The first light of morning filtered through the hotel curtains, casting a soft glow across the room.
Keifer stirred slowly, still lying on the sofa, and his eyes opened to find Jay curled on top of him, her head resting against his chest.
For a moment, he just stared, a small, almost imperceptible smile tugging at his lips. He could feel her warmth, hear her soft breaths, and the steady rhythm of her heartbeat.
Still asleep… safe, he thought.
Jay shifted slightly, blinking as the morning light hit her eyes.
"Oh," she whispered, realizing where she was.
Keifer's eyes opened fully now, calm but tender. "Morning."
Jay froze for a second, then pulled back slightly, embarrassed. "I… I didn't mean to—"
"It's fine," Keifer said softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "You're safe."
Jay's cheeks warmed, but she didn't move away. Instead, she stayed close, lingering in the comfort of his arms for just a moment longer before finally rolling off and sitting on the edge of the sofa.
They dressed quickly, the air tense but quiet. Both avoided too much eye contact, though the occasional glance held sparks neither could deny.
Jay's mind raced. The events of the night, Keifer's sudden protective streak, his careful vigilance—all of it pressed on her.
Finally, she spoke.
"Keifer… what's happening? Why… why did you… last night?"
Keifer hesitated, leaning against the wall, the weight of the previous night pressing down on him.
"Jay… it's complicated."
She crossed her arms, her voice firm but trembling slightly. "No. You will tell me. Right now. I'm not leaving until you do."
His jaw tightened. He could see the fire in her eyes—the determination that always matched his own.
Keifer took a deep breath. "Someone has been threatening you. Letters, people watching… it's dangerous, Jay. I didn't tell you because I didn't want you panicking. I wanted to handle it. Keep you safe. That's why I made you stay in the hotel… why I stayed close last night. Every step, every move, I was watching out for you."
Jay's eyes widened. Her hand flew to her mouth. "You… did all this… for me?"
Keifer nodded quietly. "Yes. I… I couldn't risk you getting hurt."
Jay's chest tightened. She felt something rise inside her—fear, relief, admiration, and… something deeper.
"Keifer…" she whispered, taking a step closer.
Without thinking, without warning, she pressed her lips to his. The kiss was desperate, urgent, a release of all the tension she'd been holding in.
Keifer froze for a second—then instinctively wrapped his arms around her, pulling her onto his lap, deepening the kiss.
When they finally broke apart, Jay rested her forehead against his, breathing heavily.
"You… risked your life for me," she murmured.
Keifer's hands tightened slightly on her back. "I'll do it a hundred times if I have to. You're… you're worth it."
Jay's lips curved into a soft, slightly mischievous smile. "I think… I might just keep you around for that."
Keifer smirked, leaning down to brush his lips lightly against hers again. "Good. Because I'm not going anywhere."
