Chapter 41 - Chapter 41 — The Public War

By evening the news had spread everywhere.

Alex stood in the penthouse living room watching the city through the glass walls while Elena's tablet scrolled endlessly with headlines.

Laurent International.

Victor Moreau.

Meridian Shipping Alliance.

Takeover attempt.

Financial war.

Every major business channel was talking about it now.

Alex exhaled slowly.

"Well."

Adrian stood beside the window, hands resting loosely in his pockets.

"Yes."

Alex glanced at him.

"You're famous again."

Adrian didn't answer.

Elena looked up from the tablet.

"This isn't good publicity."

Alex shrugged.

"It's great publicity."

Elena frowned slightly.

"Explain."

Alex walked toward the kitchen and poured water.

"Victor wanted the war quiet."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Alex drank and leaned against the counter.

"Now it's everywhere."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex continued.

"That means every investor is watching."

Elena thought about it.

"That increases pressure."

Alex smiled faintly.

"Exactly."

Adrian turned slightly toward them.

"Pressure works both ways."

Alex nodded.

"Yes."

Elena tapped the tablet again.

"The alliance just released a statement."

Alex raised an eyebrow.

"That was fast."

Elena turned the screen toward them.

The headline filled the display.

MERIDIAN ALLIANCE SUPPORTS STABILITY IN GLOBAL SHIPPING

Alex read the statement.

Then he laughed quietly.

"That's corporate language for 'we're still backing Victor.'"

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian remained calm.

Alex crossed his arms.

"You expected that."

"Yes."

Alex leaned back against the counter.

"You really are patient."

Adrian didn't respond.

Alex studied him.

"You're waiting for something specific."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex smiled faintly.

"There it is again."

Adrian glanced at him.

"What?"

"That look."

Adrian looked away.

"No."

"Yes."

Elena ignored them.

"The alliance investors will meet tomorrow morning."

Alex frowned.

"Why?"

Elena tapped the screen again.

"They're reviewing their exposure."

Alex smiled slowly.

"There it is."

Adrian watched him.

"What?"

Alex nodded toward the tablet.

"They're nervous."

Elena nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Alex leaned forward slightly.

"That's what we wanted."

Adrian said quietly,

"It's only the first crack."

Alex shrugged.

"Cracks spread."

The room fell silent for a moment.

The city lights reflected across the windows.

Traffic moved slowly far below.

Alex looked back toward the screen.

"You know what Victor will do now."

Adrian waited.

"He'll go public."

Elena looked at him.

"You think so?"

Alex nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian asked calmly,

"Why?"

Alex shrugged.

"He needs momentum."

Elena nodded slowly.

"That makes sense."

Alex leaned back again.

"He'll try to look confident."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex continued.

"Probably a press conference."

Elena checked the tablet again.

Alex watched her expression change.

"Well," he said.

Elena turned the screen toward them.

"Already scheduled."

Alex blinked.

"That was fast."

Adrian read the headline.

VICTOR MOREAU TO ADDRESS GLOBAL SHIPPING FUTURE

Alex laughed softly.

"That's not subtle."

Elena crossed her arms.

"He's moving quickly."

Alex nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian looked back at the city.

"He wants control of the narrative."

Alex smiled faintly.

"Too late."

Elena frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Alex gestured toward the tablet.

"People already know there's a war."

Adrian said quietly,

"Yes."

Alex continued.

"And wars make investors nervous."

Elena nodded.

"They do."

Alex leaned against the counter.

"So Victor can talk all he wants."

He shrugged.

"But the doubt is already there."

Adrian didn't respond.

Alex studied him carefully.

"You're not worried."

Adrian answered calmly.

"No."

Alex smiled faintly.

"That's terrifying."

Elena's tablet vibrated again.

She checked the screen.

Then she froze.

Alex noticed immediately.

"That's a new reaction."

Elena turned the screen slowly.

"Victor just announced something else."

Alex leaned forward.

"What now?"

Elena spoke quietly.

"He's offering to buy out the shareholders directly."

The room went still.

Alex blinked.

"Wait."

Elena scrolled the article.

"A premium offer."

Alex rubbed his face slowly.

"That's aggressive."

Adrian remained calm.

"Yes."

Elena looked at him.

"That could shift the board."

Alex nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Adrian walked back toward the table.

"How high?"

Elena checked the numbers.

"Twenty percent above market."

Alex whistled softly.

"That's expensive."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex looked at him.

"You're still calm."

"Yes."

Alex laughed quietly.

"You're insane."

Adrian ignored the comment.

Elena continued reading the article.

"He's framing it as 'protecting the company from instability.'"

Alex smiled faintly.

"That's clever."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex leaned forward again.

"But it won't work."

Elena frowned.

"Why not?"

Alex tapped the table lightly.

"Because he moved too fast."

Adrian glanced at him.

"Explain."

Alex shrugged.

"Shareholders like profit."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Alex continued.

"But they like safety more."

Adrian said quietly,

"Yes."

Alex smiled.

"So when someone suddenly offers twenty percent above market…"

He spread his hands.

"They start asking why."

Elena nodded slowly.

"That's true."

Alex leaned back.

"And the answer is war."

Adrian didn't respond.

Elena checked the screen again.

"Markets are reacting."

Alex looked at the chart.

The stock price was climbing rapidly.

"Well," he said.

Adrian waited.

"That's messy."

Adrian nodded once.

"Yes."

Elena frowned.

"The price increase actually helps Victor."

Alex shook his head.

"No."

Both of them looked at him.

Alex smiled faintly.

"Now the company is worth even more."

Adrian's eyes moved slightly.

Elena understood a second later.

"That makes the takeover more expensive."

Alex nodded.

"Exactly."

Adrian almost smiled.

Alex saw it.

"There."

Adrian looked away again.

"No."

"Yes."

Alex shook his head.

"You're terrible at hiding victory."

Elena ignored them.

"The board will call an emergency meeting tonight."

Alex frowned.

"That's fast."

Elena nodded.

"Yes."

Alex looked at Adrian.

"You'll be there."

"Yes."

Alex sighed.

"Of course."

Adrian studied him.

"You don't have to come."

Alex laughed softly.

"That's adorable."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"No?"

"No."

Alex crossed his arms.

"This war became public today."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex continued.

"So now I'm curious."

Adrian asked quietly,

"About what?"

Alex smiled faintly.

"What Victor does when the whole world is watching."

The room grew quiet again.

Outside the windows, the city lights reflected across the river.

Inside the penthouse, the war had moved into the open.

Victor had escalated.

The alliance had chosen sides.

And now the board would decide the next move.

Alex looked back at Adrian.

"Well," he said softly.

"Let's go see how confident Victor really is."
