Chapter 45 - Facing the past

The night air was thick with anticipation as the figures approached the mansion gates. My pulse quickened, but I refused to step back.

He stood at my side, calm and unyielding, like a wall I could lean on. His hand brushed mine, a silent reminder that I wasn't alone.

When the visitors finally stepped onto the grounds, their faces were familiar — former allies of my enemies, men who had once ruled parts of the syndicate with cruel precision. They had thought the collapse of the organization meant we were weak.

They were wrong.

"I warned you," he said, voice low but dangerous. "No one touches this place. No one touches her."

I felt my chest swell with pride. For the first time, I realized I was no longer the girl who had been terrified of every shadow. I could stand beside him, confident in my own strength.

The men hesitated, sizing up the mansion and its occupants. Then, one of them stepped forward. "We just wanted… a word," he said cautiously.

"A word?" he repeated, dark eyes narrowing. "You speak of words after everything you've done?"

I took a step forward, surprising even myself. "You don't get to test us," I said firmly. "Leave now, or there will be consequences you won't survive."

The men froze, clearly debating whether to challenge us. Then, after a tense moment, they backed away, muttering under their breaths before retreating into the shadows.

I exhaled slowly, my hands trembling slightly — not from fear, but from adrenaline.

He placed a hand on my shoulder, and I leaned into him, letting the comfort of his presence calm the storm inside me.

"You handled that well," he murmured, brushing a kiss across my temple. "I'm proud of you."

I smiled softly. "We handled that well."

And in that quiet moment, I realized something important: the past would always try to find us, but together, we were stronger than anything that could come our way.
