled slightly, and said nothing.

Di Wu didn't think Karl wanted to take her away, but she couldn't deny that he was extraordinary. A man who could casually sacrifice himself for a country was now by her side to protect her. Sometimes she found it almost absurd—how important was she, really?

Once the plane took off, with no internet access and no phone to play with, she took out a book titled Alone and began reading.

Seeing her immersed in the book, Karl closed his eyes and rested.

The flight would take about eleven hours. At lunchtime, a flight attendant came to ask for meal preferences. Di Wan and Karl ordered sushi and steak. Karl didn't actually need to eat, but not eating for ten hours would attract unwanted attention and questions.

After lunch, Di Wan prepared to rest. She had woken up very early and felt drowsy after eating. Karl remained the same—eyes closed, silent.

Five hours into the flight, Karl suddenly opened his eyes and frowned as he looked out the window.

Dark clouds blanketed the sky. Thunder roared. Rain poured down violently. Such weather was extremely unfavorable for flight. The plane began to shake violently, waking Di Wan.

"Please fasten your seat belts. Due to weather conditions, turbulence may occur during the flight. Rest assured, it will stabilize shortly."

The captain personally addressed the passengers to calm them. Turbulence during severe weather was normal. No one found it strange, and they obediently fastened their seat belts.

Only Karl sensed something else.

A powerful energy had appeared in the sky—so powerful that it frightened him. It was the first time he had felt such overwhelming force, to the point where he felt he might only be able to protect himself.

"Unfasten your seat belt. I'm taking you out of here."

His tone was urgent. The unknown danger filled him with intense dread. If he stayed on the plane, he wouldn't be able to protect Di Wu.

Confused, Di Wan looked at him. The turbulence was so violent she couldn't even sit steadily, much less unbuckle herself. She didn't follow his instructions.

Karl leaned over and unfastened her seat belt himself. Ignoring her shocked expression, he picked her up.

Suddenly being grabbed by a man made Di Wu extremely uncomfortable. She struggled desperately. Other passengers began shouting at Karl, but the violent shaking prevented anyone from helping her.

"Crack!"

"Boom!"

A deafening thunderclap—followed by lightning striking the aircraft.

"Ahhh!"

Panic erupted throughout the cabin. The plane began to plunge downward. Luggage fell from overhead compartments. Passengers clung to their seat belts, hoping for safety.

Terrified, Di Wu stopped struggling and buried herself in Karl's arms. At this moment, he was her only protection.

Karl held her tightly, staring grimly out the window. It was too late. Leaving now was better than staying in the cabin. He hadn't expected danger to arrive so quickly.

"Crack!"

Another bolt of lightning split the fuselage open. Hurricane-force winds rushed inside.

Karl's battle suit appeared on his body. Carrying Di Wu, he flew out through the breach.

She shut her eyes tightly and buried her face in his chest.

"Boom!"

Countless bolts of lightning rained down. These were no ordinary bolts—they contained immense energy. Each strike caused Karl pain, but his powerful healing ability restored him instantly.

Lightning tore through the sky. He had to leave this area quickly. Even if he survived, Di Wu would not.

Space itself began cracking under the barrage of lightning. The plane vanished amid the storm.

Karl saw a spatial rift open ahead. Alone, he would never enter it—but the lightning would kill the woman in his arms.

He flew into the rift, wrapping her in his cape. Energy radiated from him, shielding her from the environmental shock.

Gunfire echoed.

Alien forces swept through a city, firing upon anyone below. Buildings lay in ruins.

"Sir, two humans have been detected falling rapidly from above."

Tony looked up. Through his armor's magnification, he saw a man in a red cape holding a girl as they plummeted.

"What? Superman?"

Karl halted midair, hovering while holding the unconscious Di Wu. Around him was chaos.

The Chitauri forces emerging from the space portal saw him flying and opened fire.

Karl's eyes turned red. Twin beams instantly wiped out the alien forces in the sky.

He didn't fully understand what was happening—he had just arrived in the middle of a battlefield. But seeing humans below and aliens pouring from space, he realized it was an invasion.

Below, only a few were resisting. Most civilians were unarmed and fleeing in terror.

"Hey guys! Superman is actually here! Isn't he supposed to be on TV?"

Tony's voice rang through the comms in disbelief.

The Avengers looked up and saw him intercepting the Chitauri emerging from the portal. Hope surged among them.

Thor watched as Karl's gaze obliterated a massive hundred-meter alien beast. For a moment, Thor felt overshadowed—then reassured himself he could do the same.

He summoned lightning and struck back confidently.

Karl grew impatient. More aliens kept pouring out. He needed to check on Di Wu.

His eyes sharpened. Taking a deep breath, he blew toward the portal.

A devastating gust tore through the Chitauri ranks. Even the massive warship deep within the portal shattered instantly.

The remaining Chitauri on Earth collapsed lifelessly.

The Avengers stared in stunned silence.

"Cool. Superman really isn't small-time," Tony joked over comms.

Karl carried Di Wan toward Stark Tower, landing on the rooftop. He scanned her carefully with X-ray vision—twice—to ensure she was unharmed.

"She should be fine," Tony said, flying in through shattered glass. "I can call my private doctor."

Before further discussion—

"Stark, do you copy? A nuclear missile is inbound."

"How long?"

"Three minutes. It'll destroy the city."

Tony moved to intercept—but Karl stopped him.

"You take care of her. I'll handle it."

"Fine. But try not to throw it at us."

Karl vanished, appearing beside the missile. To him, it crawled like a snail.

In less than a second, he delivered it through the portal.

Tony blinked as Karl reappeared.

"You actually delivered a nuke?"

"I delivered it."

"It's time to close the portal. Our Superman makes a pretty good courier."

He turned to Natasha to shut down the device.
