The message stayed on Elena's phone long after the call ended.
She stared at the photograph again.
The conservatory steps.
Students walking past.
And herself in the center of it.
Watched.
Observed.
Tracked.
Her chest felt tight.
Across the piano, her professor studied her carefully.
"Elena?"
She blinked.
"Yes… sorry."
"You look pale."
She quickly locked her phone screen.
"It's nothing."
But it wasn't nothing.
And she felt Adrian's security… suddenly didn't feel excessive.
It felt necessary.
"I think I need some air," she said.
He nodded.
"Take ten minutes."
Elena stepped out into the hallway and immediately pulled out her phone.
Her thumb hovered over Adrian's name.
For a moment, she hesitated.
Then she called.
The line connected after one ring.
"Elena."
His voice was calm as always.
But she could hear something else beneath it.
Attention.
"I received another call."
Silence.
Then Adrian spoke.
"What did they say?"
"They sent me a photo."
A longer silence this time.
"Send it to me."
She forwarded the message.
The response came almost instantly.
"Where are you right now?"
"In the conservatory."
"Stay inside."
Elena sighed softly.
"That sentence is becoming a pattern."
"Stay inside," he repeated.
She rubbed her temple.
"Adrian… I think you should come here."
A pause.
"I'm already on my way."
The call ended.
⸻
Forty minutes later, a convoy of black vehicles stopped in front of the conservatory.
Students near the entrance immediately slowed down.
Elena stood near the window upstairs and watched the scene unfold.
Three cars.
Then another.
Men stepped out first.
Security.
And then Adrian.
He moved through the entrance with quiet authority, his presence immediately commanding attention.
Even from the second floor, Elena could feel the shift in the atmosphere.
Students whispered.
Some stepped aside instinctively.
Adrian didn't slow down.
Lucas and Marcus followed behind him, scanning the building.
"Second floor," he muttered.
Adrian already knew.
They reached Elena's practice room moments later.
The door opened.
Elena stood beside the piano.
"You didn't have to bring half the city with you," she said.
Adrian walked straight toward her.
"Show me the photo."
She handed him the phone.
His eyes scanned the image once.
His jaw tightened slightly.
Lucas leaned over his shoulder.
"Well," he said quietly.
"That's not subtle."
Elena folded her arms.
"They called again."
Adrian looked up immediately.
"What did they say?"
"That your protection creates patterns."
Lucas frowned.
"That's… actually not wrong."
Adrian ignored the comment.
Instead, he walked toward the window and looked down at the street.
His security team had already spread out across the area.
Cars repositioned.
Observers scanning rooftops.
Movement everywhere.
Elena watched him carefully.
"You really control all of this, don't you?"
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he turned toward Lucas.
"Clear the hallway."
He nodded and stepped outside, closing the door behind him.
Now the room was quiet again.
Just Adrian.
And Elena.
She gestured toward the street below.
"The cars. The security. The people listening to your orders."
Her voice softened slightly.
"This is bigger than I thought."
Adrian studied her expression.
"You're seeing a small part of it."
Elena walked slowly toward the window.
"How small?"
Adrian spoke calmly.
"Volkov Group operates in forty-two countries."
She blinked.
"What?"
"Shipping. Energy. Private security. Infrastructure."
Elena turned toward him.
"That's not a company."
"No."
"That's…"
He finished the sentence for her.
"An empire."
The word hung in the air.
Elena stared at him.
"And you run all of it?"
"Yes."
She laughed softly in disbelief.
"You used to sit in the back row of music theory class."
"I remember."
"You barely spoke to anyone."
"I remember that too."
"And now you're telling me you control an international empire?"
Adrian's gaze remained steady.
"Yes."
Elena leaned back against the piano.
"Well," she said slowly.
"That explains the army outside."
Adrian stepped closer.
"This is why I told you my world isn't simple."
She met his eyes.
"You didn't say it was this complicated."
"You didn't ask."
Elena studied him for a moment.
Then she said quietly,
"Your empire has enemies."
"Yes."
"And those enemies are watching me."
"Yes."
She exhaled slowly.
"Alright."
Adrian waited.
Elena straightened slightly.
"If I'm stuck in the middle of all this…"
She gestured toward the window again.
"…then I think I deserve to know what kind of war I just walked into."
For the first time that day—
Adrian hesitated.
