Chapter 29 - Locked Rooms and Glances

The night air outside the gala was cool and refreshing.

After the warmth and noise of the ballroom, the quiet street felt almost peaceful.

A sleek black car waited near the entrance.

The driver opened the door as Adrian and Elena approached.

Elena paused before getting in.

"You really like dramatic exits, don't you?"

Adrian glanced at her.

"I prefer quiet ones."

"This didn't feel quiet."

"That's because Seraphina was there."

Elena gave a small nod.

Fair point.

She stepped into the car, and Adrian followed, the door closing softly behind them.

For a few minutes, neither of them spoke.

The city lights passed by outside the window as the car moved smoothly through the streets.

Elena rested her elbow lightly against the door, watching the buildings blur past.

"So," she said eventually, "does every dinner invitation come with an unexpected reunion and a mysterious heiress?"

Adrian's voice was calm.

"No."

"Good."

She glanced at him.

"Because that was slightly overwhelming."

"I noticed."

"You did?"

"You were playing with the edge of your sleeve."

Elena blinked.

"You noticed that?"

"Yes."

She let out a quiet laugh.

"Still observing everything, I see."

Adrian didn't deny it.

The car slowed a few minutes later and turned into a quieter street.

Moments later, it stopped in front of a softly lit building.

Elena looked outside.

"This doesn't look like a restaurant."

"It's private."

"That sounds suspicious."

"It's quieter."

Adrian stepped out of the car and offered her his hand.

Elena hesitated for a moment before taking it.

The building was elegant but understated.

Inside, the lobby was calm and almost empty.

A host greeted Adrian immediately.

"Good evening, Mr. Volkov."

Adrian nodded.

"The room?"

"Ready."

Elena raised an eyebrow as they followed the host down a hallway.

"Room?"

"It's a private dining room."

"That seems unnecessary."

Adrian stopped in front of a door.

"Not tonight."

The host opened it and stepped aside.

Inside was a small, beautifully designed dining room with a single table near a tall window overlooking the city lights.

Soft candlelight filled the space.

Elena stepped inside slowly.

"This is… nice."

The host gave them a polite nod before closing the door behind them.

Click.

The quiet sound of the lock turning echoed faintly in the room.

Elena turned around.

"Did that just lock?"

Adrian walked toward the table calmly.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"For privacy."

Elena crossed her arms.

"That sounds slightly alarming."

Adrian looked at her.

"You're safe here."

She studied his expression.

There was no teasing in it.

Just quiet certainty.

Elena relaxed slightly and moved toward the window.

The view of the city below was beautiful.

"You really planned this dinner."

"Yes."

"That's surprising."

"Why?"

"Because you used to avoid people."

"I still do."

She glanced at him.

"Then why invite me?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he poured two glasses of water and placed one in front of her.

Elena sat down across from him.

"You're doing that thing again."

"What thing?"

"The thinking silence."

Adrian leaned back slightly in his chair.

"You asked why I invited you."

"Yes."

He looked directly at her.

"Because I've spent years wondering what would happen if I did."

The honesty of the answer caught her off guard.

For a moment, Elena forgot what she was going to say next.

Instead, she picked up her glass.

"You spent years thinking about dinner?"

"About you."

The words were simple.

But the way he said them made her heart skip slightly.

Elena quickly looked down at the table.

"Well," she said lightly, trying to recover, "that's a lot of pressure for one evening."

Adrian's gaze didn't leave her.

"I'm not expecting anything."

"Good."

"But I am curious."

She looked up again.

"About what?"

Adrian's voice was quiet.

"About whether the girl who played the piano in an empty music hall is still the same person."

Elena held his gaze.

"And?"

"I'm still deciding."

She smiled faintly.

"Well then."

She leaned back in her chair.

"I suppose we'll have to talk a little longer."

Adrian nodded once.

Outside the window, the city lights shimmered quietly.

Inside the locked room, two people who had spent years apart were finally beginning to understand each other again.

And neither of them seemed ready for the conversation to end.
