Chapter 10 - Apex Predator

The bear did not hesitate.

The roar that tore from its throat rolled through the frozen forest like an avalanche breaking loose from a mountainside. Frost fell from the surrounding branches in a glittering cascade as the sound echoed through the trees, the shockwave of it rattling the ice crystals that coated the forest like fragile glass.

For a moment the entire landscape seemed to inhale.

Then the bear moved.

Its massive body surged forward with terrifying acceleration, claws tearing deep trenches through the snow as several tons of muscle and bone launched itself across the frozen ground. The monster's fur bristled as it ran, each movement shedding tiny shards of ice that glittered in the pale blue light reflecting off the snow.

Those crystals did not fall harmlessly to the ground.

The bear swung its paw.

The motion shattered the frozen particles embedded in its fur, sending them screaming through the air in a cone of razor-edged ice. The attack looked almost beautiful for a fraction of a second, a glittering arc of frost spreading outward through the cold air like a burst of diamond dust.

Then the shards struck.

Several of them struck with enough force to crack bone before the suit hardened beneath the impact. A thin sting of pain followed each contact, sharp and quick as the fragments glanced off the armor plating beneath the material.

In the corner of my vision the interface flickered.

The bear's paw slammed into my chest a moment later.

For a fraction of a second the world became weight.

The bear's massive paw and its deadly claws would have torn straight through my side, the force alone enough to shatter most of the bones in my body.

But I wasn't standing still.

Momentum answered to me as I stepped into the attack.

The argument ended instantly.

The bear's charge unraveled as the force of the collision bent sharply under my control. Several thousand pounds of muscle and bone skidded sideways across the frozen ground in a spray of snow and ice. The creature slid several meters before its back slammed into a pine tree thick enough to support the weight of a small car.

The trunk exploded into splinters.

The bear barely slowed, smashing through multiple trees and toppling a section of the frozen forest.

I stepped forward through the drifting cloud of shattered wood and snow, my boots biting into the frozen earth as pressure gathered beneath my feet once again. The sensation returned immediately—that subtle shift in the world that came whenever my ability awakened.

Resistance disappeared.

The bear shook itself violently as it recovered from the collision. Ice crystals burst outward from its fur in a glittering cloud as it reoriented, its massive head swinging toward me with a low rumbling growl that vibrated through the frozen air.

It understood something now.

The first two charges had failed.

So it adapted.

The monster slammed its forepaws into the ground.

The impact sent a wave of frost racing outward through the snow, freezing the surface beneath us into ice smooth as glass. The frozen river nearby groaned in response, thin cracks spreading outward beneath the surface as the sudden temperature shift tightened the already fragile ice.

The bear attacked again.

This time it did not run.

It slid.

Its paws froze the surface beneath them the instant they touched the ground, eliminating friction completely as the creature launched itself forward like a living avalanche. Snow exploded outward in twin plumes behind it as the monster accelerated far faster than its size should have allowed.

I was already moving.

Force gathered beneath my steps as my stride lengthened automatically, the direction of my motion locking into place with quiet certainty. The bear's shoulder collided with me an instant later, the blow hammering into my shoulder as I lowered it for impact before the ability inside my body seized control of the collision.

Pain flashed.

Then vanished.

For a brief moment the sheer mass behind the impact pushed back harder than anything I had felt before. The strain spiked through my body as the creature's charge tried to overwhelm me.

Then the force folded.

The bear's attack collapsed sideways as the energy of its charge spilled into a new direction. The creature skidded across the frozen river, claws scraping furiously against the ice as it struggled to regain control of its own motion.

The system chimed quietly in my vision.

Seven already.

The number lingered for a moment before fading.

I exhaled slowly while watching the bear recover.

The monster was stronger than anything I had fought before, but its attacks still followed predictable patterns. Every charge relied on overwhelming force, every swipe designed to crush prey beneath sheer physical power.

That approach worked on most creatures.

Unfortunately for the bear, physics and I had come to an understanding.

The monster roared again.

Its fur bristled violently as the ice crystals embedded in its coat hardened, each shard lengthening into jagged spikes of frost that glittered in the pale light like glass daggers.

Then the bear shook itself.

The crystals launched outward.

A ring of frozen projectiles tore through the air in every direction, hundreds of razor-edged shards slicing through the drifting snow like a storm of thrown knives.

I stepped forward.

Energy surged through my movement.

The first wave struck.

Ice fragments shattered against the suit as I twisted slightly, guiding most of the incoming shards past my body and into the frozen ground beside me. The remaining fragments cracked harmlessly against the hardened armor plates across my torso and shoulders, each impact sending a faint pulse of energy crawling through the suit's internal systems.

The interface flickered again.

The bear charged again before I had a chance to think about it further.

This time I didn't meet the attack head-on.

Instead I shifted my stance slightly as the beast and I closed the distance.

The moment of collision came.

A fraction of a second before the bear's shoulder could hammer into me again, I twisted and drove an uppercut into its jaw.

The force of its charge collapsed into the strike.

The combined motion hurled the creature upward and off the ice. When gravity rejoined the conversation, the impact shattered the already fractured river beneath its weight.

The ice exploded.

The bear plunged through the frozen river in an explosion of white water and broken ice.

For a moment the forest fell silent again.

Then the surface erupted.

The monster exploded upward through the shattered ice with a roar of pure fury, water cascading from its fur as it dragged itself back onto the frozen surface. The sudden immersion had slowed it slightly, but the creature's fury had only intensified.

Steam rose from its coat as the freezing water crystallized instantly against its body.

The bear lunged again, pure fury driving it across the ice. It was almost too fast to keep track of. The bear finally saw me as enough of a threat to stop holding back.

I sprinted forward to meet it.

Force gathered beneath my stride.

The bear delayed its attack until the last possible moment, switching from what I thought would be a shoulder charge to sudden swipe with its massive claws.

Pain flared briefly as the claws made contact.

Then my motion took over.

The attack unraveled the moment it touched me.

The giant's body twisted violently as the force of the collision spilled sideways through its balance, sending the creature sliding across the ice in a spray of frozen debris.

My ribs cracked under the impact. My vision blurred for a moment as pain surged through me like a tidal wave. Each breath felt like knives twisting in my side.

The suit's interface flared red.

Progress.

But at a heavy cost.

The suit pulsed faintly as stored energy continued to climb, the blue lines across the armor glowing brighter with every collision.

I felt the armor tighten around my ribs as it began reinforcing the damaged bones. Steam rose from the suit as warmth spread through my chest. Breathing became slightly easier.

The bear staggered upright again.

This time it hesitated.

Its head swung slowly from side to side as it studied me with cold, calculating eyes. The monster had begun to understand that something about this fight was wrong.

Predators relied on overwhelming force.

But every time the bear attacked, the force came back stronger.

The creature roared again and prepared to charge.

Then it stopped.

Something moved deep within the forest behind it.

The bear turned its head slightly toward the distant tree line, its ears flattening against its skull as a low growl rumbled deep within its chest.

I followed its gaze.

At first I saw nothing.

Just the endless stretch of frozen forest fading into drifting fog.

Then I noticed the footprints.

Massive impressions crushed deep into the snow beyond the tree line, each one larger than the bear's paw and spaced far enough apart to suggest something far taller than any animal that belonged in this ecosystem.

Humanoid.

And there were several of them.

For a moment the forest remained perfectly still.

Watching.

Then the wind shifted.

The distant shapes vanished into the drifting snow.

The bear roared and turned its attention back to me.

But now I knew something else was out there.

And judging by the size of those footprints…

the bear might not be the apex predator here.
