Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 — The Penthouse

The elevator didn't make a sound.

It just… rose.

Alex Carter stood alone inside it.

Empty hands.

The contract was gone.

Taken.

Filed.

Final.

Marriage—

Processed like paperwork.

He stared at his reflection in the metal wall.

Same face.

Same jacket.

Same tired eyes.

But something was different.

There was no going back.

The doors opened.

Silence.

A hallway stretched ahead.

Dark wood.

Soft lights.

No voices.

No footsteps.

Just control.

Alex stepped out.

At the end of the hall—

Adrian Laurent waited.

Perfect.

Still.

Untouchable.

"Follow me."

Alex walked toward him.

"Where are we going?"

Adrian turned.

"Home."

Alex blinked.

"That was fast."

"You signed."

That was the only answer.

They reached the door.

Adrian opened it.

Alex stepped inside—

And stopped.

The world changed.

Glass walls.

Everywhere.

The city stretched beneath them like it belonged to this place.

Lights.

Movement.

Power.

Too much.

The penthouse wasn't just big.

It was overwhelming.

Minimal.

Perfect.

Cold.

Nothing here was accidental.

Alex walked forward slowly.

His footsteps sounded wrong.

Too loud.

Like he didn't belong.

"You live here?"

"Yes."

Alex moved toward the window.

Looked down.

Far down.

The city felt small.

"You can see everything," he said.

"Almost."

Alex turned slightly.

"That's not terrifying at all."

No answer.

Of course.

He walked through the space.

Sofa.

Piano.

Art.

Money everywhere—

Without trying to show it.

"This is insane."

"It is functional."

Alex laughed.

"Functional?"

"Yes."

"Remind me never to ask you what luxury means."

Adrian didn't react.

He moved to the kitchen.

Poured water.

Handed a glass.

Alex took it.

Still staring around.

"For the next year," Adrian said,

"you live here."

Alex blinked.

"You're serious."

"Yes."

"And my apartment?"

A pause.

Then—

"It's already handled."

Alex froze.

"...handled?"

"Your belongings arrive tonight."

Silence.

"You packed my life?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"This afternoon."

Alex stared at him.

"That's not normal."

"You were leaving anyway."

"I didn't say that."

"You signed."

…there it was again.

Alex rubbed his forehead.

"You're unbelievable."

"I'm efficient."

Alex exhaled.

Slow.

Tired.

"Yeah… I noticed."

He walked down the hallway.

Opened a door.

A bedroom.

Huge.

Clean.

Perfect.

Bigger than his entire apartment.

He stepped inside.

"This is a guest room?"

"Yes."

Alex laughed.

Of course it was.

"How many rooms?"

"Four."

Naturally.

Alex leaned against the door.

"Which one is yours?"

Adrian pointed.

"Good."

A pause.

"So I know where not to go."

For a second—

Adrian almost reacted.

Almost.

They returned to the living room.

Alex dropped onto the sofa.

Soft.

Too soft.

He looked up.

"Alright."

Adrian waited.

"Let's talk rules."

"There are three."

"I remember."

Alex raised a finger.

"No love."

"Yes."

"Easy."

"No jealousy."

"Still easy."

Adrian's eyes darkened slightly.

"No breaking the contract."

Silence.

Alex leaned forward.

"And if someone does?"

A pause.

"Consequences."

"Bad ones?"

No answer.

That was answer enough.

Alex leaned back.

"Yeah… figured."

Silence filled the room.

Then—

"So when do we go public?"

"Tonight."

Alex sat up.

"What?"

"There is a gala."

Of course there was.

"And you're bringing me."

"Yes."

Alex laughed.

"This is insane."

"It is effective."

Alex stood.

"You expect me to walk into a billionaire party like this?"

Adrian looked at him.

Carefully.

"No."

Alex frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"Come."

They entered another room.

Clothes.

Rows of them.

Suits.

Shoes.

Everything perfect.

Prepared.

Alex stared.

"You already planned this."

"Yes."

"You were that sure?"

"Yes."

Alex picked up a jacket.

Put it on.

Perfect fit.

That was worse.

"...that's creepy."

"My assistant is precise."

"You measured me?"

No answer.

Which meant yes.

Alex shook his head.

"This keeps getting worse."

They returned to the main room.

City lights rising.

Night coming.

Alex stood in the middle of it all.

"You know… this still feels like a mistake."

Adrian watched him.

"Then leave."

Silence.

Simple.

Clean.

Leave.

Alex looked around.

The view.

The space.

The life.

Then—

He remembered.

Messages.

Debt.

Fear.

He shook his head.

"No."

Adrian nodded once.

"Then get ready."

Alex walked to the window.

The city stretched endlessly below.

"You know the strangest part?"

Adrian waited.

"I married a billionaire today."

"Yes."

"And somehow… that's not even the weirdest thing."

Silence.

Alex turned.

"Why do you live alone here?"

Adrian looked at the city.

A pause.

"Because it's easier."

That answer—

Was too honest.

Alex watched him.

For a second—

He saw something else.

Not power.

Not control.

Something… empty.

He looked away.

Dangerous men weren't lonely.

They were just dangerous.

"So," Alex said,

"When do I meet your terrifying world?"

Adrian checked his watch.

"Three hours."

Alex groaned.

"I'm not ready for that."

"You will be."

Alex turned toward the hallway.

"I'm going to shower."

A step.

Then he stopped.

"This might be the worst decision I've ever made."

Adrian didn't move.

"Possibly."

Alex smiled slightly.

Then disappeared down the hall.

Behind him—

Adrian Laurent stood alone.

Watching the city.

Waiting.
