Chapter 26 - The Morning After the Choice

The air in the mansion didn't just feel empty.

It felt pressurized.

With the "happy couples" gone, the house had lost its noise—its distractions. What remained was silence.

Not peaceful silence.

The kind that made every movement feel louder than it should be.

The kitchen was bright.

Too bright.

Glass cabinets, marble counters, steel finishes—everything reflected light.

And yet, it felt cold.

Merlin stood at the kitchen counter where the espresso machine was placed.

A cup sat beneath the spout.

Dark liquid dripped slowly.

Thud.

Thud.

Thud.

She didn't move.

Footsteps echoed from behind.

Not light.

Not casual.

Deliberate.

Leon.

He walked past the dining area and into the kitchen without hesitation.

Not toward the coffee.

Not toward her.

He stopped near the floor-to-ceiling window at the far end of the kitchen, leaning one shoulder lightly against the frame.

From there, he had a clear view of her.

He didn't greet her.

Didn't look away.

Just stayed there.

"You're going to let that overflow."

Jisoo's voice came from the kitchen entrance.

Warm.

Steady.

Grounded.

He walked in, stopping beside Merlin at the counter.

Close enough to reach the machine.

His hand moved past hers, pressing the button to stop the flow.

For a brief second, his arm brushed against hers.

"Thanks," Merlin said quietly.

Jisoo leaned lightly against the counter beside her, facing slightly toward her.

"Did you sleep?"

"Barely."

He nodded once.

"That makes sense."

His gaze lingered—not heavy, not intrusive.

Just attentive.

"You've been thinking too much."

Merlin let out a small breath.

"Is it that obvious?"

"Only if you're trying to hide it."

She looked down at the cup in her hands.

"Everything just feels… unclear."

Jisoo took a moment before answering.

"It's only unclear if someone is avoiding the answer."

She looked up.

He met her eyes directly.

"I know what I chose."

Simple.

Clear.

"I'm not confused," he added.

A pause.

"Are you?"

The question settled between them.

"Confidence is convenient."

Leon's voice came from the window.

Both of them turned slightly.

Leon pushed himself off the frame and walked toward the counter.

Slow.

Measured.

He stopped on the opposite side of the counter from Merlin and Jisoo.

Close enough to speak without raising his voice.

Far enough to keep distance.

"You can act certain," he said, looking at Merlin.

"But the result didn't change."

No one interrupted.

"The screen stayed red."

Merlin's fingers tightened slightly around the cup.

"You can choose what feels safe," Leon continued,

"but that doesn't make it real."

He shifted slightly closer to the counter,

resting one hand against the marble surface.

"You know exactly what I did in that booth."

Her breath paused—just for a second.

"And you know why you're avoiding it."

The air felt heavier now.

Leon's gaze didn't move.

"You're not confused," he said quietly.

"You're hesitating."

A beat.

"Because I'm not something you can control."

Merlin looked up at him.

For a moment—

Nothing moved.

Then Leon straightened.

And stepped away from the counter.

He turned—

And walked out of the kitchen.

The silence he left behind felt sharper.

"Well."

Kiara's voice entered before she did.

She walked into the kitchen slowly, her heels soft against the floor.

Her eyes went straight to Jisoo.

Not Merlin.

Not the tension.

Just him.

She stepped into his space, stopping close enough that her hand could rest lightly on his arm.

"Well, that was interesting," she said.

Jisoo didn't move.

"Since everyone else managed to leave,"

Kiara continued,

"I suppose we should make better use of what's left."

Her fingers remained where they were.

Confident.

Unapologetic.

"I thought we understood each other," she added.

Jisoo glanced at her hand briefly.

Then back at her.

"Maybe that was your assumption."

Kiara smiled.

Slightly.

Sharply.

"Or maybe," she said, leaning in just a little,

"you're focusing on something that isn't going anywhere."

A pause.

"I prefer certainty."

Jisoo didn't answer.

But he didn't move away either.

BING.

The screen in the dining area lit up.

All four turned.

The Host appeared.

"Good morning."

Silence.

"I hope the night was… informative."

The screen shifted.

ANNOUNCEMENT: THE UNMATCHED CONSEQUENCE

"To the remaining contestants—"

"Your inability to form mutual selections indicates unresolved intent."

A pause.

"In this house, hesitation creates stagnation."

The screen changed again.

"Therefore—your autonomy is temporarily revoked."

The room stilled.

"You will participate in Assigned Dates."

Merlin's chest tightened.

"The House has selected partners based on unresolved tension."

The names appeared.

JISOO — KIARA

LEON — MERLIN

Silence.

Kiara smiled slowly.

Jisoo exhaled once.

Merlin didn't move.

Leon wasn't in the room anymore.

But his presence still lingered.

Merlin looked down at her cup.

The coffee had gone cold.

There were no distractions now.

No one to hide behind.

Just choices.

And consequences.

She glanced toward Jisoo.

Steady.

Grounded.

Then toward the doorway.

Leon was gone.

But not far.

Merlin inhaled slowly.

This wasn't about comfort anymore.

It was about facing what she had avoided.

And now—

There was no way around it.

Because this time—

She wouldn't have a choice.

And Leon—

Would finally have her alone.
