It was well into the evening when Lila Caldwell finally returned home.
The moment she stepped through the front door, there was no mistaking her mood.
She was smiling so broadly that the expression seemed almost incapable of leaving her face, and she walked into the sitting room with an air of triumph that immediately drew her Mum's attention away from the television.
Matilda Caldwell was seated beside her husband, watching the evening news. Anthony sat in his usual chair, his attention divided between the television and the newspaper resting across his lap.
Neither of them had any idea what their daughter was about to announce.
"Good evening, Mum. Dad."
Matilda looked over her shoulder. "You're home late."
Lila barely seemed to hear the observation. She lifted her hand, and a large pink diamond caught the chandelier light and flashed brilliantly on the middle finger of her left hand.
"I have something to tell you."
