The crack spread.
CRRRRACK—
The core split further, jagged lines racing across its surface like fractures in glass. Violent pulses of aether burst outward, slamming into the cave walls, tearing chunks of stone free.
"…Move!" Johan snapped.
Sora didn't argue.
The ground beneath them shook—
then dropped.
BOOM.
A section of the cave floor collapsed into darkness.
Sora jumped back just in time, grabbing Johan's arm and pulling him away from the edge.
"…This place is coming down!"
Another pulse erupted from the core—
stronger.
Unstable.
Wild.
The air itself screamed.
"…It's not just breaking," Johan said, forcing himself to stay upright. "…It's releasing everything at once—!"
As if proving his words—
WHOOOM.
A blast of raw aether tore through the chamber, scorching the walls, cracking the ceiling.
Stone rained down.
Sora raised his arm, fire bursting outward to deflect the debris.
"…Then we don't stay!"
They turned—
running.
Not fighting.
Not thinking.
Just moving.
Behind them—
the core pulsed again.
Louder.
Heavier.
Like a dying heartbeat.
Then—
CRACK.
Sora glanced back—
just for a second.
"…What the—"
The core didn't just break.
It opened.
Inside—
something glowed.
Not natural.
Not like the chaotic aether surrounding it.
This was—
structured.
Precise.
A fragment.
Floating within the collapsing core.
A jagged piece of something metallic… embedded with a faint, pulsing light.
And on its surface—
a symbol.
"…Johan—!"
But Johan had already seen it.
His eyes narrowed.
"…That's not…" he whispered.
"…That's not natural aether…"
Another pulse hit.
Stronger.
The fragment flickered—
and for a brief moment—
the air shifted.
A sound—
barely audible—
slipped through the chaos.
"…subject… unstable…"
Sora froze.
"…Did you hear that?"
"…Yeah…" Johan said quietly.
The fragment cracked.
Light burst from it—
blinding—
violent—
"…We need to go. NOW!" Johan shouted.
Sora didn't hesitate.
He grabbed Johan—
and ran.
The cave began to collapse behind them.
Walls caving in.
Ceiling shattering.
Aether bursting in unpredictable explosions.
BOOM.
CRASH.
SHATTER.
A pillar fell—
blocking their path.
"…Tch—!"
Sora swung his blade—
fire exploding outward—
blasting through the obstruction.
"…This way!"
They pushed forward—
faster—
desperately.
Another collapse—
right behind them.
The ground split again—
forcing them to jump across a widening gap.
Johan stumbled on landing.
"…Ghh—!"
"…Hey—!"
"I'm fine—just MOVE!"
The exit—
just ahead.
Light—
faint—
but real.
The final stretch.
The cave roared behind them—
like it was alive—
like it was trying to swallow them whole.
Sora pushed harder.
Fire flared around his legs—
driving him forward.
Johan forced what little aether he had left—
shifting the air—
just enough—
to accelerate them.
"…Almost—!"
The ceiling above the exit cracked—
then fell.
"…MOVE!"
Sora lunged forward—
grabbing Johan—
pulling him through—
BOOOOOOM—!!!
They burst out of the cave—
rolling across the forest floor—
just as—
The entire cave collapsed.
A massive explosion tore through the mountainside.
Stone—
dust—
and aether—
erupted into the sky.
The shockwave blasted through the forest, bending trees, scattering debris across the ground.
Silence followed.
Heavy.
Sora lay on his back, staring at the sky.
"…Heh…"
A breathless laugh escaped him.
"…We actually made it…"
Beside him—
Johan sat up slowly.
His breathing uneven.
His eyes distant.
"…Barely," he said.
Sora turned his head slightly.
"…You saw that thing too, right?"
Johan didn't answer immediately.
His gaze remained fixed on the collapsed cave.
"…Yeah," he said quietly.
A pause.
"…That wasn't natural."
Sora frowned.
"…Yeah, no kidding."
Johan shook his head.
"…No… I mean all of it."
His voice lowered.
"…The creatures… the core… that fragment…"
His hand clenched slightly.
"…They were made."
Silence.
The wind moved through the trees.
Carrying the faint scent of ash and something far worse.
"…Made…?" Sora repeated.
Johan's eyes narrowed.
"…This wasn't an accident."
He looked back at the destruction—
at the buried cave—
at what remained of whatever they had just fought.
"…Someone created that."
A long silence settled between them.
Heavier than the battle.
Sora exhaled slowly.
"…Then that just means one thing."
Johan glanced at him.
"…What?"
Sora's eyes sharpened.
"…We're not done."
Far beneath the rubble—
deep within what remained of the shattered core—
the fragment flickered once more.
Faint.
Weak.
But still active.
And somewhere—
far beyond the forest—
something responded.
