By the time they returned to the Boarding House, the storm had followed them across Mystic Falls.
Rain hammered against the windows in restless waves, and every flash of lightning made the old walls seem more fragile than they really were.
Inside, no one bothered pretending this was just another crisis.
This was war.
Elena stood near the fireplace, arms folded tightly across herself, trying to steady the unease rising in her chest. Klaus's words still echoed in her mind.
At the full moon tomorrow night, I take what I came for.
The ritual.
Her blood.
Her life.
Stefan moved first, practical as always. He spread a map of Mystic Falls and the surrounding woods across the center table.
"We need to assume he already has the ritual site prepared," he said. "He won't wait until the last minute."
Damon poured himself a drink, then looked at the map with visible annoyance.
"Great. So we get to go hunt down the homicidal immortal hybrid before moonrise. Just another Wednesday."
Bonnie, standing near the staircase with Caroline beside her, looked pale but focused.
"It won't just be Klaus," Bonnie said quietly. "He'll have witches."
That pulled everyone's attention toward her.
She swallowed once before continuing.
"I felt it when we were at the Lockwood estate. There was magic in the air—not mine, not anything from the Bennett line. Something older. Darker."
Damon muttered, "Fantastic. Murder ritual plus witch support."
Caroline, now free but still visibly shaken, sat down heavily on the couch.
"I'm fine, by the way," she said, then gave Damon a look. "Before anyone asks."
Damon raised his glass slightly. "You're tied to a chair by an Original for half the night and that's the energy you bring back?"
Caroline glared. "It's called coping."
For the first time since leaving the estate, Elena let out the smallest breath of something close to a laugh.
It didn't last.
Because Alexander was standing near the window, looking out into the storm, silent.
Elena turned toward him.
"You knew he'd move to the ritual."
It wasn't really a question.
Alexander looked back at her, his expression calm.
"Yes."
Stefan's jaw tightened. "Then tell us where."
A pause.
Then Alexander walked to the table and placed one hand on the map.
His finger came to rest near the old Fell Church ruins at the edge of the woods.
"The original site," he said.
Bonnie's eyes widened slightly.
"That makes sense," she murmured. "It's old enough to hold the kind of magic he needs."
Damon looked between them.
"Okay, great. We have a location. Now we need a way to kill the unkillable psycho."
Before anyone could answer, the front door opened.
Every head turned.
Elijah Mikaelson stepped inside.
Rainwater glistened on his coat, but his posture was as composed as ever.
Stefan moved instantly in front of Elena.
"You've got a lot of nerve showing up here."
Elijah met his stare evenly.
"I'm not here as an enemy."
Damon let out a dry laugh.
"That's exactly what enemies say."
Elijah ignored him and looked directly at Elena.
"My brother has gone too far."
Silence settled over the room.
Caroline scoffed. "A little late for moral clarity, don't you think?"
For the first time, something like regret passed over Elijah's face.
"My loyalty to Niklaus has limits."
Damon smirked.
"Well, look at that. The classy Original finally found one."
Elijah turned to Alexander.
"You were right. He will not stop on his own."
Alexander gave a slight nod.
That was all the acknowledgment Elijah seemed to need.
He stepped closer to the table.
"I know where the ritual will begin," Elijah said. "And I know the sequence."
Bonnie moved closer immediately.
"What sequence?"
Elijah's expression darkened.
"The werewolf sacrifice first. Then the vampire. Finally the doppelgänger blood to complete the curse-breaking ritual."
Caroline's face paled.
Tyler.
Elena noticed it instantly.
"Tyler," she said softly.
Caroline looked up, eyes wide.
"He's going to use Tyler."
The room tightened around that realization.
Stefan swore under his breath.
Damon set his drink down harder than necessary.
"So now we're saving Elena and Tyler. Perfect."
Bonnie looked at Elijah carefully.
"And why should we trust you?"
Elijah met her gaze without flinching.
"Because if Niklaus succeeds, there will be nothing left to restrain him."
That answer rang too true to ignore.
Still, the room remained uneasy.
Then another voice came from the doorway.
"Well… this is a charming little family meeting."
Katherine.
She stepped inside with rain in her hair and that familiar, dangerous smile.
Damon groaned.
"Oh, good. Now the chaos is complete."
Katherine ignored him and looked straight at Elena.
"You're welcome, by the way."
Elena frowned. "For what?"
Katherine smiled slowly.
"For buying you time."
Stefan stared at her.
"What did you do?"
Katherine leaned against the doorway, clearly enjoying the moment.
"I paid Klaus a visit after he left the estate. Told him the Salvatores would never be stupid enough to stay in one place." She shrugged. "He spent half the night chasing ghosts near the old Lockwood cellar."
Damon's eyes narrowed.
"You're helping us?"
Katherine's smile sharpened.
"I'm helping myself. There's a difference."
That, at least, sounded honest.
Bonnie looked between Elijah and Katherine.
"This is insane."
"No," Damon said, glancing at the two oldest vampires in the room, "this is Mystic Falls."
Elena stepped closer to the table, forcing herself to focus.
"So what's the plan?"
This time, everyone looked at Alexander.
Not because they had to.
Because they knew this had moved beyond normal strategy.
He studied the map for a moment before speaking.
"Stefan and Damon free Tyler before moonrise."
He looked at Bonnie.
"You disrupt the ritual circle before Klaus can begin the blood sequence."
Then his gaze shifted to Elena.
"You stay with Elijah."
Elena frowned immediately.
"No."
The word came out faster than she expected.
Everyone looked at her.
"I'm done being moved around like a piece on a board," she said, voice steady but firm. "This is about me. I'm not sitting in the background while everyone risks their lives."
A brief silence followed.
Then, surprisingly, Alexander nodded.
"Then you stay with me."
That answer hit the room harder than anyone expected.
Stefan stepped forward instantly.
"Absolutely not."
Damon muttered, "Actually, that might be the safest option."
Stefan shot him a look.
But Elena didn't take her eyes off Alexander.
"Can you stop him?"
A pause.
Then—
"Yes."
No hesitation.
No detached ambiguity.
Just certainty.
For the first time in several chapters, something inside Elena steadied.
Not trust.
Not completely.
But direction.
Outside, thunder rolled again.
The full moon was less than a day away.
And somewhere beyond the storm-dark woods, Klaus was preparing the ritual that would change everything.
Later that night, as the house finally grew quieter, Katherine stood alone on the porch.
She heard him before she saw him.
Alexander stepped out into the rain.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Katherine smiled faintly.
"You really think this ends tomorrow?"
Alexander's gaze remained on the woods.
"No."
Her smile widened.
"Good. Because Klaus isn't the only problem coming."
That made him look at her.
For the first time, there was something less playful in Katherine's eyes.
Something serious.
"There's another force moving toward Mystic Falls," she said quietly. "Older than Klaus's ambition. Older than his curse."
A pause.
"And it's coming for you."
Lightning split the sky.
Alexander's expression didn't change.
But the air around him did.
Focused.
Cold.
Interested.
The real game, it seemed, was only beginning.
