Chapter 31 - Chapter 31 — The Records

The elevator ride down felt longer than usual.

Alex leaned against the mirrored wall and watched the numbers change slowly.

Penthouse.

Private level.

Executive floor.

Each number blinked like a quiet countdown.

Adrian stood beside him with the same calm posture he always carried. Hands relaxed. Shoulders straight. Expression unreadable.

Alex glanced sideways.

"You get very quiet before something dangerous happens."

Adrian looked at him.

"Yes."

"That's not comforting."

"No."

Alex smiled faintly.

The elevator continued downward.

"You think Victor already knows about these records?"

Adrian answered immediately.

"No."

Alex nodded slowly.

"Good."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

Alex shrugged.

"Because surprise is fun."

The elevator doors opened.

The executive floor looked exactly like it always did—clean glass walls, polished floors, quiet lighting, and people who moved quickly but pretended not to.

Except today something felt different.

Staff members glanced at them more than usual.

Alex noticed.

"So the building already knows something's happening."

Adrian walked toward the conference room.

"Yes."

Alex followed.

"That's impressive."

The glass door opened automatically.

Inside, Elena stood beside a long table covered with folders and digital screens.

Three large monitors glowed against the far wall.

Alex stepped inside and looked around.

"Well."

Elena glanced up.

"You're early."

Alex sat in one of the chairs.

"That's because someone dragged me into corporate warfare."

Adrian ignored that and walked to the table.

"Elena."

She handed him a tablet.

"We recovered everything from the original port partnership."

Alex leaned back in his chair.

"That sounds promising."

Elena tapped one of the monitors.

A series of scanned documents appeared on the screen.

Contracts.

Shipping agreements.

Old financial ledgers.

The dates were nearly twenty years old.

Alex squinted.

"That's ancient."

"Yes," Elena said.

"That's the point."

Adrian studied the documents silently.

Alex watched his face.

No reaction.

Of course.

Elena zoomed in on a specific page.

"This was the final agreement between Laurent Shipping and Moreau Holdings."

Alex leaned forward.

"Before everything collapsed."

"Yes."

Alex scanned the page.

The legal language made his head hurt.

"So where's the interesting part?"

Elena tapped another document.

"This."

A new page appeared.

Alex frowned.

"Wait."

He leaned closer.

"That signature…"

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex looked between them.

"Someone changed the terms."

Elena crossed her arms.

"Yes."

Alex read the page again.

The original agreement split ownership of Port Meridian equally.

But the revision—signed two weeks later—gave majority control to Moreau Holdings.

Alex blinked.

"That's not subtle."

"No," Elena said.

Alex looked at Adrian.

"Your father signed this."

"Yes."

Alex frowned.

"But the date…"

He pointed at the corner of the document.

"That's after the port had already transferred."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Alex leaned back slowly.

"Well."

Adrian waited.

"That's fraud."

"Yes."

The room went quiet.

Alex rubbed his jaw.

"So Victor's father manipulated the contract."

"Yes."

Alex looked back at the screen.

"And your father took the fall."

Adrian didn't answer.

Alex glanced at him.

"That's why you destroyed their company."

"Yes."

Elena stepped closer to the table.

"There's more."

Alex sighed.

"Of course there is."

She tapped the screen again.

Another document appeared.

Bank records.

Alex squinted.

"This is where my brain stops working."

Elena explained calmly.

"Two days before the contract revision, Moreau Holdings moved nearly thirty million dollars through a shell account."

Alex blinked.

"Bribe."

"Yes."

Alex whistled softly.

"That's messy."

Adrian remained silent.

Alex leaned forward again.

"So Victor's entire family empire started with fraud."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Alex smiled faintly.

"Well."

Adrian looked at him.

"Well what?"

Alex leaned back again.

"That's exactly the kind of story Victor doesn't want told."

Elena folded her arms.

"Yes."

Alex tapped the table lightly.

"So what happens if this becomes public?"

Elena answered immediately.

"Moreau Holdings collapses."

Alex raised an eyebrow.

"That fast?"

"Yes."

Adrian finally spoke.

"It would destroy investor confidence."

Alex nodded slowly.

"Which means Victor loses everything."

"Yes."

Alex looked back at the documents.

"Wow."

He leaned back in his chair again.

"For a man who loves history so much…"

He smiled faintly.

"…that's a terrible past to keep hidden."

Adrian didn't respond.

Alex studied him.

"You already knew about this."

"Yes."

Alex frowned.

"Then why didn't you use it years ago?"

Adrian's voice stayed calm.

"Because destroying his father's company was enough."

Alex stared.

"Well."

"That was very restrained of you."

Adrian ignored the sarcasm.

Alex tapped the table again.

"So now Victor pokes the past…"

He nodded toward the screen.

"…and suddenly the past pokes back."

Elena almost smiled.

"Yes."

Alex turned in his chair.

"You know what this means."

Adrian asked quietly,

"What?"

Alex's voice stayed calm.

"You win."

Elena shook her head.

"Not yet."

Alex frowned.

"Why?"

Elena gestured toward the documents.

"These records prove fraud."

"Yes."

"But releasing them publicly would trigger lawsuits, investigations, and financial chaos."

Alex shrugged.

"That sounds like Victor's problem."

Adrian looked at him.

"It would also damage the port network."

Alex paused.

Right.

Nothing in this world broke cleanly.

He sighed.

"Of course it would."

Elena closed one of the folders.

"There's another option."

Alex looked at her.

"I like options."

She met Adrian's eyes.

"We show Victor first."

Alex blinked.

"That sounds… confrontational."

Adrian nodded once.

"Yes."

Alex leaned forward again.

"So instead of dropping the bomb publicly…"

He gestured at the documents.

"…you let him see the bomb."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Alex smiled slowly.

"Oh."

Adrian waited.

"Oh what?"

"That's evil."

Elena ignored him.

"He'll know exactly what we have."

Alex nodded.

"And he'll panic."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex leaned back.

"Which means he makes a mistake."

Elena nodded again.

"Yes."

Alex laughed quietly.

"I love this plan."

Adrian looked at him.

"Why?"

Alex gestured toward the screen.

"Because Victor thinks this war is about memory."

He tapped the table.

"But this…"

He smiled faintly.

"…is about truth."

The room went quiet again.

Elena turned off the screen.

The documents faded into darkness.

Alex stood up slowly.

"So when do we show him?"

Adrian answered without hesitation.

"Tonight."

Alex raised an eyebrow.

"That's aggressive."

"Yes."

Alex nodded.

"I approve."

Elena gathered the folders carefully.

"I'll arrange the meeting."

Alex stretched slightly.

"You know what I'm starting to realize?"

Adrian asked,

"What?"

Alex smiled faintly.

"Victor should have left that photograph alone."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex walked toward the glass wall and looked out over the city.

The towers rose everywhere now.

Sharp.

Bright.

Unforgiving.

He slipped the photograph from his pocket.

*Remember this.*

He stared at it for a moment.

Then placed it on the conference table beside the old contracts.

Adrian noticed.

"Why bring it here?"

Alex shrugged.

"Because it belongs with the rest of the past."

Elena closed the final folder.

"Victor's meeting request just arrived."

Alex turned.

"That was fast."

Adrian asked quietly,

"When?"

Elena checked the tablet.

"Eight o'clock."

Alex smiled slowly.

"Well."

Adrian waited.

Alex glanced at the photograph.

Then at the documents.

Then at Adrian.

"I guess we finally get to see what Victor remembers."
