Chapter 36 - Chapter 35 - The Enemy Within

No one slept that night.

Not really.

The house was too quiet.

Too controlled.

Too… watchful.

It wasn't the kind of silence that brought peace.

It was the kind that made you feel like someone was always standing behind you—even when you were alone.

I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the door.

Dante's words echoed in my mind.

They don't leave this house.

My chest tightened.

It sounded simple.

But it wasn't.

Because it meant one thing.

Whoever the traitor was…

They were already trapped.

A soft knock came at my door.

I stiffened slightly.

"Come in," I said.

The door opened slowly.

A maid stepped in, her movements careful, almost hesitant.

"Miss Elena… Mr. Moretti asked that you come downstairs."

My heart skipped.

Now?

I nodded. "Okay."

The walk downstairs felt different.

Every step heavier.

Every shadow deeper.

And for the first time since I arrived here…

I didn't feel like a guest.

Or even a prisoner.

I felt like I was part of something.

Something dangerous.

The main hall was already filled when I got there.

Men stood in small groups, their voices low, their expressions tight.

No one was relaxed.

No one was at ease.

Because now…

It wasn't just about fighting enemies outside.

It was about finding one inside.

And then—

Dante.

He stood at the center of it all.

Still.

Calm.

Controlled.

But there was something different about him tonight.

Something colder.

More distant.

More… dangerous.

The moment I stepped in, his eyes found me.

Of course they did.

They always did.

"Come here," he said.

I walked toward him slowly.

Aware of every gaze in the room.

Watching.

Measuring.

Wondering.

When I stopped beside him, he didn't look away.

"You stay close," he said quietly.

A pause.

Then softer—

"No matter what happens."

My chest tightened.

I nodded.

"Everyone here knows why we're standing in this room," Dante said, his voice cutting through the silence effortlessly.

The murmurs died instantly.

"All routes compromised. Every move anticipated."

A pause.

"That doesn't happen without help."

The tension snapped tighter.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Dante's gaze swept across the room.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Like he was already searching.

Already calculating.

"If there's something anyone wants to say…"

Silence.

Heavy.

Unmoving.

"…this is your chance."

Nothing.

Not a word.

Not a sound.

I felt it then.

That shift.

Subtle.

But real.

Fear.

Not loud.

Not obvious.

But there.

Hidden in the stillness.

In the way people avoided eye contact.

In the way shoulders stiffened just slightly.

Anyone here…

Could be lying.

"Good," Dante said quietly.

And somehow…

That word felt worse than anger.

"Lockdown starts now."

My breath caught slightly.

"No one leaves without clearance," he continued. "No calls. No outside contact. Everything is monitored."

A pause.

"If you're innocent…"

His voice dropped.

"You have nothing to worry about."

A chill ran down my spine.

Because we all knew what that meant.

If you weren't—

You had everything to worry about.

The room slowly began to break apart after that.

Men moving again.

But differently now.

Not relaxed.

Not coordinated.

Careful.

Suspicious.

Watching each other.

I stayed where I was.

Because he told me to.

Because I wanted to.

Because leaving suddenly didn't feel like an option anymore.

"You're thinking too loudly."

I looked up.

Dante.

He was watching me.

Of course he was.

"What does that even mean?" I asked quietly.

"It means I can see it on your face."

I exhaled softly, looking away for a second.

"Is that a problem?"

"It depends."

"On what?"

His gaze held mine.

"What you're thinking."

I hesitated.

Then—

"Anyone could be the one, right?"

"Yes."

The answer came without hesitation.

My chest tightened.

"And you don't know who."

A pause.

"No."

That… surprised me.

"You're not sure?" I asked.

His expression didn't change.

"I don't deal in certainty without proof."

That sounded like him.

Careful.

Precise.

Controlled.

I glanced around the room again.

At the people.

At the tension.

At the quiet suspicion building between them.

"How do you even begin to figure it out?" I asked.

Dante stepped slightly closer.

Not enough to draw attention.

Just enough for his voice to lower.

"You watch."

My breath slowed slightly.

"You wait."

A pause.

"Then you let them make a mistake."

A chill ran through me.

Because suddenly…

This didn't feel like chaos.

It felt like a game.

A dangerous one.

And the traitor—

Didn't even know they were already losing.

"Is that what you're doing now?" I asked.

"Yes."

"Waiting?"

His eyes darkened slightly.

"For the right moment."

A sudden noise echoed from the far end of the hall.

Raised voices.

Sharp.

Tense.

Both our heads turned instantly.

Two men.

Arguing.

Not loudly.

But enough.

Enough to draw attention.

"You think I don't see how you've been acting?" one of them snapped.

"And what exactly is that supposed to mean?" the other shot back.

Suspicion.

Raw.

Unfiltered.

It was starting.

Dante didn't move immediately.

He just watched.

Observed.

Let it play out.

"You've been making calls," the first man said.

"I always make calls!"

"Not like that!"

The tension rose quickly.

Too quickly.

Like something deeper was already there.

"Enough."

Dante's voice cut through the room.

Instant silence.

Both men froze.

All eyes turned.

"Step forward," he said.

The two men hesitated.

Then slowly—

They did.

My heart started to pound.

This was it.

This was how it started.

Dante looked at them.

One.

Then the other.

Silent.

Measuring.

Deadly calm.

"Explain," he said.

The first man spoke quickly.

"He's been acting off. Leaving rooms. Taking calls outside—"

"I've always done that!" the second interrupted.

"Not during lockdown—"

"I didn't know we were in one yet!"

Their voices rose again.

Tension snapping between them.

"Stop."

Dante didn't raise his voice.

He didn't need to.

Silence fell instantly.

He stepped closer.

To them.

But I felt it too.

That shift.

That pressure.

That power.

"Accusations without proof mean nothing," he said calmly.

The first man swallowed.

"But—"

"I said nothing."

The man fell silent immediately.

Dante's gaze shifted to the second man.

"You."

The man stiffened.

"Yes?"

"Who were you calling?"

A pause.

Too long.

My chest tightened.

"Contacts," he said. "Routine—"

"During compromised operations?"

The man hesitated again.

And this time—

Everyone saw it.

The room shifted.

Subtle.

But real.

Attention sharpened.

Focus locked in.

"I can explain—"

"I'm sure you can."

Dante's voice was calm.

Too calm.

And that made it worse.

For a second, no one moved.

No one breathed.

Then—

"Take him," Dante said.

My heart stopped.

Two men stepped forward immediately, grabbing him.

"Wait—! I didn't—this isn't—!"

His voice rose.

Panicked now.

Desperate.

"I didn't betray anyone!"

But no one stepped in.

No one defended him.

Because doubt…

Was enough.

"Check everything," Dante added. "Phones. Records. Movements."

"Yes, boss."

The man struggled as they dragged him away.

"I'm loyal! You know I am—!"

His voice echoed through the hall.

Then—

Gone.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Real.

I swallowed slowly.

"That was fast," I said quietly.

Dante didn't look at me immediately.

"No," he said.

"It wasn't."

A pause.

"That's been building."

My chest tightened.

"So he's the one?"

His gaze shifted to me.

Sharp.

Careful.

"I didn't say that."

Right.

Of course not.

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

"This is just the beginning," he continued.

And something about the way he said it made a chill run through me.

Because I understood what he meant.

One suspect down.

But the real enemy?

Still hidden.

Still watching.

Still waiting.

And now…

Everyone in this house knew it.

I glanced around the room again.

At the faces.

At the tension.

At the quiet fear settling in.

I felt it too.

Not just fear of the outside world.

But fear of what was inside.

Because in a house full of enemies—

Trust wasn't just dangerous.

It was deadly.
