Later that afternoon, the board of directors called another meeting.
This time the atmosphere was colder.
More serious.
Emily stood quietly beside the conference table.
One director spoke bluntly.
"Mr. Knight, the company's reputation is being damaged."
Another added,
"We believe Miss Carter should be temporarily suspended."
Emily's heart dropped.
"Suspended?"
The director nodded.
"Until the situation is resolved."
Emily felt anger rising.
"I didn't do anything wrong."
The director looked at her coldly.
"That may be true."
"But perception matters."
Emily turned toward Alexander.
For a moment she wondered if he would agree.
But Alexander slowly stood up.
His voice was calm.
"No."
The directors frowned.
"Mr. Knight—"
Alexander interrupted.
"Miss Carter will not be suspended."
The room fell silent.
One director spoke again.
"You're risking the company's reputation."
Alexander looked directly at him.
"My decision stands."
Emily stared at him in shock.
Alexander had just chosen her side against the entire board.
