Chapter 19 - Chapter 19 — The Port of War

The night air at Port Meridian smelled like salt and fuel.

Alex stepped out of the car and looked across the harbor.

Massive cargo ships sat in the dark water like floating cities.

Cranes towered above the docks.

Lights reflected across the waves in long broken lines.

The port never slept.

But tonight it felt different.

Tighter.

Tenser.

Alex adjusted his jacket.

"This place is huge."

Adrian stepped beside him.

"Yes."

Alex looked toward the distant cranes.

"And Victor wants to shut this down."

"Yes."

Alex exhaled slowly.

"That would hurt."

"It would cripple us."

Alex glanced at him.

"You say that very calmly."

Adrian didn't answer.

Black security vehicles surrounded the dock entrance.

Laurent International guards stood near the gates.

Several men approached as Adrian walked forward.

The lead guard nodded.

"Mr. Laurent."

Adrian stopped.

"Status?"

The guard spoke quickly.

"Victor's cargo ship entered the harbor twenty minutes ago."

Alex frowned.

"That was fast."

The guard continued.

"They're requesting exclusive loading access."

Adrian's expression didn't change.

"That request was denied."

Alex nodded.

"Good."

The guard hesitated.

"But they're moving equipment anyway."

Alex sighed.

"That's bad."

Adrian looked toward the water.

In the distance, a massive cargo ship slowly turned toward the main dock.

The name painted on the side was clear even in the dim light.

IRON CROWN

Alex squinted.

"That's Victor's ship."

"Yes."

Alex crossed his arms.

"He's not subtle."

Adrian walked toward the edge of the dock.

Alex followed.

The wind coming off the water was cold.

The harbor lights flickered across Adrian's face.

"You expected this," Alex said.

"Yes."

Alex leaned on the railing.

"Then why come here personally?"

Adrian looked out across the water.

"Because Victor wants to see me lose."

Alex nodded slowly.

"And you want him to watch you win."

"Yes."

Alex smiled faintly.

"That's petty."

Adrian didn't deny it.

A black SUV rolled onto the dock behind them.

The doors opened.

Elena Vargas stepped out.

She walked toward them quickly.

"Security teams are in position."

Adrian nodded.

"What about the harbor authority?"

Elena handed him a document.

"They confirmed your control of the port."

Alex looked at the paper.

"That sounds official."

"It is," Elena said.

Alex looked toward the massive cargo ship again.

"So Victor is about to break the rules."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Alex sighed.

"Of course he is."

A horn sounded across the harbor.

The cargo ship slowed.

Then stopped.

Alex leaned closer to the railing.

"They're not docking."

Adrian watched the ship carefully.

"No."

Alex frowned.

"What are they doing?"

The answer arrived seconds later.

Several smaller boats separated from the cargo ship.

They moved quickly toward the dock.

Alex blinked.

"That's unusual."

Elena's voice turned sharper.

"They're unloading early."

Alex looked at Adrian.

"That's illegal."

"Yes."

Alex shook his head.

"Victor really doesn't care."

Adrian stepped away from the railing.

"Security."

Several guards approached immediately.

"Block the loading zone."

The guards nodded and moved quickly.

Alex watched them run across the dock.

"This is escalating fast."

"Yes."

Another vehicle approached the dock entrance.

This one moved slower.

More confident.

Alex recognized it immediately.

"Speak of the devil."

The car stopped near the entrance.

Victor Moreau stepped out.

Perfect suit.

Perfect posture.

Even at a shipping port in the middle of the night.

Alex laughed quietly.

"That man really commits to the aesthetic."

Victor walked toward them slowly.

Two security men followed behind him.

He stopped several feet away.

His eyes moved across the dock.

Then settled on Adrian.

"You came."

Adrian didn't answer.

Victor glanced toward the harbor.

"My ship looks beautiful tonight."

Alex crossed his arms.

"It also looks illegal."

Victor smiled faintly.

"Rules are flexible."

Elena stepped forward.

"This port belongs to Laurent International."

Victor looked at her briefly.

"Yes."

Then he returned his attention to Adrian.

"But tonight it belongs to opportunity."

Alex sighed.

"You really enjoy speeches."

Victor ignored him.

He walked closer to the railing.

The smaller boats were already approaching the dock.

Crates and cargo containers were visible on their decks.

Victor gestured toward them.

"Do you know what's inside?"

Adrian said nothing.

Victor answered his own question.

"Rare earth minerals."

Alex frowned.

"That sounds expensive."

Victor nodded.

"Very."

Alex leaned closer to Adrian.

"That shipment alone could shift the market."

"Yes."

Victor continued.

"And if my shipment controls the corridor tonight…"

He paused.

"Your empire stalls."

The words landed quietly.

But the meaning was clear.

Alex rubbed his chin.

"You're trying to choke his network."

Victor smiled.

"Exactly."

Alex looked toward the approaching boats again.

Then back at Victor.

"That's bold."

Victor's smile widened slightly.

"Bold wins wars."

Adrian finally spoke.

"No."

Victor raised an eyebrow.

"No?"

Adrian's voice remained calm.

"Preparation wins wars."

Victor chuckled.

"You're still confident."

"Yes."

Victor gestured toward the harbor.

"My cargo is already moving."

Adrian didn't react.

Alex noticed that.

Which meant something was coming.

Victor leaned slightly closer.

"Tell me, Adrian."

Adrian waited.

"How does it feel to lose control of your own port?"

The wind moved across the water.

The smaller boats reached the dock.

Workers began moving crates onto the loading platform.

Victor watched the operation with quiet satisfaction.

Alex glanced at Adrian.

"You're very calm for someone losing a shipping lane."

Adrian looked at him briefly.

"Wait."

Alex frowned.

"For what?"

Adrian nodded toward the far end of the harbor.

Alex turned.

At first he saw nothing.

Then the lights appeared.

A line of ships moving slowly through the darkness.

Huge vessels.

Much larger than Victor's cargo ship.

Alex blinked.

"Well."

Victor noticed them too.

His expression shifted slightly.

"What is that?"

Adrian answered calmly.

"My fleet."

The ships continued moving forward.

Their hulls cut through the water like steel mountains.

Alex laughed quietly.

"You called reinforcements."

Victor turned slowly toward Adrian.

"You're bluffing."

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

The first ship sounded its horn.

The sound echoed across the harbor.

Security teams on the dock moved quickly.

Victor's smaller boats hesitated.

Alex leaned against the railing.

"Looks like traffic just got crowded."

Victor's jaw tightened slightly.

The fleet moved into the harbor.

One ship stopped directly between Victor's cargo vessel and the dock.

Blocking the route.

Another ship moved closer behind it.

Closing the gap.

Victor stared at the water.

"You planned this."

Adrian nodded once.

"Yes."

Alex smiled faintly.

"You walked into his trap."

Victor's voice grew colder.

"This isn't over."

Alex shrugged.

"It rarely is."

Victor stepped back from the railing.

He looked at Adrian.

Then at Alex.

His voice was quiet now.

"You both enjoy this too much."

Alex smiled.

"Probably."

Victor turned and walked back toward his car.

His men followed.

The cargo boats on the dock slowed their work.

Laurent security teams surrounded the loading area.

Victor's operation had stalled.

Alex watched the fleet in the harbor.

"That was impressive."

Adrian looked out at the water.

"Yes."

Alex crossed his arms.

"You knew he'd come here."

"Yes."

Alex shook his head.

"You really are ruthless."

Adrian didn't respond.

The harbor lights reflected across the water again.

The battle wasn't finished.

But tonight—

Victor Moreau had lost the first round.

And Alex Carter had just witnessed how billionaires fought their wars.
