The rain had stopped, but the night outside Adrian Blake's office still felt heavy and restless. Dark clouds floated across the sky like silent witnesses to something terrible that was about to happen.
Adrian stood near the large glass window, staring at the city lights below.
His mind replayed the same sentence again and again.
The secret he buried for years had finally found its way back to him.
For five years he had convinced himself that the past was gone.
Finished.
Buried forever.
But tonight proved something different.
Some secrets never die.
Behind him, Emma Carter watched quietly. She had noticed Adrian acting strange since the evening began. Normally he was calm, confident, almost unreadable.
But tonight, something had shaken him.
And Emma wanted to know what it was.
"Adrian," she said softly, walking closer. "You've been silent for almost fifteen minutes. That's not normal even for you."
Adrian didn't move.
"Maybe silence is the safest option right now," he replied.
Emma crossed her arms. "That sounds mysterious and annoying at the same time."
Adrian finally turned around and looked at her.
Emma's eyes were full of curiosity.
She always had that effect on him—she asked questions no one else dared to ask.
"Emma," Adrian said slowly, "have you ever felt like someone from your past is watching you… waiting for the perfect moment to come back?"
Emma raised an eyebrow.
"That sounds like a thriller movie."
Adrian's expression didn't change.
"I wish it was."
Emma suddenly felt a small chill run through her.
Before she could ask another question, Adrian's phone vibrated on the desk.
Unknown number.
Adrian stared at the screen for a moment.
Then he answered.
"Adrian Blake speaking."
For a second there was only silence.
Then a voice spoke.
Low.
Cold.
And terrifyingly familiar.
"Hello, Adrian."
Adrian's entire body froze.
That voice.
Impossible.
Emma immediately noticed something was wrong.
"Adrian?" she whispered.
But Adrian couldn't respond.
The voice continued.
"Surprised to hear from me?"
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"You're dead," he said quietly.
A soft laugh echoed through the phone.
"That's what everyone thinks."
Emma's eyes widened.
She couldn't hear the conversation clearly, but Adrian looked like he had just seen a ghost.
The man continued speaking.
"You really believed that little accident ended everything?"
Adrian's voice turned sharp.
"What do you want?"
"Justice," the man replied.
"Or maybe revenge."
Adrian's fingers tightened around the phone.
"You disappeared five years ago."
"Yes," the man said calmly. "And you made sure everyone believed I died in that warehouse fire."
Emma's heart skipped a beat.
Warehouse fire?
The voice continued.
"But I survived, Adrian. And now I'm back."
A pause.
Then the man spoke again, slowly.
"Tonight is just the beginning."
The call ended.
Adrian lowered the phone slowly.
The room felt colder.
Emma walked closer.
"Okay," she said carefully. "I don't know what just happened, but you look like you've just spoken to a ghost."
Adrian looked at her.
"In a way… I did."
Emma frowned.
"Adrian, you're starting to worry me."
Adrian hesitated.
He had spent years hiding the truth.
But somehow Emma was already too close to the storm.
"Five years ago," Adrian began slowly, "three men made a deal."
Emma listened carefully.
"One of them was me," Adrian said.
"The second was Lucas Vance."
Emma's eyes widened.
"The billionaire who disappeared?"
"Yes."
Emma swallowed.
"And the third?"
Adrian hesitated.
Then suddenly—
The lights in the office flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then the entire building went completely dark.
Emma gasped.
"What happened?!"
Adrian reacted instantly.
"Power outage."
"But the whole building?"
Adrian grabbed a flashlight from his desk drawer.
A thin beam of light cut through the darkness.
Something about the situation felt wrong
Very wrong.
Then suddenly—
THUD.
A loud sound came from the hallway outside.
Emma jumped.
"What was that?"
Adrian slowly walked toward the door.
"Stay behind me."
Emma followed closely.
Adrian opened the office door carefully.
The hallway was dimly lit by red emergency lights.
And then Adrian noticed something on the floor.
A black envelope.
Right in front of his office.
Emma whispered, "Was that there before?"
"No."
Adrian picked it up slowly.
On the front of the envelope was a strange red symbol.
The moment Adrian saw it, his face turned pale.
Emma noticed immediately.
"You recognize it."
Adrian nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Emma felt nervous.
"What does it mean?"
Adrian's voice became quiet.
"It means… the past is officially back."
Emma's heart started beating faster.
Adrian opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Emma leaned closer to see it.
The picture showed three men standing outside an old warehouse at night.
One of them was Adrian.
The second was Lucas Vance.
And the third man—
Emma gasped.
"Adrian…"
Her voice trembled.
"That man… isn't he the one who supposedly died in the warehouse fire?"
Adrian stared at the photo.
"Yes."
Emma looked at him in shock.
"But if he died… then who called you?"
Adrian slowly lifted his eyes.
For the first time in years, fear appeared in them.
"Someone," Adrian whispered, "who knows every secret I tried to bury."
At that exact moment—
Footsteps echoed somewhere in the dark hallway.
Slow.
Heavy.
Getting closer.
Emma held her breath.
"Adrian…" she whispered.
"Someone is here."
Adrian turned off the flashlight instantly.
The hallway fell into darkness again.
And from the shadows, a familiar voice spoke.
"Miss me, Adrian?"
Adrian's heart stopped.
Because he recognized that voice.
The man who was supposed to be dead…
Was standing just outside the door.
