"I am not complaining," Anthony said.
Matilda refused to believe it. "You are questioning it," she said.
"Because an engagement is serious," he said in defence.
"So is marriage."
"I know."
Matilda smiled faintly. "Then perhaps you should be happy that she believes she has found the person she wants to marry."
Anthony released a long breath. "Regardless, I want to meet the Lions properly before anything else happens."
"That is reasonable."
"Once we have met them and I am satisfied with the family, the wedding preparations can begin."
He paused, then added, "I simply do not want anyone putting a ring on my daughter's finger and then failing to do what is expected of a husband."
Matilda nodded. "I understand."
A few seconds of silence descended in the room, then Matilda's expression changed. She looked toward the staircase.
"If only Amara had been given the same opportunity."
Instantly, Anthony's face tightened.
