The mansion was quiet, but the silence had taken on a different edge tonight.
I sat in the study, trying to lose myself in a book, but the words blurred. My mind kept returning to the man who had once ruled my life and now ruled my heart.
A soft knock broke my thoughts.
He entered, his usual calm aura intact, though there was a tension in his shoulders I hadn't seen before.
"We have visitors," he said quietly.
I looked up, startled. "Visitors?"
He nodded, moving closer. "Uninvited ones. People who might be testing the waters, seeing if we're vulnerable."
My pulse quickened. Even now, after everything, danger never felt far away.
"Should I leave?" I asked, worried.
He shook his head, a small smirk tugging at his lips. "No. I want you here. You've come too far to hide now."
Minutes later, the first knock came at the main entrance. Then another. Shadows moving at the edge of the property, careful and calculated.
He didn't panic. He never did. But I could feel the tension in the way he walked, the way his eyes swept over every corner of the estate.
"Stay close," he murmured, his hand brushing mine.
I nodded, my fingers tightening around his. I realized something then: I had been afraid for so long, waiting for someone to protect me. But now, fear didn't paralyze me. It sharpened me.
When the gates finally opened, I caught a glimpse of faces from the past—people who thought they could challenge us. But he was ready, as always. And this time, I was ready too.
The shadows of the past had arrived, but we would face them together.
