Chapter 28 - The price of safety

The mansion was eerily silent in the aftermath. Guards patrolled every hallway, weapons in hand, but the tension in the air hadn't dissipated. Broken furniture, shattered glass, and overturned chairs marked the intruders' brief but violent presence.

I sat on the edge of the grand staircase, hands trembling, trying to calm my racing heartbeat. The Don stood near the shattered study door, his expression unreadable, though his jaw was tight, eyes dark and stormy.

"You handled yourself well," he said finally, voice low, almost a growl. "Better than I expected."

I swallowed hard, the adrenaline still surging. "I… I didn't do much."

"You did enough," he replied, stepping closer. His hand brushed mine, possessive, grounding, and I felt the warmth of him seeping into my bones. "But this—" he gestured around the room, "—is only the beginning. They'll come again. And next time, they might not be so careless."

My stomach tightened. "Why me? Why are they so obsessed with me?"

He hesitated, the first crack in his otherwise impenetrable armor. "Because of the auction," he said slowly. "Because of what you are, what you represent. And because they think they can use you to get to me."

I felt a shiver run down my spine. "So… I'm a pawn?"

"No," he said, his dark eyes locking on mine. "You're mine. And anyone who thinks they can use you will regret it. I won't let them touch you. Ever."

Despite the reassurance, fear gnawed at me. The reality of my situation was sinking in: being with him meant safety, but it also meant danger. My life was no longer my own; it belonged to him—and anyone targeting him now targeted me too.

He pulled me close, lips brushing my hair. "Rest tonight," he whispered. "Tomorrow, we plan. And I promise you, they won't get another chance."

I leaned into him, comforted yet unsettled. Being claimed by him meant protection, but it also meant being tied to his world—a world of danger, secrets, and relentless enemies. I knew then that surviving the past was nothing compared to surviving what was coming.

The fire in the hearth flickered, casting shadows across his face, and I realized with a mix of fear and desire: I belonged to him, completely. And together, we would face whatever darkness lay ahead.
