Chapter 36 - Chapter 36 — The First Crack in the Armor

Alex woke earlier than usual.

The city was still gray outside the window. Morning light hadn't fully reached the towers yet.

For a moment he lay still, staring at the ceiling.

The meeting with Victor replayed in his head.

The folder.

The investors.

The moment Victor realized the story could destroy him.

Alex exhaled slowly.

"That was fun," he muttered.

He sat up and ran a hand through his hair.

Something felt different.

Not wrong.

Just… different.

The war had shifted.

Victor wasn't attacking anymore.

Which meant he was planning something else.

Alex slipped out of bed and walked into the living room.

The smell of coffee reached him before the kitchen came into view.

Of course.

Adrian stood at the counter, already dressed for the day.

Perfect posture.

Calm expression.

Coffee in hand.

Alex leaned against the doorway.

"You really hate sleeping."

Adrian looked up.

"Morning."

Alex walked into the kitchen.

"Morning."

He took the cup Adrian offered without asking.

That had become normal now.

Alex took a sip.

"You know what I realized last night?"

Adrian waited.

"The war didn't end."

"No."

Alex nodded.

"But something changed."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex leaned against the counter.

"Victor isn't attacking anymore."

Adrian watched him.

"He's repositioning."

Alex smiled faintly.

"Exactly."

Adrian took a sip of coffee.

Alex continued.

"He expected you to fight him."

"Yes."

"And now you're not."

"Yes."

Alex nodded slowly.

"That's why he looked uncomfortable."

Adrian set his cup down.

"Victor prefers predictable enemies."

Alex laughed softly.

"Well."

"You've definitely ruined that."

Adrian didn't respond.

Alex glanced at him.

"You're thinking again."

"Yes."

"That usually means trouble."

"Yes."

Alex sighed.

"I knew it."

He drank the rest of the coffee and set the cup down.

"So what's the next move?"

Adrian walked toward the window.

"For now…"

He looked out over the city.

"…nothing."

Alex blinked.

"Nothing?"

"Yes."

Alex crossed his arms.

"That sounds suspicious."

"It's strategic."

Alex shook his head slowly.

"That word again."

Adrian didn't reply.

Alex watched him for a moment.

"You're waiting."

"Yes."

"For Victor to make a mistake."

"Yes."

Alex nodded slowly.

"That's actually smart."

Adrian glanced back at him.

"You're surprised."

Alex shrugged.

"I'm used to you being aggressively smart."

Adrian almost smiled.

Alex caught it.

"There."

"What?"

"That expression again."

Adrian looked away.

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

Alex laughed quietly.

"You're terrible at hiding things."

Adrian ignored that.

Alex walked to the window beside him.

The city stretched endlessly below.

"Do you know what Victor is doing right now?" Alex asked.

Adrian said calmly,

"Rebuilding leverage."

Alex nodded.

"Exactly."

"And he'll find it."

"Yes."

Alex leaned his shoulder against the glass.

"Which means round two is coming."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex glanced at him.

"You're calm about that."

"Yes."

Alex shook his head slowly.

"You really are ruthless."

Adrian didn't deny it.

The silence between them grew heavier.

Alex felt it again.

That strange tension that had nothing to do with Victor.

He pushed away from the window.

"You know what's bothering me more than Victor?"

Adrian looked at him.

"What?"

Alex rubbed his neck.

"This."

He gestured between them.

Adrian's expression didn't change.

Alex continued.

"You trusted me yesterday."

"Yes."

Alex frowned slightly.

"That's still weird."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex paced once across the living room.

"You built an empire by trusting nobody."

"Yes."

"And suddenly I'm giving advice in billion-dollar negotiations."

"Yes."

Alex turned back toward him.

"That's not normal."

Adrian's voice stayed calm.

"No."

Alex folded his arms.

"So why are you doing it?"

The question sat in the room.

Heavy.

Real.

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Alex waited.

The city lights reflected faintly across the glass.

Finally Adrian said,

"Because you see things differently."

Alex frowned.

"That's vague."

Adrian continued.

"You see people."

Alex blinked.

"Well."

"That sounded almost like a compliment."

"It was."

Alex stared at him.

"You're getting reckless with honesty."

Adrian didn't respond.

Alex shook his head slowly.

"You know Victor would love this conversation."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

Alex smiled faintly.

"Because it proves his theory."

Adrian's voice remained calm.

"He's wrong."

Alex shrugged.

"Maybe."

Adrian studied him carefully.

"You think he's right."

Alex hesitated.

That was the dangerous part.

Finally he said,

"I think you're not the same man he fought twenty years ago."

Silence.

Adrian didn't move.

Alex continued quietly.

"People change."

Adrian answered calmly.

"No."

Alex tilted his head.

"You're very confident about that."

"Yes."

Alex walked closer.

The space between them felt smaller now.

"You asked my opinion yesterday," Alex said.

"Yes."

"You followed it."

"Yes."

Alex nodded slowly.

"That's change."

Adrian held his gaze.

"No."

Alex smiled faintly.

"Denial is a beautiful thing."

Adrian didn't respond.

The tension in the room grew thicker.

Alex finally stepped back.

"Relax."

Adrian waited.

"I'm not accusing you of becoming emotional."

Adrian's voice stayed level.

"Good."

Alex laughed softly.

"Just slightly less terrifying."

Adrian almost smiled again.

Alex saw it.

"There."

"What?"

"That face."

Adrian looked away again.

"No."

"Yes."

Alex shook his head.

"You're really bad at this."

The elevator chimed suddenly.

Both men turned.

The doors opened.

Elena stepped into the penthouse carrying her tablet.

She stopped when she saw them standing near the window.

"Am I interrupting something?"

Alex shrugged.

"Probably."

Elena walked closer.

"We have an update."

Adrian looked at her.

"Victor?"

"Yes."

Alex crossed his arms.

"That didn't take long."

Elena tapped the tablet.

"He moved money overnight."

Alex frowned.

"That's never good."

Elena turned the screen toward them.

A series of financial transfers appeared.

Huge numbers.

Offshore accounts.

Investment funds.

Alex whistled quietly.

"That's a lot of money."

Elena nodded.

"He's consolidating."

Adrian's eyes sharpened slightly.

"For what?"

Elena met his gaze.

"A takeover."

Silence.

Alex blinked.

"Wait."

He looked between them.

"A takeover of what?"

Elena answered calmly.

"Laurent International."

The room froze.

Alex stared at the screen.

"Well."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex rubbed his face slowly.

"That's… ambitious."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Alex looked at Adrian.

"Your enemy just decided to buy your company."

Adrian's voice remained calm.

"Yes."

Alex exhaled slowly.

"Well."

Adrian looked at him.

"Well what?"

Alex smiled faintly.

"Round two just got interesting."
