Chapter 16 - The Predator’s Curiosity

The third morning of the Strategic Consensus Test began with a subtle but unmistakable shift.

Suspicion had matured.

Students were no longer merely exchanging theories.

They were defending them.

Rumors had evolved into positions.

Positions had evolved into arguments.

And arguments had begun dividing groups that had barely known each other two days ago.

Rei walked through the hallway toward her classroom with the same quiet composure she had maintained since the exam began.

Around her, conversations halted briefly when she passed.

The rumor network had expanded far enough that even students outside the original groups had begun hearing fragments.

Class B.

VIP.

False accusations.

No one yet understood where the distortion had started.

But everyone could feel its presence.

Rei entered the classroom.

The tension inside was heavier than before.

Horikita sat with several students near the front, discussing strategies in low voices.

Yamauchi looked exhausted.

The exam had clearly pushed him beyond his comfort.

Rei took her seat and opened her notebook.

One line appeared on a fresh page.

Stage two: belief reinforcement.

The system had entered its most fragile state.

Once students committed to a theory, they began defending it instinctively.

Even weak logic could become strong conviction.

Kei approached her desk again, as she had every morning.

"You know something weird?" Kei said quietly.

Rei looked up.

"Several students think they've figured out the exam already."

Rei closed her notebook.

"And what do they believe?"

"That the VIPs are mostly from Class B."

Rei nodded once.

Kei stared at her.

"That's your doing, isn't it?"

Rei did not answer immediately.

Kei leaned closer.

"You're spreading that idea everywhere."

Rei finally spoke.

"It is spreading itself."

Kei laughed softly.

"That's a very convenient explanation."

Rei tilted her head slightly.

"Convenience is irrelevant."

Kei watched her carefully.

"You're dangerous."

"Yes."

The answer came without hesitation.

For some reason, Kei smiled.

That afternoon, the mixed groups gathered once again.

Room C-3 felt noticeably more tense than the previous days.

Kenji Suda stood near the window with his arms crossed.

"You two hear the latest?" he asked as Rei entered.

Mio Takahashi nodded.

"Three groups have already submitted accusations."

Suda frowned.

"That's way too early."

"Yes," Mio said calmly.

"They are reacting to pressure."

Suda looked at Rei.

"You're still calm."

"Yes."

"You really think this chaos is useful."

"Yes."

Suda exhaled slowly.

"I'm starting to wonder if you planned this entire mess."

Rei took her seat.

"The exam planned it."

"That's not what I meant."

Before the conversation could continue, the door opened.

Another student stepped inside.

The room froze.

Because the student standing in the doorway did not belong to their group.

Tall.

Relaxed posture.

Sharp eyes.

A faint smile that did not quite reach them.

Kakeru Ryuen stepped into the room without waiting for permission.

Kenji Suda straightened immediately.

"Ryuen."

Ryuen glanced around the room slowly.

"Relax," he said lazily.

"I'm just visiting."

Mio frowned.

"This is a closed group meeting."

Ryuen shrugged.

"Sure."

His eyes settled on Rei.

"But I was curious about something."

Silence filled the room.

Suda crossed his arms.

"What do you want?"

Ryuen ignored him.

Instead, he walked slowly toward the table and stopped directly across from Rei.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Ryuen smiled.

"You're the interesting one from Class D, right?"

Rei looked at him calmly.

"That depends on your definition of interesting."

Ryuen laughed softly.

"Good answer."

He pulled a chair back and sat down without invitation.

"I've been hearing a lot of rumors lately."

Mio remained perfectly still.

Suda watched carefully.

Ryuen leaned forward slightly.

"Most of those rumors seem to involve Class B being the VIP in multiple groups."

He tapped the table lightly.

"Funny thing about rumors."

Rei said nothing.

"They usually start somewhere."

Ryuen's eyes sharpened.

"And I like finding out where."

Suda spoke before Rei could answer.

"Are you accusing someone?"

Ryuen waved a hand lazily.

"Not yet."

His attention returned to Rei.

"But something about this whole situation feels… guided."

Rei tilted her head slightly.

"Guided?"

"Yes."

"By whom?"

Ryuen smiled again.

"That's the question."

The room remained silent for several seconds.

Then Rei finally spoke.

"What conclusion have you reached so far?"

Ryuen's grin widened.

"That someone started pushing the Class B theory early."

"Possible."

"Then other students repeated it."

"Yes."

"Now half the school believes it."

"Yes."

Ryuen leaned back.

"And the person who started it is probably enjoying the chaos."

Rei considered that.

"Perhaps."

Ryuen studied her face carefully.

Waiting.

Watching for the smallest shift.

But Rei's expression remained steady.

No hesitation.

No tension.

Just calm.

After a moment, Ryuen laughed.

"You're good."

Suda frowned.

"At what?"

Ryuen stood up.

"At not reacting."

He turned toward the door.

"But that's fine."

He glanced back at Rei one last time.

"The exam still has time left."

Then he left the room.

The door closed behind him.

Silence remained.

Kenji Suda exhaled slowly.

"Well."

Mio spoke quietly.

"That was unexpected."

Suda looked at Rei.

"You didn't seem surprised."

"I was not."

"You knew he'd come?"

"No."

"Then why weren't you nervous?"

Rei answered calmly.

"Because his visit confirmed something."

Mio tilted her head slightly.

"What?"

"That the rumor network has reached the leadership level."

Suda blinked.

"You're saying that was the goal?"

"No."

Rei stood and closed her notebook.

"But it is a useful development."

Mio studied her carefully.

"You really are treating this like an experiment."

"Yes."

"And Ryuen?"

Rei walked toward the door.

"He is another variable."

At the far end of the corridor, Ryuen walked slowly through the hallway with a thoughtful expression.

One of his classmates approached.

"Well?" the student asked.

"Did you figure it out?"

Ryuen smirked.

"Not yet."

"But?"

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"But that girl from Class D is definitely involved."

The student frowned.

"You're sure?"

Ryuen chuckled quietly.

"She didn't deny anything."

"And she didn't confirm anything."

He slipped his hands into his pockets.

"That kind of silence is interesting."

Ryuen looked back down the hallway toward the closed meeting room.

The exam had just become far more entertaining.
