Chapter 12 - "Legacy of fear"

'The Shadow House'

Chapter 12 – Legacy of FearThe road out of Devgarh stretched endlessly before them, lined by skeletal trees and abandoned homes. The town seemed frozen in time, the events of the past months leaving its mark like a wound that would never fully heal. Arjun's hands ached from clutching the key, now cold and inert, but he knew it was still dangerous.

"Do you think anyone else survived?" Maya asked quietly, her voice barely carrying over the wind.

Arjun shook his head. "Not many. Most were too afraid to fight… or the house claimed them first."

As they walked, a distant figure appeared near the edge of the road—a woman, ragged, eyes wide, staring at them. She didn't move. Her lips whispered something, but the wind carried it away before Arjun could hear.

"Did you see that?" Maya whispered, gripping his arm.

Arjun nodded. "We need to be careful. If any part of the house is still alive… it can reach people beyond the hill."

They reached the first town outside the shadow of Devgarh. Signs of normal life greeted them—shops open, lights on—but the atmosphere was different. People avoided eye contact. Whispers followed them wherever they went. Some glances were fearful; others… wary, almost knowing.

At a small inn, they spoke with the innkeeper, an elderly man with gray hair and tired eyes.

"Devgarh?" he asked, voice low. "Stay away from that hill. Nothing comes back the same from there. Nothing alive, anyway. Some leave… but the shadows follow."

Arjun exchanged a glance with Maya. "Follow?"

The innkeeper shook his head. "They say the house doesn't just trap souls. It leaves pieces behind. Fear, whispers… shadows. They can infect minds, make people see things, remember things they shouldn't. Even if the house is destroyed."

Maya shivered. "We thought we destroyed it."

"Destroyed?" the innkeeper said sharply. "Maybe you stopped it for a night. Maybe you even weakened it. But the hill remembers. The house leaves a legacy."

Arjun's stomach sank. Even if they survived, even if the house was gone, its influence had spread.

That night, in the safety of their room at the inn, Arjun laid out the journal, the key, and all their notes. The shadows of the past weeks pressed in their minds.

"I think we need to trace its origins," Arjun said. "The founder… Raghunath Dev. He created it. If we can find the source of the ritual, maybe we can finally sever the connection."

Maya nodded. "You mean… go back to the cemetery?"

"Yes," Arjun said. "We need to do more than survive. We need to finish it. Or it will keep spreading, leaving shadows behind for others to fall into."

A faint noise interrupted them. A whisper at the window. Soft. Familiar.

"You cannot escape… we wait…"

They froze. The key in Arjun's hand vibrated faintly.

"Not again," Maya said, panic rising.

Arjun gritted his teeth. "We'll face it. We have to. Whatever is left of the house, whatever fragments of shadows survived, we end it—tonight or never."

Outside, the wind howled. Somewhere in the distance, the faint silhouette of the Shadow House appeared, even though they had left it miles behind. Its windows glimmered faintly, as if watching.

And in that moment, both Arjun and Maya realized: the Shadow House had never been about the building itself. It was about fear, and fear never truly dies.

The shadows of Devgarh were patient. And they were coming.
