Chapter 15 - The Pressure of Suspicion

The second morning of the Strategic Consensus Test began with tension that no longer tried to hide itself.

Students walked through the halls with careful eyes.

Small conversations stopped when someone unfamiliar approached.

Trust had become a fragile currency.

And rumors were already circulating faster than facts.

Rei entered the classroom and took her usual seat near the window.

She did not open her notebook immediately.

Instead, she watched.

Three students in the corner were arguing quietly.

Another group leaned close together, whispering urgently.

Across the room, Yamauchi stared at the board without really reading it.

The class had begun reacting exactly as expected.

Once suspicion entered a system, it rarely left quietly.

Kei approached her desk a few moments later.

"You look relaxed again," Kei said.

Rei glanced up.

"Concern would not change the structure of the exam."

Kei leaned against the desk.

"Everyone else is panicking."

"Yes."

"You're not even pretending."

"No."

Kei studied her face for a moment.

"You already started doing something, didn't you?"

Rei tilted her head slightly.

"What makes you think that?"

Kei smiled faintly.

"Because rumors started spreading yesterday."

"And?"

"And every rumor seems to lead back to a group that talked to you."

Rei did not answer.

Kei laughed quietly.

"I knew it."

"You assume a pattern."

"I see one."

Rei finally spoke.

"Assumptions are useful."

Kei leaned closer.

"So what's the plan?"

Rei closed her notebook.

"The plan is already in motion."

Meanwhile, across the building, another conversation carried a very different tone.

Inside a classroom belonging to Class C, several students stood around a desk.

At the center sat a boy with sharp eyes and a slow, amused smile.

Kakeru Ryuen rested his chin in his palm.

"So the rumors spread overnight."

A student nodded.

"Yeah. Different groups are talking about possible VIPs."

Ryuen tapped the desk lightly.

"Interesting."

One of his classmates frowned.

"You don't look surprised."

"I'm not."

Another student crossed his arms.

"You think someone started it on purpose?"

Ryuen's grin widened slightly.

"Of course."

"Who?"

Ryuen stood slowly.

"That's what I'm going to find out."

Later that morning, the mixed groups met again.

Room C-3 felt smaller today.

Kenji Suda arrived first, dropping into a chair with a tired sigh.

"You two notice the chaos in the hallways?" he asked.

Mio Takahashi nodded.

"Several groups have begun accusing people already."

"That's insane," Suda muttered.

Rei entered quietly and closed the door behind her.

"Not insane," she said.

"Predictable."

Suda looked at her.

"People are guessing already."

"Yes."

"That's reckless."

"Yes."

Suda leaned forward.

"You expected this."

"Yes."

Mio folded her hands on the table.

"The rumors are accelerating."

"Yes."

Suda blinked.

"You keep saying yes like this whole thing was planned."

Rei looked at him calmly.

"Human decision patterns are highly consistent under uncertainty."

Suda stared at her.

"Translation?"

"They make mistakes."

Mio leaned back slightly.

"Some groups believe the VIP is from Class B."

Suda frowned.

"Where did that rumor start?"

Mio glanced at Rei briefly.

"It spread quickly yesterday."

Suda turned toward Rei slowly.

"You wouldn't happen to know anything about that, would you?"

Rei answered calmly.

"Yes."

Both students stared at her.

Suda laughed.

"You're not even hiding it."

"No."

"You started the rumor?"

"I accelerated an existing suspicion."

Mio's eyes narrowed slightly.

"You confirmed someone's theory."

"Yes."

"And now other groups are repeating it."

"Yes."

Suda ran a hand through his hair.

"That's… actually kind of terrifying."

Rei remained silent.

Because the real distortion had only just begun.

By lunchtime, the rumor had already evolved.

Students were no longer saying "someone from Class B might be the VIP."

They were saying "the VIP is probably from Class B."

A small shift in language.

But a massive shift in belief.

Rei sat quietly in the cafeteria, watching the change unfold.

Kenji Suda joined her table a few minutes later.

"You started a chain reaction," he said.

"Yes."

"You realize this might blow back on us."

"Yes."

"Then why risk it?"

Rei looked across the crowded room.

"Because people rarely question information that confirms their expectations."

Suda frowned.

"You're saying everyone already suspected Class B."

"Yes."

"So you pushed that suspicion."

"Yes."

Suda leaned back slowly.

"That's clever."

He paused.

"Or dangerous."

"Both."

Across the cafeteria, another conversation was taking place.

Several students from Class C gathered around a table.

Ryuen stood nearby, watching the room carefully.

His eyes moved from group to group.

Patterns.

Conversations.

Shifts in posture.

He noticed something interesting.

Students discussing the rumor often glanced toward one particular table.

The table where Rei was sitting.

Ryuen's grin returned.

"So that's the center of it," he murmured.

A student beside him looked confused.

"What is?"

Ryuen pointed casually toward Rei.

"That girl."

The student frowned.

"Class D?"

"Yes."

"You think she started the rumors?"

Ryuen shrugged.

"Maybe."

His eyes remained fixed on her.

"But I want to see how she reacts when someone pushes back."

That afternoon, as the mixed groups reconvened again, the atmosphere had grown noticeably heavier.

Kenji Suda closed the door behind them.

"You two hear the latest version of the rumor?"

Mio nodded.

"Now they think the VIP is specifically from Class B in several groups."

Suda shook his head.

"That escalated fast."

Rei remained calm.

"That was inevitable."

Suda looked at her.

"You're still controlling it, aren't you?"

"No."

"Then what are you doing?"

Rei answered quietly.

"Watching who believes it."

Mio tilted her head slightly.

"That tells you something."

"Yes."

"What?"

Rei looked at both of them.

"Who is easiest to manipulate."

The room fell silent.

Because that answer was colder than either of them expected.

As the meeting ended, Suda lingered near the door.

"You know something?" he said.

Rei looked at him.

"If someone figures out you started this… things could get ugly."

"That is possible."

"You're not worried?"

"No."

Suda smiled faintly.

"You're either fearless or insane."

Rei considered that.

Then answered calmly.

"Neither."

She stepped into the hallway.

"I am curious."

From the opposite end of the corridor, another student had been watching.

Ryuen leaned against the wall with his arms crossed.

His eyes followed Rei as she walked away.

Interesting.

Most students hid their strategies.

They avoided attention.

But that girl from Class D moved through the exam like someone testing boundaries.

Ryuen's grin widened slowly.

He had just found the most entertaining opponent in the school.
