Chapter 11 - Three’s A Crowd

The bear did not charge again.

For the first time since the fight began, the massive predator stepped backward.

The frozen river creaked beneath its weight as the monster's paws pressed into the fractured ice, its breath rolling from its mouth in thick clouds of steam that drifted upward into the pale gray sky. Ice crystals still clung to its fur like shattered glass embedded in white armor, but the creature's posture had changed.

It was thinking now.

The forest watched in silence as the bear's massive head turned slowly toward the river.

Then the monster stepped onto the ice.

The surface groaned beneath the sudden weight as cracks spiderwebbed outward from its paws. For a moment the creature stood there, its cold eyes locked on mine through the drifting snow.

Then it dropped.

The ice shattered beneath its weight as the bear plunged into the river with an explosion of frozen water.

For a moment the forest went completely still.

The shattered ice drifted slowly across the dark surface of the water while the current beneath carried fragments of frost downstream like broken mirrors sliding through black glass.

The bear did not reappear.

My eyes tracked the river.

The suit's blue lines glowed faintly against the falling snow while steam curled from the armor where earlier impacts had heated the reinforced fibers. The interface hovered faintly along the edge of my vision, its quiet indicators pulsing softly as the systems continued absorbing the residual energy from the fight.

The water beneath the ice shifted.

Slowly.

A dark shape slid beneath the frozen surface several meters downstream, barely visible beneath the thin layer of frost that coated the river like glass.

Then it vanished.

My eyes narrowed.

I exhaled slowly.

"So that's how you want to play it."

The river exploded.

The ice beneath my boots detonated upward as several tons of enraged polar bear erupted from the water directly beneath me, its jaws snapping shut where my torso had been a fraction of a second earlier.

The suit reacted instantly.

Movement Assist Engaged

The stored energy in the armor discharged in a sudden pulse of focused heat that pushed against the direction of my movement like an invisible hand correcting my balance. My body twisted sideways as the suit amplified the motion, pulling me just outside the arc of the bear's rising bite as its massive skull tore through the shattered ice.

Water erupted into the air around us.

The bear landed heavily on the riverbank behind me, its fur dripping with freezing water that crystallized almost instantly into jagged layers of frost.

Its eyes burned with fury.

It had learned something.

And now the real hunting began.

It lunged again and again through the ice until the fight started to feel less like a battle and more like a game of cat and mouse. Every time the bear resurfaced, we traded violence.

The bear crashed back through the river ice without hesitation, vanishing beneath the surface before I could close the distance. The water churned violently beneath the fractured ice while the current carried the monster downstream beneath the frozen surface.

The shadow returned beneath the ice.

Moving fast.

Too fast.

The river bulged upward several meters ahead of me as the bear surged upward from below. Ice shattered outward as its skull erupted through the frozen surface, claws slashing upward toward my chest in a sweeping arc meant to tear me in half.

Movement Assist Engaged

The suit pushed again.

My body pivoted around the incoming strike as my foot slid across the frozen surface. The bear's claws carved through empty air where I had been standing a moment earlier, the force of the collision pulling the monster partially out of the river as its own charge carried it across the ice.

The creature skidded sideways.

My palm struck its shoulder as it passed.

The bear's trajectory twisted violently as the energy of the collision tore its massive body sideways across the frozen river. The monster slammed into the ice shoulder-first, fracturing the surface beneath its weight before sliding several meters across the riverbank.

The system chimed.

The bear roared and plunged back into the river again.

The water swallowed it instantly.

The frozen surface above the river bulged outward as the creature accelerated beneath the ice like a torpedo moving through black water. Ice plates cracked and shifted as the shadow moved rapidly beneath the frozen surface.

Then the ice shattered again.

This time directly behind me.

The bear erupted upward with terrifying speed, claws snapping forward in a brutal downward swipe meant to crush my spine. Freezing water cascaded off its body while the monster's jaws snapped shut inches from my shoulder.

Movement Assist Engaged

The suit discharged another pulse of stored energy.

My stride lengthened instantly as the armor pushed my movement forward. The sudden surge of energy slid me beneath the bear's rising body as the monster overshot its own attack, its claws smashing into the frozen surface where I had been standing.

Ice exploded outward.

I turned.

The bear twisted in midair to face me again, landing heavily on the fractured ice as the river beneath groaned in protest. Its fur bristled violently while the freezing water running down its body hardened into thick layers of jagged frost.

The monster shook itself.

Ice shards launched outward again.

A storm of frozen projectiles screamed through the air as hundreds of razor-edged crystals blasted outward from its coat. The attack filled the frozen clearing in a cone of glittering frost.

I stepped forward.

Momentum surged beneath my feet.

Ice fragments screamed past me as I turned, while the few I couldn't dodge shattered against the hardened armor.

Energy crawled through the suit.

Kinetic Energy Storage: 63%

The bear roared again as it plunged back into the river.

The shadow beneath the ice moved faster this time.

The creature burst upward directly beneath me again, its massive jaws snapping upward with brutal force as the ice detonated around us.

Movement Assist Engaged

The suit discharged another pulse.

My body twisted sideways just enough to avoid the closing jaws as the bear's skull ripped through the ice beside me. Water erupted upward in a freezing column while the monster's momentum carried it partially out of the river again.

That was the mistake.

I stepped into the motion.

My fist struck the side of its skull.

The motion bent sharply under my control.

The energy of its own charge turned against it, throwing the bear sideways across the frozen river as its own charge collapsed under the direction of my movement. The monster skidded violently across the ice before slamming into the frozen surface hard enough to fracture it beneath its weight.

The river cracked.

The bear tried to recover.

Too slow.

I was already moving.

Momentum surged.

My stride carried me forward across the fractured ice as the lingering force from the earlier collision continued tearing the creature's balance apart. The bear twisted toward me again with a furious roar, its claws slashing outward in another desperate swipe.

A heartbeat before contact, I manually triggered the suit's movement assist and felt the stored energy dump into my motion.

Then came the point of contact.

For a fraction of a second its claws struck my forearm as I moved to deflect the blow.

Pain flared.

Then my momentum took over.

The bear's attack collapsed.

Without wasting the moment, I drove my finger forward.

The strike landed directly between the thick plates of bone along the creature's skull where the earlier collisions had already fractured the armor beneath its fur.

All that violent motion collapsed into a single point: the tip of my finger.

My finger punched through.

Through bone.

Through muscle.

Through the creature's skull.

The bear froze.

For a moment its massive body simply hung there, the energy of the impact rolling through its frame like a shockwave through stone.

Then the force finished propagating.

The bear's body collapsed.

Several tons of muscle and bone slammed into the frozen river hard enough to fracture the ice beneath it as the monster's weight crushed the surface into a spiderweb of spreading cracks.

The forest went silent.

The bear did not move again.

The system chimed quietly in my vision.

I exhaled slowly as steam from the suit curled upward around me.

The fight was finally over.

The bear's corpse had barely stopped moving when the forest answered.

Snow shifted between the trees.

At first the movement looked like nothing more than drifting powder carried on a lazy wind through the frozen pines. The fog rolled low across the forest floor while the branches above creaked quietly beneath the weight of frost.

Then three shapes stepped out of the white haze.

They were enormous.

Each of them stood nearly three times my height, their bodies thick and broad like walking boulders wrapped in pale blue skin that looked almost carved from ice itself. Frost clung to their shoulders in jagged layers while crude armor made from bone and frozen stone hung across their chests.

Their faces were wrong.

Where eyes should have been there was only smooth frozen skin.

Blind.

But the way their massive heads tilted slightly toward me made it very clear that they knew exactly where I was standing.

Their nostrils flared once.

One of them dragged a massive foot across the frozen river.

The sound of ice grinding beneath its weight echoed across the clearing like a blade scraping against glass.

They weren't looking.

They were listening.

Feeling.

Tracking the vibration of every step, every breath, every shift of snow across the ice.

The ogre in the center raised its hand.

Ice condensed in the air above its palm.

The temperature of the clearing dropped instantly as the moisture in the atmosphere crystallized into a long spear of frozen blue crystal. Frost crawled across the length of the weapon as it formed, the jagged shaft glowing faintly as cold energy condensed into solid matter.

My body registered the impact before my eyes even found the spear.

The impact hit my chest like a meteor.

The force ripped the air from my lungs as the frozen weapon slammed into the center of my armor and detonated into a violent burst of ice and kinetic force. My feet left the ground instantly as the impact hurled my body backward across the river like a ragdoll thrown by a giant.

The world became motion as my body flipped head over heels across the ice, skipping violently over the frozen surface while the force of the impact hurled me dozens of meters down the river. The armor hardened instantly beneath the impact, but the force behind the strike was monstrous.

The ice shattered beneath my back as I skipped across the surface like a stone thrown across water.

Then the forest caught me.

The first tree exploded as my body slammed into the trunk hard enough to split it in half.

The impact drove me through the wreckage.

The second tree snapped like dry timber.

The third didn't break.

I went through it.

Wood splintered violently around me as the trunk shattered across my shoulders and ribs, the force of the impact tearing the air from my lungs again before the collision launched me deeper into the forest.

Branches whipped past my vision in a violent blur.

Another tree.

Another impact.

Another explosion of wood and snow.

My body finally stopped several seconds later when the last collision buried me halfway into a dense cluster of pines where shattered branches and broken trunks collapsed around me in a slow avalanche of debris.

The forest went quiet.

For several seconds I couldn't breathe.

The world had narrowed into a dull roaring sound inside my ears while bright sparks flickered across the edge of my vision. My body refused to move as pain flooded every nerve at once, the weight of the impacts settling into my bones like a slow earthquake moving through my chest.

Then the alarms began.

The suit's interface erupted across my vision in a storm of flashing warnings.

CRITICAL STRUCTURAL DAMAGE DETECTED

CARDIAC FAILURE DETECTED

RESPIRATORY FAILURE DETECTED

Emergency Medical Systems Engaged

The blue lines across the armor flared violently as the suit shifted into emergency mode. Stored kinetic energy surged through the system as every collision after the spear strike was captured and dumped into the armor's internal reserves.

Energy levels spiked beyond normal capacity.

KINETIC ENERGY STORAGE: 312%

EMERGENCY MODE ACTIVATED

MOVEMENT ASSIST: UNRESTRICTED

Heat flooded the interior of the suit as the armor began forcing blood circulation back into my limbs. The warmth felt like fire spreading across my chest while the system desperately attempted to stabilize the damage caused by the ogre's attack.

My lungs refused to move.

Each attempt to breathe produced nothing but a hollow pressure in my chest.

Collapsed lung.

As if that was not enough, somewhere between the frozen river and the trees that broke my momentum, I went into cardiac arrest.

For a moment the forest remained completely silent as snow drifted slowly down through the shattered branches around me.

So this was how it ended.

Not with some grand battle.

Just a spear thrown from the treeline.

My hand twitched.

The suit pumped heat into my muscles as emergency stimulants surged through the armor's medical systems, forcing the nerves in my arm to respond.

I slowly raised my fist.

Every movement felt like dragging my body through wet cement.

The forest blurred in and out of focus as darkness crept along the edges of my vision.

My fist hovered over my chest.

Then I brought it down.

Hard.

Momentum surged through the motion.

The force of the strike drove through my ribs before the ability inside my body seized control of the collision. Instead of letting the impact finish me, I forced the energy inward toward my heart and lungs.

My lung expanded violently.

Air rushed back into my body like a tidal wave.

My heart convulsed.

Once.

Then again.

Pain detonated through my entire body as oxygen flooded back into my bloodstream and the world snapped violently back into focus.

The system chimed.

ALL ATTRIBUTES: DOUBLED

Power surged through my muscles like a second heartbeat as the ability inside my body expanded beyond its previous limits. My body felt lighter and more agile. Movement became effortless.

I pushed myself to my feet slowly, heat distorted the air around me as the armor vented the excess energy it had dumped into my body

Across the forest the ogres were moving.

Three massive silhouettes stepping through the drifting snow as they followed the trail of destruction my body had carved through the trees.

They didn't rush. They knew I wasn't dead yet. They knew exactly how close I was.

My fists tightened.

The suit pulsed around me as the stored energy surged through the armor's movement systems.

KINETIC ENERGY RESERVE: 287%

I stared at the approaching giants through the falling snow.

I took a mental note of the state of my body and the helplessness that had washed over me when the spear hit. This fight was more than I had been ready for.

Then I spoke quietly.

"Never again."

I died helpless once already. I refused to feel that weak again. Not in this life. Never again.
