Chapter 66 - The Storm Breaks

The wall of the Lockwood estate was still splintered open, cold night air rushing through the gap where Klaus had been thrown.

Dust and bits of plaster drifted slowly to the floor.

For a heartbeat, nobody moved.

Then Klaus stepped out of the rubble, brushing broken wood from his jacket as if the violent impact had been nothing more than an inconvenience.

Blood glistened faintly at the corner of his mouth.

He touched it with two fingers, looked at the red smear, and smiled.

Not anger.

Not humiliation.

Excitement.

"Well," Klaus said, his voice low and almost delighted, "now this is interesting."

Alexander stood between Klaus and the others, shoulders relaxed, expression unreadable.

But the room had changed.

Everyone felt it.

The detached stillness that usually surrounded him was gone.

In its place was something sharper.

Intent.

Behind him, Elena's pulse was still racing. She glanced toward Caroline, who remained tied to the chair near the fireplace.

Bonnie moved subtly closer to Elena, her fingers already tingling with magic.

Stefan took one step to the side, instinctively positioning himself for a fight.

Damon, on the other hand, actually looked impressed.

"I'll admit," he muttered, eyes still on the shattered wall, "that entrance into the fight was worth the wait."

Stefan shot him a look.

Damon shrugged. "What? It was."

Klaus ignored them all.

His gaze never left Alexander.

"You've been hiding behind silence and mystery for weeks," Klaus said, walking forward slowly. "And now suddenly you choose to show your hand."

Alexander's voice was calm, but there was steel beneath it.

"You forced the wrong move."

Klaus chuckled.

"No," he said. "I forced the only move that mattered."

Then he moved.

This time, everyone saw it.

A blur of vampire speed crossed the room.

But Alexander met him head-on.

The collision sent a shock through the floorboards.

The wooden table in the center of the room cracked down the middle.

Klaus drove a fist toward Alexander's jaw.

Alexander caught it.

Not barely.

Effortlessly.

Klaus's expression shifted for the first time.

Surprise.

Then Alexander drove his knee into Klaus's stomach and sent him crashing backward into the staircase.

The railing snapped apart.

Caroline stared wide-eyed.

"Okay," she said breathlessly, "that was definitely hotter than Damon."

Damon looked offended. "Rude."

Even in the middle of the chaos, Caroline managed a weak smirk.

That was enough for Elena.

"Bonnie, get Caroline."

Bonnie nodded and rushed forward, crouching beside her friend.

Her fingers glowed faintly as she worked the bindings loose.

Meanwhile, Klaus rose again, faster this time.

He lunged low, forcing Alexander back through the doorway and out into the estate grounds.

The others followed.

Outside, the storm had finally broken.

Rain lashed across the grounds, thunder rolling above the treeline.

The moon flashed in and out behind racing clouds.

Klaus stood in the center of the courtyard, rain dripping from his hair, his expression darker now.

"This is what I wanted," he said.

Alexander said nothing.

Klaus spread his arms slightly.

"Do you know how long it has been since I found something I could not immediately understand?"

A pause.

"Centuries."

Lightning split across the sky.

Klaus rushed forward again.

This time the fight was brutal.

No restraint.

No games.

Fists met bone.

The ground cracked beneath them.

Alexander took Klaus's blow to the ribs, twisted, and slammed him against a stone pillar hard enough to shatter it.

Klaus retaliated with a savage strike across Alexander's face.

For the first time, Elena saw Alexander stagger.

Only one step.

But enough to make her chest tighten.

Klaus noticed too.

And smiled.

"There," he said. "So you can bleed."

A thin line of blood traced Alexander's lower lip.

He touched it once, looking at the crimson on his fingers.

Then his eyes lifted.

Something changed.

Not rage.

Something colder.

Older.

The rain around him seemed to still for half a second.

Bonnie felt it instantly.

Her breath caught.

"What is that?" she whispered.

Even her magic reacted strangely, pulling back like it had before.

Klaus's smile faded.

Alexander stepped forward.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

"You wanted limits," he said quietly.

His voice carried through the storm.

"Now you'll understand why they exist."

Before Klaus could react, Alexander was in front of him.

Not vampire speed.

Something else.

Faster.

His hand closed around Klaus's throat and lifted him off the ground.

Klaus's eyes widened.

For the first time that night—

For the first time in a very long time—

fear flickered across the Original's face.

Stefan stared in disbelief.

Damon actually let out a low whistle.

"Okay. Definitely not normal vampire rules."

Alexander's voice remained quiet.

"You threaten the town."

His grip tightened.

"You use Elena."

Klaus struggled, trying to pry the hand from his throat.

It didn't move.

"You touch those under my watch."

The last words came colder than the storm.

And then Alexander threw him.

Not across the yard.

Through it.

Klaus's body tore through two stone statues before crashing into the iron gates at the edge of the estate.

The metal bent inward with the force.

Silence.

Even the rain seemed quieter.

Then applause broke the moment.

Slow.

Measured.

Everyone turned.

Under the covered entrance of the estate stood Elijah Mikaelson.

Immaculate suit.

Calm expression.

Hands lightly clasped.

"Well," Elijah said, looking at the ruined courtyard, "this has escalated rather dramatically."

Damon groaned. "Great. The classy one's here."

Elijah's gaze moved to Alexander, and unlike Klaus, there was no arrogance in it.

Only careful calculation.

"You are stronger than expected," Elijah said.

Alexander looked at him.

"I'm not your enemy."

Before Elijah could respond, Klaus pulled himself from the twisted gate, breathing harder now, blood running from his temple.

His smile was gone.

In its place was fury.

"Elijah," Klaus said sharply, "stand aside."

But Elijah didn't move.

Instead, he looked at his brother.

"No."

That single word hit harder than the thunder.

Klaus's eyes narrowed.

Elijah stepped forward into the rain.

"This has gone far enough," he said calmly. "You wanted answers. Instead, you've brought war to Mystic Falls."

Klaus's voice dropped into a dangerous growl.

"He attacked me."

Elijah looked at the shattered courtyard, the broken pillars, Caroline newly freed beside Bonnie, Elena standing close to Stefan.

Then he looked back at Klaus.

"You took a hostage."

Damon snorted. "Finally, someone said it."

For a long moment, the brothers stared at one another.

Then Elijah turned to Alexander.

"This ends tonight."

Klaus laughed bitterly.

"You think he'll simply walk away?"

Alexander finally spoke.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

His gaze shifted to Elena, then to the town beyond the estate.

"Klaus won't stop."

The words settled heavily in the storm.

Because everyone knew he was right.

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

Klaus wiped the blood from his mouth, his expression now colder than before.

"Then let's make this simple," he said.

His eyes locked onto Elena.

"At the full moon tomorrow night, I take what I came for."

Silence.

Elena's breath caught.

The sacrifice.

The ritual.

The main storyline had finally arrived in full.

Klaus stepped backward toward the darkness beyond the gates.

"And if anyone interferes," he said, eyes flicking to Alexander, "Mystic Falls burns."

Then he disappeared into the storm.

Thunder rolled above them.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Finally, Stefan turned to Elena.

"We need to move. Now."

Bonnie nodded grimly.

"The moon ritual. He's out of time."

Damon exhaled sharply. "Fantastic. So tomorrow we either stop an Original hybrid ritual or die trying."

Alexander looked toward the dark woods where Klaus had vanished.

His expression had gone still again.

But this time it was different.

Not detached.

Focused.

The war had finally become open.

And tomorrow night—

everything would change.
