Chapter 89 - Frozen Heart

Solaris kept his eyes on the ground beside Selen, his arms rubbing each other due to the cold.

Selen stared at Solaris, her face slowly turning into a look of confusion.

Why isn't he looking at me?

Selen began to tilt her head in confusion as well.

"Solaris, look at me."

She demanded.

His eyes didn't move; his body shivered slightly.

Why is he cold? He's practically a human furnace.

Selen spoke once more.

"Look at me, Solaris."

His eyes moved farther from hers.

Selen sighed slightly as she stood up from the chair she was sitting on.

Then she turned around, bent over, and placed a baseball-sized ball of ice on the ground, and the tile underneath bent and cracked.

Oops, did I really put that much into it?

Selen looked at the door and then moved her foot over next to the ball of ice; slowly, a cradle of ice formed under the ball and lifted it up.

Selen then turned around and walked over to where Solaris was sitting.

Now standing close to him, she leaned in, bringing her face to the side of his cheek.

"Look at me, Solaris."

An adamant tone filled her voice.

He continued to look over, now looking at the wall.

Selen stood up and moved her long blonde hair back over her shoulder.

Selen pouted slightly, then she moved her body into his line of sight and leaned over again.

Their eyes met for a moment before he turned his head the other way.

However, in that moment, she saw something that tore into her currently unfrozen heart.

Tha.. That look...

Selen bit her lip for a moment, considering what to do; she wanted to help him, she really did.

But she was probably the worst person to do that.

I mean, why did Freak and that scaredy-cat send me here of all people? I mean, me and Solaris aren't even that close, right? I'm not his best friend, and hell, I don't even know if he likes me at all. He acts really odd around me. At first, I thought he liked me, but no, that's not it.

Who could? I'm the messiest person ever.

I quite literally lack emotions most of the time, not to mention I'm kind of mean without them.

I seem to be ugly in most people's eyes besides Ania, but she'd bang anyone with a pulse.

But... That doesn't matter right now; I'm not the main issue here. I'm here to attempt to help him... my... friend, no... coworker maybe... I wish that... no, Selen, not right now; bigger fish to fry.

Selen reeled herself back in and moved herself once again into his line of sight.

"Why won't you look at me, Solaris? All I want to do is help."

Selen subconsciously muttered the last part under her breath, but with Solaris so close, he still heard it.

Solaris made a prolonged blink, then he opened his eyes and looked up at Selen's own eyes.

Selen smiled slightly as her eyes softened into a look of concern.

"What's wrong, Solaris? Tell me, please. I know we're not especially close and rarely talk outside of that one time earlier, but please, I want to help."

Solaris took a deep breath, his body shaking slightly.

No longer from being cold, but instead from something else.

His eyes left her gaze and returned to the floor.

"Solaris... please."

Selen moved her arms slowly, and they shook slightly as she did, but slowly she moved them around Solaris's neck and into a very awkward embrace.

"Please don't touch me, Solaris."

Solaris had expected her touch to be frigid and cold, like ice, but it wasn't; it was warm and normal, like any other human.

Solaris gritted his teeth, then spat.

"Move your arms off me. I'm nothing but a lowlife murderer; I don't deserve anything good, much less the embrace of an angel."

Selen frowned slightly, then she wrapped her hands around him tighter and a bit less awkwardly.

Selen felt her heart pounding, fear taking over as she touched another human, something she rarely did, and if she did, she had no emotions.

Solaris felt her warm embrace grow stronger and a slight tremble in her arms and fingers.

"Please, Solaris, tell me."

Selen's fear was only overridden by the odd feeling of trust and the need to help Solaris in this moment, just as he did for her.

Solaris gritted his teeth while he frowned in pain.

Selen let out a deep breath, then she spoke softly.

"Please, Solaris, I will ask once more. Let me help you, just as you have helped me."

Solaris felt his heartbeat grow faster.

I helped her? How could I, the useless murderer Solaris, help anyone? I'm nothing but garbage

Solaris moved his vision back to Selen, her face quivering slightly as a tear rolled down her cheek.

"Please, Solaris."

Solaris swallowed hard, then he opened his mouth.

"I'm nothing but a murderer; how could I do anything to help you?"

Selen's quivering lip moved up slightly into a smile as she spoke.

"You don't remember? The first day we met was outclassed by that creature and at death's door; had it not been for you, I would've died. Then later, when Ember lost his mind, you saved me again. Even though it was the entity that beat Ember, it was still you who made the play to let them take over and help me. Then when you and Ember disappeared to Hell, if it hadn't been for your strange armor-like coating, I would've never considered making armor out of ice, and I would've been dead tenfold by the demons I had to face, and finally earlier... I... I might have done something I would've regretted had you not come to talk to me."

Selen gritted her teeth, then she finally swallowed her pride and spoke.

"You saved me, Solaris, more times than you know!"

Solaris felt something he thought was almost gone light a spark in his heart.

Those words meant more than the entire world to Solaris.

A tear rolled down his cheek, and Selen began to cry, collapsing to the floor.

"I... I... I Saved you..."
