Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: There are Accomplices

"What took you so long? I've been waiting forever."

Jeanne walked over and grabbed Rhode's arm, her tone carrying the slight authority of an elder.

The brunette's face darkened. She looked back and forth between the two of them. It was hard for her to imagine how someone with black hair and yellow skin and someone with blonde hair and white skin could be cousins.

"Are you two really related?" she asked, clearly skeptical.

"Of course. We're distant cousins. If you don't believe me, ask him." Jeanne shoved Rhode forward.

"...Yes," Rhode replied.

While Rhode didn't know what kind of game this woman was playing, the faction alignment showed that Jeanne definitely wasn't on the side of the Vampires.

"..."

The brunette huffed and turned away, a flicker of scarlet flashing in her eyes for a split second.

Whatever. It wouldn't be long before both of them were dead anyway.

Afterward, Jeanne pulled Rhode into an inconspicuous corner of the bar.

"I really didn't expect to run into you here."

"Are we close?" Rhode swept an inconspicuous gaze over Jeanne.

She looked slightly different from his blurry memories. Currently, Jeanne was dressed like a "bad girl"—black leather jacket and pants, with jingling jewelry hanging off her clothes. She wore heavy makeup, and a gold chain thicker than a pinky finger hung around her neck. Based on Rhode's experience, that chain was almost certainly stainless steel.

"Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. I am... Jeanne," the girl whispered into Rhode's ear.

Having said her piece, she sat back with a satisfied look, waiting for him to look shocked. To her disappointment, Rhode remained perfectly calm.

"And?"

"What do you mean 'and'? Aren't you... surprised? I'm the Jeanne!"

"There are at least eight or ten thousand people in this world named Jeanne. Why should I be surprised because you have the same name?" Rhode watched her performance stoically.

"Everyone else is just plagiarizing my name! I am the real Jeanne, the Saint who led France against England in history!" Seeing that Rhode still didn't believe her, Jeanne started to get a bit anxious.

"I have a feeling the real Jeanne wouldn't go around calling herself a Saint."

"I can prove it to you!"

At that, Jeanne grabbed Rhode's hand and released a trace of her power. "Believe me now?"

"So you really are her," Rhode nodded.

Seeing that he finally believed her, Jeanne nodded in satisfaction. But just as she was about to explain her purpose for being there, she saw Rhode put on a mysterious expression.

"I should tell you one of my secrets too," he said.

Jeanne paused and instinctively asked, "What secret?"

"Actually, I am King Arthur Pendragon. I never died; my power was just sealed. But if you transfer a million dollars to my account, I can break the seal. Then, I can lead my army to rebuild my kingdom and rule the world. When that happens, I'll appoint you as my Grand General—second only to me, above all others!"

Rhode's tone and expression were dead serious. For a moment, Jeanne almost fell for the nonsense. But she snapped out of it quickly.

Putting aside the question of why King Arthur would be Asian, her Hero Faction had already found the descendants of King Arthur. They were currently planning to contact them to recruit them into the faction! Rhode was clearly lying to mess with her!

"Are you playing with me?" Jeanne was getting a bit angry. She had come to him with sincerity. "Forget it. The reason I looked for you was—"

Before she could finish, a piercing scream suddenly erupted from the dance floor.

"AAAAHHH!"

"MURDER!"

Rhode and Jeanne instinctively looked up. In the center of the dance floor, the scantily clad brunette was pinned on top of a middle-aged man, tearing into him savagely. Her sharp fangs ripped open the man's neck, and hot blood geysered from his arteries. The man's body jerked in convulsions, but it was clear he wouldn't survive.

When the other humans on the dance floor saw this, a chorus of screams broke out.

That first pounce was like a starting gun. The Vampires, who had been holding back for so long, lost all restraint and swarmed the humans around them. The scene looked like a horde of students rushing the cafeteria after the final bell.

In an instant, the bar was filled with the sounds of agonizing screams and the wet tearing of flesh, drowning out the pounding music from the speakers. Ordinary people stood no chance against the strength of a Vampire; in just seconds, over a dozen people had their throats ripped open.

"Damn it!"

Jeanne's heart sank. she didn't expect these Vampires to lose their patience so quickly. Without a second thought, she blurred into a residual image and charged forward.

The Vampires, blinded by bloodlust, had lost all reason. Seeing Jeanne charge in, the nearest Vampire couldn't wait to sink his fangs into her throat.

However, in the next second, a cold glint flashed. The Vampire's head and body parted ways. Before the corpse could even spray blood, it crumbled into ash and vanished.

One had to admit, the way these Vampires died... was quite environmentally friendly.

The other Vampires skidded to a halt. The death of their companion was fresh in their minds, and the hot ash drifting onto their faces snapped them back to reality.

However, a "genius" among the Vampires quickly shouted: "There's only one of her! There's no need to be afraid when there are so many of us!"

As the saying goes, "liquor gives a coward courage." Combined with the sheer number of Vampires in the bar, the others felt their blood boil again. Baring their fangs, they lunged at Jeanne.

Jeanne was instantly surrounded. Because her intervention had drawn the surviving humans to huddle near her, she was unable to attack freely. Although she had left the Church to join the Hero Faction, she still couldn't bring herself to disregard the lives of ordinary people.

Worse yet, a few of these Vampires weren't weak. They were using the low-level Vampires as meat shields, hiding in the shadows and waiting for an opening to ambush her with their special abilities. However, their lucky streak had come to an abrupt end.

Bullets appearing from nowhere tore through their skulls. The Vampires lurking in the shadows were instantly thrown into a panic. Where did these reinforcements come from?!
