Chapter 35 - Shadows in the Crowd

By the time evening arrived, the city had returned to its usual rhythm.

Traffic lights blinked across crowded streets, cafés filled with quiet conversations, and somewhere in the distance a street musician played a soft melody that drifted through the cool air.

Elena sat near the window of a small café not far from the music conservatory.

Her untouched tea had long gone cold.

She had come here hoping a change of scenery might calm her thoughts.

It hadn't worked.

The phone call from that morning still echoed in her mind.

Mr. Volkov has many enemies.

Sometimes those enemies prefer easier targets.

She sighed quietly and rubbed her temple.

"You're being paranoid," she muttered to herself.

People passed by outside the café window.

Students.

Office workers.

Tourists.

Normal life.

Still, something about the day had left her feeling slightly unsettled.

Her phone buzzed again on the table.

Elena glanced down.

This time, it was a familiar name.

Adrian.

She stared at the screen for a second before answering.

"Hello?"

"Where are you?"

His voice was calm, but there was a directness in the question that made her blink.

"Good evening to you too," she said.

"Where are you?" he repeated.

Elena leaned back slightly in her chair.

"A café near the conservatory."

"Alone?"

She raised an eyebrow.

"Yes."

There was a brief pause on the line.

Then Adrian said quietly,

"Stay where you are."

Elena frowned.

"That sounded less like a suggestion and more like an order."

"I'll be there in ten minutes."

"Adrian—"

But the line had already gone dead.

She stared at her phone.

"Unbelievable."

Across the café, a man sitting near the counter briefly glanced up from his newspaper.

His eyes lingered on Elena for a second longer than necessary.

Then he lowered his gaze again.

Elena didn't notice.

Outside, the evening crowd moved steadily along the sidewalk.

A woman carrying shopping bags passed the window.

Two teenagers laughed as they walked by.

And near the corner of the street, a dark car had been parked for almost twenty minutes.

Inside it, someone watched the café entrance carefully.

Back inside, Elena tapped her fingers lightly on the table.

She hated being told to stay put like she was part of some security operation.

Still…

Something in Adrian's voice had sounded unusually serious.

Five minutes passed.

Then eight.

Elena reached for her tea again but stopped halfway when she noticed something strange.

The same man who had been reading the newspaper earlier was now standing near the café door.

Not leaving.

Just standing.

Watching the street.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

That's odd.

He glanced back toward the room briefly.

Their eyes almost met.

Elena quickly looked down at her phone.

A strange feeling crept up her spine.

Maybe Adrian's paranoia was contagious.

She told herself not to overthink it.

Then the café door opened.

Elena looked up instinctively.

Adrian stepped inside.

Even in a simple dark coat, he stood out immediately.

The quiet authority in the way he moved made people unconsciously shift aside as he crossed the room.

His eyes found Elena instantly.

But they didn't stay there long.

Instead, they moved slowly around the café.

Observing.

Calculating.

The man near the door noticed him too.

For a brief moment, the two men exchanged a silent glance.

Then the man left the café quickly.

Adrian watched him go.

Elena stood from her seat.

"You look like you just walked into a crime scene," she said lightly.

Adrian approached the table.

"Did anyone talk to you?"

"No."

"Did anyone approach you?"

"No."

He nodded slightly.

Satisfied.

Elena crossed her arms.

"Do you want to explain why you rushed across the city like that?"

Adrian pulled out the chair across from her and sat down.

"You received a call this morning."

Elena froze.

"…How do you know that?"

"Marcus told me."

"You're monitoring my phone calls now?"

"Not directly."

"That's comforting."

Adrian's expression didn't change.

"What did the caller say?"

Elena studied him carefully.

"You already know part of it, apparently."

"Tell me the rest."

She hesitated.

Then repeated the conversation.

The warning.

The mention of his enemies.

The suggestion that she should stay away from him.

Adrian listened without interrupting.

When she finished, the silence between them felt heavier.

Elena leaned forward slightly.

"Well?"

Adrian looked toward the café window.

Outside, the streetlights flickered one by one.

"Then it's started."

Elena frowned.

"What has?"

Adrian's gaze returned to her.

"People watching."

A small chill ran through her.

"You mean like the man who just left?"

Adrian didn't look surprised.

"You noticed him."

"I'm not blind."

He nodded slightly.

"Good."

Elena leaned back in her chair.

"You're taking this very calmly."

"I expected it."

"That's not reassuring."

Adrian rested his hands on the table.

"Elena."

"Yes?"

"You're going to start seeing things like that more often."

Her eyebrows lifted.

"That sounds exhausting."

"It can be."

She studied him for a moment.

Then asked quietly,

"Is this what your life is like all the time?"

Adrian held her gaze.

"Yes."

Elena looked out the window at the crowd moving along the sidewalk.

Among them, anyone could be watching.

Anyone could be listening.

Anyone could be a shadow in the crowd.

When she turned back to Adrian, her voice was softer.

"You weren't exaggerating last night."

"No."

She sighed quietly.

"Well…"

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

"I guess dinner with you really does come with unexpected complications."

For the first time since entering the café…

Adrian almost smiled too.
