Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Curving Bullets

Surrounded by the mob, Jeanne was momentarily stunned by the gunfire. She looked up and saw Rhode's hands constantly spitting tongues of flame. With every thunderous crack, another Vampire's head was blown apart. Before long, the dance floor was covered in a thick layer of ash.

"Are those holy-water-infused bullets?" Jeanne asked, her eyes wide with surprise.

Generally speaking, ordinary firearms were useless against Vampires. Even the lowest-ranked fledglings were difficult to kill with standard lead. But once a weapon was dipped in holy water, even a pencil could become a lethal stake.

Rhode emptied the magazines of both Desert Eagles.

The remaining Vampires, finally catching their breath, stared at him in terror. In just a few seconds, they had lost nearly twenty of their kind. Worse yet, some of the bullets this guy fired seemed to pierce through two targets at once!

"Don't be afraid! He's out of ammo! Get him!" several Mid-Class Vampires snarled from the back.

The Low-Class Vampires, unable to defy the orders of their superiors, could only grit their teeth and charge. But then, they saw the Desert Eagles in Rhode's hands suddenly vanish, only for two more to appear as if by magic.

The fire resumed. The number of Vampires on the dance floor dwindled at an alarming rate. Some of the quicker ones tried to duck behind pillars for cover, but the incoming bullets acted as if they had auto-aim, swerving around the obstacles to drill clean through their heads.

[Skill: Gun Kata — By vibrating the wrists during discharge, the user can make bullets curve (allegedly).]

This skill was something Rhode had picked up long ago from a routine mission. It looked mysterious and felt even more so in practice. In a world where gods and demons existed, a "non-scientific" skill like curving bullets was practically normal.

After two more volleys, only a handful of Vampires remained standing. The survivors were scared out of their wits.

We hid behind the pillars and still got headshotted! Ref, this guy is definitely using hacks!

While the holy-light-bathed bullets were violent, they struggled to deal significant damage to Mid-Class Vampires and above. The ceiling for firearms in a fantasy setting was simply too low. A Mid-Class Vampire could easily block them from all angles just by deploying a basic mana shield.

"You monster!" the remaining Vampires shrieked, looking at Rhode with sheer dread. In less than twenty seconds, he had wiped out every subordinate they had spent years turning. Is this guy even human?!

Jeanne hadn't made another move since Rhode started shooting. She simply stood in front of the human survivors, observing Rhode's every gesture. Seeing that only the leaders remained, she asked, "Do you need help?"

"No." Rhode stowed the Desert Eagles back into his storage space and pulled out the reward from his last mission: the Nichirin Sword.

"There are only two of them! Charge together, or we're all dead!" one of the Vampires roared, forcing down his terror. The other three Mid-Class Vampires agreed. They unleashed their trump cards, revealing their most hideous, clawed forms.

"GRAAAH!" The Vampire who had just spoken lunged forward, moving so fast he left afterimages.

Compared to other races, Vampires generally possessed better physical stats than Devils, though their magical aptitude was inferior. Of course, the downside to their physical power was their weakness to sunlight. Low-Class ones couldn't handle direct light; Mid-Class ones could tolerate it but would eventually die if exposed too long; High-Class ones wouldn't die, but they would become severely weakened.

"You go left, I go right! Surround him!" the Vampire shouted.

Yet, when he reached his designated position, he found himself completely alone. He looked back only to see his three "comrades" sprinting toward the kitchen, where the back exit was located!

"Darn it! You bunch of snakes!" The Vampire screamed in grief and indignation.

Seeing the murderous Rhode smiling at him, his legs gave out. He slid across the floor and fell into a kowtow right in front of Rhode.

"Let's negotiate... don't kill me, okay?" He looked up, his hideous face attempting a submissive expression.

"Sure." Rhode's blade fell without a second thought, his eyes not even blinking.

As the head parted from the body, blood geysered three meters into the air, but Rhode had already stepped aside. He turned his gaze toward the kitchen. The three fleeing Vampires were almost at the door. They planned to vanish into the crowds outside. No matter how strong an exorcist was, surely they wouldn't dare start a massacre in public?

As for what happened after that... who cared! They just had to survive.

[Clock Up]

Rhode entered a state of super-acceleration. The world in his eyes slowed down to a crawl. Even the blood spray from the previous Vampire's neck seemed to hang in the air in an eerie, slow-motion dance as the body slowly crumbled into ash. There was a strange, macabre beauty to it.

He strolled leisurely over to the three fleeing Vampires and deactivated the acceleration. When they realized Rhode had appeared beside them out of thin air, their souls nearly left their bodies.

"Don't come any closer!" The three Vampires shrank into the corner, their sanity crumbling as their bodies shook violently.

"I have an eighty-year-old mother—"

Shink! A cold glint flashed. Rhode didn't give the remaining Vampires any chance to beg for mercy. They didn't even have time to scream before they burst into dust under the edge of the Nichirin Sword.

[Mission "Interview with the Vampire" Completed] [Reward: Sacred Gear "Dragon Hand" x1] [Dragon Hand: When activated, increases the user's strength by threefold. The higher the user's base stats, the lower the relative boost.]

"Tch. Useless garbage," Rhode clicked his tongue.

Though it was called a "Sacred Gear," the boost was extremely limited. With his current strength, the Dragon Hand wouldn't provide much of an edge. It felt like a bit of a loss. But then again, his opponents were just low-level thugs; it would be abnormal if he pulled a Longinus out of this. Trash rewards from missions were simply Rhode's daily routine.

He walked back to the dance floor. The survivors were still huddled around Jeanne, too terrified to move. The battle had inflicted deep psychological trauma; they had come here for a good time, not to be played with like toys. It would take a lifetime to forget tonight.

Seeing Rhode return, Jeanne leaped gracefully out of the circle, her beautiful eyes fixed on him. She realized the intelligence her superiors had provided was likely incorrect.
