Chapter 19 - SPOILED DAYS

Morning sunlight streamed through the tall windows of Finch Manor, painting the room in soft gold. Audrey awoke to the faint aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm pastries drifting through the halls. A soft knock came at the door.

"Good morning, Audrey," came Nathan's voice from the doorway, carrying a gentle warmth. "Breakfast is ready, and I've made your favorite pancakes."

Audrey smiled, feeling a comforting ease she hadn't felt in a long time. Even in her own home, mornings had rarely felt this gentle, this cared-for.

Downstairs, Old Man Fin was already seated at the dining table, a plate of fresh fruit and warm tea in front of him. He gave her a small nod of greeting, his eyes sharp but kind. "Good morning, Audrey. I trust you slept well?"

"Very well, sir," she replied.

"You look radiant today," he added with a faint smile, folding his newspaper. "Nathan tells me you've been enjoying your time here."

"I have, sir. It's… peaceful," Audrey said softly, sipping her tea.

Nathan joined her, placing a small tray with more pastries and a cup of cocoa in front of her. "I thought you might like a little extra today," he said casually, though there was a quiet pride in his gesture.

Audrey laughed softly, warmth spreading in her chest. "You're spoiling me."

Nathan shrugged with a grin. "You deserve it."

After breakfast, Nathan suggested a gentle stroll through the gardens. Old Man Fin insisted on accompanying them, casually pointing out rare flowers and sharing stories of the mansion's history. Audrey walked between them, her hand occasionally brushing Nathan's sleeve, feeling the quiet security of their company.

Later in the day, Nathan surprised her with a small gift—a leather-bound journal, its pages crisp and inviting. "For your thoughts," he said, handing it over. "I figured you might like to record these peaceful days."

Audrey's fingers traced the edges of the journal. "It's beautiful. Thank you."

Old Man Fin, ever observant, smiled faintly. "You see, Audrey, life need not always be hurried or complicated. It's the simple moments that matter—peace, attention, and care. Nathan seems to understand that well."

The afternoon was spent quietly. Audrey read in the sunlit library while Nathan worked nearby, occasionally pausing to bring her a cup of tea or a small snack. Old Man Fin moved through the mansion, ensuring everything was as it should be. No interruptions, no pressure—just a rhythm of calm, a household operating in quiet harmony.

Evenings were gentle. Nathan helped Audrey prepare a light dinner, laughing softly as she playfully corrected his attempts at cooking. Old Man Fin occasionally peeked into the kitchen, nodding in approval at the easy domesticity of it all.

After dinner, they moved to the lounge, settling into the plush sofas with soft blankets. Nathan poured wine for himself and a fresh juice for Audrey. The mansion was still, illuminated only by the soft glow of the lamps and the distant city lights.

"You're quite spoiled," Audrey said softly, leaning against Nathan's shoulder.

He smiled, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "And you deserve every bit of it."

Old Man Fin watched them from his armchair across the room, a faint smile touching his lips. He had arranged this not out of extravagance, but out of care—ensuring that Audrey, who had endured so much, could finally feel comfort, security, and attention.

The night passed peacefully, filled with laughter, quiet conversation, and small acts of thoughtfulness. Audrey felt a gentle happiness she hadn't realized she was missing—the warmth of being truly cared for by two people who had her best interest at heart.

As she drifted to sleep that night, the soft glow of the mansion's lights bathing her room, she realized that these quiet, indulgent days were a rare gift. Nathan and his father had created a space where she could simply be herself, without worry or pretense. And for the first time in a long while, Audrey felt completely at home.
