Chapter 33: Three Thousand Thunder Tempests
Shigaraki Tomura turned toward the source of the screams, his brow tightening.
"Kurogiri. Go see what's happening."
"You think I'll just let him leave?"
Aizawa burst through the surrounding villains and lashed his capture weapon around Kurogiri's body—but the warp villain slipped away in an instant, vanishing into mist.
"Tch. Warp-type Quirks are a pain," Aizawa muttered.
Then he fixed his attention back on Shigaraki.
That man was dangerous.
Nearby, Bakugo looked toward the distant section of the USJ.
"What the hell is that noise?"
The screams were coming from one of the separated zones.
Aizawa was still here.
Thirteen was protecting the students.
So the source could only be—
Bakugo's eyes narrowed.
"Akio…"
He clicked his tongue.
"Damn it. I'm not falling behind him."
Fueled by sheer irritation, he blasted forward and slammed a villain in the face with an explosion. When the smoke cleared, the man's face was blackened beyond recognition.
Far away in the desert zone, Akio stood atop the sand, breathing heavily.
The attack he had just used had cost him a lot. It was a wide-range move, and even for him, that kind of output wasn't something he could keep throwing around forever.
All around him, the desert zone had turned into a graveyard of bodies.
The nearly forty villains stationed there had all been caught in the electric burst. Most of them lay motionless on the sand, their clothes scorched and smoking. A few were unconscious.
A few others were dead.
Akio did not look troubled by it.
He wasn't soft-hearted.
These were villains who had come here intending to kill students and assassinate All Might. He had no obligation to treat that lightly.
He had held back before because he didn't want to expose too much too early. He still hadn't been strong enough to protect himself from the consequences.
But things were different now.
Both his Lightning Quirk and Air Manipulation had reached Level 3, and his physical conditioning had advanced significantly. At this point, he had enough strength to protect himself and enough speed to escape from almost anyone if he truly needed to.
A few of the stronger villains slowly pushed themselves back to their feet.
They looked at him with naked fear.
To them, Akio was no longer a student.
He was a monster.
Then a familiar swirl of dark mist formed in the air.
Kurogiri appeared.
The moment he saw the desert strewn with fallen villains, even he visibly faltered.
Then his gaze lifted to Akio.
"…You did this?"
Akio gave him a flat look.
"Do you see anyone else here?"
Kurogiri's tone dipped lower.
"Very impressive."
"U.A. really does gather troublesome people."
"If someone like you is allowed to grow, you'll become a serious threat to the League."
Akio smiled faintly beneath the mask.
"And what are you planning to do about it?"
"I don't have time to stand here and argue with a child," Kurogiri replied.
The mist around him twisted open again.
Out of it came the winged Nomu.
Then Kurogiri vanished.
Akio's expression sharpened.
"So that's how it is. You sent me something annoying."
The black Nomu was the real monster, but this one was dangerous too.
He didn't know its exact specifications.
Speed?
Power?
Regeneration?
Something else?
The surviving villains started trying to get back up again, and Akio casually knocked them flat with bursts of compressed air before turning all of his attention to the Nomu.
It moved first.
Its wings beat once—
And it was suddenly in front of him.
"What fast speed," Akio muttered.
He reacted instantly, lightning bursting around his body as he slipped past the first strike. Sand exploded behind him.
In the same motion, he twisted around, planted his feet, and drove a punch into the Nomu's back.
"Air Tremor!"
A sharp crack split the air.
For an instant, the atmosphere around his fist seemed to collapse inward, and the impact sent the Nomu flying straight into the ruins.
Akio did not stop.
He widened his stance, right hand high, left hand low, aiming both toward the collapsed structure.
"Air Compression — Maximum!"
Boom!
A visible shockwave burst outward.
The entire pile of ruins compressed inward like brittle biscuit crumbs under an invisible press. Dust and smoke exploded into the sky.
Akio exhaled hard.
This had turned into a full-power fight.
The only reason he could still move so well was because his physical conditioning had reached the point where his stamina could support this kind of output.
As the dust cleared, the Nomu seemed thinner, weaker, its form damaged.
Akio narrowed his eyes.
Did that finish it?
Then—
Boom!
A fist smashed into his body before he could fully react.
Akio spat blood as he flew backward and crashed into the sand.
His vision blurred for a second.
The Nomu stood there, blank-eyed and upright, as if nothing that had just happened mattered at all.
It did not flinch.
It did not breathe harder.
It simply stared at him like a machine awaiting the next command.
"I knew it," Akio muttered, wiping blood from his mouth. "I'm still going to have to use that."
He reached into his system storage and took a pull from the Quirk Supplement.
Warmth spread through him instantly.
His injuries faded.
The strain in his body disappeared.
Both of his Quirks returned to peak condition in seconds.
Akio stood.
This time, lightning gathered in his right hand.
Air pressure swirled into his left.
Then he brought them together.
The two forces merged.
"Die."
His voice was cold.
Then he roared:
"Three Thousand Thunder Tempests!"
The moment the attack was released, a violent tornado erupted around the Nomu.
Air pressure formed the core.
Lightning raged through it like a storm trapped inside a spinning blade.
It was no longer just wind.
It was a thunderstorm made solid.
The Nomu was dragged into the center and shredded by the attack. Its wings ripped apart under the pressure, sparks exploding across its body as yellow sand and debris were swept into the vortex with it.
From where Akio stood, he could barely see anything inside.
The storm roared too loudly.
The light was too bright.
When it finally began to fade, he was breathing hard again.
That was the strongest move he had used so far.
Even so, Akio understood something clearly—
Nomu weren't human.
Cutting off air wouldn't kill them.
Crushing their breathing wouldn't stop them.
They didn't seem to need to breathe at all.
They were closer to machines than living things.
Back at the plaza, Kurogiri turned toward the distant disturbance again.
His expression changed.
Why was the desert zone erupting like that?
Hadn't he sent the Nomu there specifically to eliminate that student?
"What is it?" Shigaraki asked, annoyed.
Kurogiri answered immediately, "I need to check—"
"No."
Shigaraki's voice sharpened.
"Forget it."
Then his eyes locked on Aizawa.
"Kill this troublesome teacher first."
