Chapter 23 - Ripples in the City

The sun dipped lower over Ujjaini, painting the sky with deep shades of orange and crimson. As evening approached, the streets of the city began shifting into a different rhythm.

Market stalls that had been loud and crowded all day were slowly closing.

Merchants packed away their goods while lanterns were lit along the stone roads. The scent of cooked food filled the air as taverns and food stalls prepared for the nighttime crowd.

Yet beneath the surface of the city's normal activity, a quiet tension had begun spreading.

Rakshak patrols were everywhere now.

Groups of armored warriors moved through the streets with quiet determination, stopping travelers, asking questions, and observing faces carefully.

Arivaan noticed the change immediately.

He and Devika walked through a narrow street lined with lanterns, both wearing their cloaks once again.

"This is getting interesting," Arivaan murmured.

Devika didn't look amused.

"It means the investigation has escalated."

Arivaan glanced sideways at her.

"How can you tell?"

Devika pointed subtly toward the end of the street.

A group of four Rakshak warriors stood there speaking with a merchant.

Their armor looked different from the earlier patrols.

Darker.

More polished.

And each of them carried a weapon etched with glowing runes.

"Those are not ordinary patrol guards," Devika said quietly.

"Investigation unit."

Arivaan's smile widened slightly.

"So the Rakshak Sabha is getting serious."

Devika looked at him carefully.

"You don't understand what that means."

"Explain."

Devika lowered her voice.

"When the Rakshak Sabha deploys investigation units inside a city…"

"…it means they believe a dangerous criminal is hiding nearby."

Arivaan chuckled softly.

"Well, they're not wrong."

Devika's expression hardened.

"You shouldn't joke about this."

Arivaan shrugged.

"I'm not joking."

He leaned casually against a wall and observed the patrol from a distance.

The Rakshak warriors spoke with the merchant for several minutes before continuing down the street.

Their movements were organized.

Disciplined.

Careful.

Arivaan noticed something else too.

"They're not just searching randomly."

Devika nodded.

"They're tracking patterns."

Arivaan rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

"That means they're narrowing the search area."

Devika looked at him sharply.

"Yes."

"And if they continue…"

"…they'll eventually reach this district."

Arivaan pushed himself off the wall and began walking again.

Devika followed automatically.

"Then we should move."

Devika frowned.

"Where?"

"Somewhere less obvious."

They turned down another street that led toward the older part of the city.

This district was quieter.

Most buildings here were small stone houses with wooden balconies.

Lanterns hung from doorways while narrow alleyways connected the streets like a maze.

Arivaan slowed his pace.

"This area is better."

Devika looked around.

"Why?"

"Too many small streets."

He gestured toward the twisting alleys around them.

"Patrols will have trouble covering everything."

Devika crossed her arms.

"You're thinking like a criminal."

Arivaan laughed.

"I've been a criminal for years."

Devika remained silent.

After several minutes of walking, they reached a small plaza with an old stone well in the center.

The area was quiet.

Only a few people passed through occasionally.

Arivaan sat down on the edge of the well.

Devika stood nearby, still watching the surrounding streets carefully.

"Tell me something," Arivaan said.

"What?"

"You mentioned earlier that stronger Rakshaks might arrive."

Devika nodded.

"Yes."

"Who?"

Devika hesitated.

Then she answered.

"Hunters."

Arivaan's eyes brightened slightly.

"Specialists?"

"Yes."

"They track dangerous targets."

Arivaan leaned forward.

"That sounds useful."

Devika frowned.

"You're not thinking clearly."

"Why not?"

Devika's voice grew serious.

"Because if a hunter finds you…"

"…you won't survive."

Arivaan smiled calmly.

"That depends."

"On what?"

"On how predictable they are."

Devika shook her head.

"You're underestimating them."

Arivaan glanced at the floating panel again.

Target: Devika AgnivarnaAssimilation: 65%

The number had increased once more.

The bond between them continued strengthening.

Arivaan tapped the side of his head thoughtfully.

"You said hunters specialize in tracking dangerous criminals."

"Yes."

"And they analyze patterns."

"Yes."

Arivaan's smile returned.

"Then eventually they'll analyze something interesting."

Devika frowned.

"What?"

Arivaan pointed at her.

"The fact that you disappeared."

Devika's expression tightened.

"Yes."

"That's why they'll search harder."

Arivaan nodded.

"Exactly."

He stood up and stretched his arms.

"Which means sooner or later…"

"…one of these hunters will start looking for you specifically."

Devika stared at him.

"You're planning to confront them."

Arivaan didn't deny it.

"Eventually."

Devika shook her head.

"That's madness."

Arivaan chuckled quietly.

"Maybe."

He glanced again at the glowing panel.

Assimilation: 66%

The power inside him continued evolving.

And with every passing hour, his control over Devika grew stronger.

Arivaan looked toward the distant rooftops of the city.

"Let them search."

Devika watched him carefully.

"You're not afraid."

Arivaan smiled.

"No."

Devika asked quietly,

"Why?"

Arivaan's voice remained calm.

"Because the moment they finally find me…"

"…I'll already be stronger than when they started the hunt."

Devika said nothing.

But deep down, she began realizing something troubling.

Arivaan wasn't just hiding anymore.

He was preparing.

And if he continued growing stronger at this pace—

The Rakshak Sabha might soon face a threat far more dangerous than the villains they had fought before.

Because Arivaan wasn't just surviving.

He was learning.

And every lesson was bringing him closer to becoming something far worse than a simple villain.
