Chapter 42 - Chapter 42 — The Boardroom

The boardroom was colder than Alex expected.

Not the temperature.

The atmosphere.

Glass walls.

Long black table.

Screens glowing softly along one side of the room.

And twelve people sitting quietly in expensive chairs pretending they were calm.

Alex stood near the doorway with Adrian and Elena as the last members of the board arrived.

Everyone was already watching the news.

Victor's takeover announcement had spread across every financial channel in the city.

Alex glanced at the screen on the wall.

Victor's face filled the display.

Perfect posture.

Calm voice.

Confidence.

"Impressive," Alex muttered.

Adrian didn't respond.

Elena leaned closer.

"He's controlling the narrative."

Alex nodded.

"For now."

One of the board members stood.

Richard Halpern.

He looked directly at Adrian.

"Let's begin."

Everyone took their seats.

Alex remained standing for a moment before sliding into the chair beside Adrian.

Halpern placed a tablet on the table.

"Victor Moreau has made a formal acquisition offer."

Alex leaned back.

"That was quick."

Halpern ignored him.

"Elena."

She tapped her tablet.

The monitors lit up.

Victor's offer appeared on the screens.

Alex studied the numbers.

"Well."

Adrian asked quietly,

"How much?"

Elena answered calmly.

"Thirty percent above current valuation."

Several board members shifted in their seats.

Alex whistled softly.

"That's generous."

Halpern folded his hands.

"It's aggressive."

Adrian remained calm.

"Yes."

Halpern looked directly at him.

"What's your response?"

Adrian said nothing for a moment.

Alex watched the room.

Every board member was studying Adrian.

Waiting.

Adrian finally spoke.

"No."

The room stayed quiet.

Halpern raised an eyebrow.

"That's your entire response."

"Yes."

Alex smiled faintly.

"That's very Adrian."

Another board member leaned forward.

"Victor's offer is attractive."

Alex shrugged.

"So is setting money on fire."

The man frowned.

Halpern ignored the interruption.

"Victor now owns seven percent of the company."

Adrian nodded once.

"Yes."

Halpern continued.

"And the Meridian Alliance supports him."

Alex leaned forward slightly.

"That alliance is nervous."

Halpern looked at him.

"You're confident."

Alex shrugged.

"They should be."

Halpern tapped the table lightly.

"This isn't a game."

Alex smiled faintly.

"It's always a game."

Adrian said quietly,

"Enough."

The room went silent again.

Halpern looked at Adrian.

"You're rejecting the offer."

"Yes."

Halpern leaned back in his chair.

"Victor anticipated that."

Alex laughed softly.

"I'm sure he did."

Another board member spoke.

"He's planning a shareholder vote."

Alex nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Halpern turned toward Adrian.

"If he gains enough support…"

Adrian finished the sentence.

"He takes control."

Alex leaned back again.

"That would be inconvenient."

Halpern looked at him.

"You seem remarkably calm."

Alex shrugged.

"I'm learning from the best."

Adrian didn't respond.

Elena spoke again.

"The alliance has already started contacting shareholders."

The room shifted slightly.

Halpern frowned.

"That's fast."

Alex nodded.

"Victor doesn't waste time."

Adrian said nothing.

Halpern folded his hands again.

"So what's the strategy?"

The room waited.

Adrian remained silent.

Alex looked at him.

"You're not going to answer."

Adrian said quietly,

"No."

Halpern frowned.

"This is the board."

Adrian looked at him calmly.

"Yes."

Alex smiled faintly.

"That's your clue."

Halpern studied Adrian for several seconds.

"You already have a plan."

Adrian didn't deny it.

Alex leaned forward slightly.

"You know what Victor forgot."

Several board members looked at him.

Halpern raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

Alex gestured toward the screen.

"He thinks buying shares gives him control."

Halpern said nothing.

Alex continued.

"But companies aren't controlled by numbers."

One of the board members frowned.

"They absolutely are."

Alex shook his head.

"No."

Halpern asked quietly,

"Then what controls them?"

Alex smiled faintly.

"Confidence."

The room grew quiet again.

Halpern leaned forward slightly.

"Explain."

Alex shrugged.

"Victor just turned a private disagreement into a public war."

Adrian said nothing.

Alex continued.

"That makes every investor nervous."

Halpern nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Alex leaned back.

"And nervous investors do one thing."

Halpern asked,

"What?"

Alex smiled.

"They wait."

Elena nodded slightly.

"That slows the takeover."

Alex pointed toward the screen.

"And every day it slows…"

He spread his hands.

"…Victor's offer becomes more expensive."

Adrian almost smiled again.

Alex saw it.

"There."

Adrian looked away.

"No."

"Yes."

Halpern ignored them.

"So your strategy is delay."

Adrian said calmly,

"Yes."

Alex leaned back again.

"Time is expensive in wars."

Halpern studied Adrian carefully.

"You're confident Victor will run out of money."

Adrian didn't respond.

Alex answered instead.

"He'll run out of patience first."

The room fell silent again.

Then the door opened.

Everyone turned.

Elena frowned.

"That's unexpected."

Victor Moreau stepped into the boardroom.

Calm.

Perfect suit.

Completely confident.

Alex blinked.

"Well."

Victor looked around the room.

"Good evening."

Halpern stood.

"This is a private meeting."

Victor smiled faintly.

"I'm a shareholder."

The room froze.

Alex leaned back slowly.

"That's technically true."

Victor walked toward the table.

He stopped beside the screen displaying his offer.

"I thought it would be useful to speak directly."

No one responded.

Victor looked at Adrian.

"You've rejected my offer."

Adrian remained calm.

"Yes."

Victor nodded slowly.

"I expected that."

Alex crossed his arms.

"Of course you did."

Victor ignored him.

His eyes stayed locked on Adrian.

"You're forcing a vote."

Adrian said nothing.

Victor smiled faintly.

"That's good."

Alex raised an eyebrow.

"That's not the usual reaction."

Victor looked at him.

"You're assuming I'm worried."

Alex shrugged.

"You should be."

Victor turned back toward Adrian.

"I'm giving the shareholders something simple."

Halpern frowned.

"What?"

Victor answered calmly.

"A choice."

The room went still.

Alex leaned forward slightly.

"That sounds dangerous."

Victor smiled faintly.

"Yes."

He tapped the screen showing his offer.

"They can choose stability."

Alex laughed softly.

"That's a creative description."

Victor ignored him.

His attention stayed on Adrian.

"Or they can choose uncertainty."

Adrian said nothing.

Victor's voice lowered slightly.

"And uncertainty is expensive."

The room remained silent.

Victor finally stepped away from the screen.

"I look forward to the vote."

He turned toward the door.

Before leaving, he glanced at Alex.

"You're enjoying this."

Alex smiled faintly.

"I like good strategy."

Victor nodded once.

"So do I."

Then he left.

The door closed softly behind him.

The boardroom remained silent.

Alex leaned back slowly.

"Well."

Adrian looked at him.

"Well what?"

Alex rubbed his face.

"That was dramatic."

Halpern looked at Adrian.

"He's confident."

Adrian said quietly,

"Yes."

Alex smiled faintly.

"That's the best part."

Adrian asked,

"What?"

Alex glanced toward the closed door.

"Confident men make the most expensive mistakes."
