Chapter 34 - Love's Desperate Flame

Chapter 33: The Blood of the Protector

The air atop the jagged cliffs was no longer filled with the scent of pine; it was thick with the copper tang of blood and the suffocating stench of shadow magic. The Alpha stood his ground, his breathing ragged, his silver blade notched from the relentless strikes of the Shadow-Stalker. This creature wasn't meant to be fought with steel alone, but the Alpha's sheer willpower kept his arm steady.

"Is this all the High Council has to send?" the Alpha spat, wiping a streak of blood from his brow. "A puppet made of rot and whispers?"

The Shadow-Stalker didn't answer with words. It lunged again, its movements a blur of disjointed limbs and dark smoke. This time, its claws found a gap in the Alpha's defense, tearing through his shoulder. He roared in pain, but instead of backing away, he stepped into the strike, driving his blade deep into the creature's misty core.

Inside the cave, the Omega's eyes flew open. The bond between them screamed. She didn't just feel his pain; she tasted his sacrifice. The fire within her, which she had been trying so hard to suppress and control, suddenly flared—not with anger, but with a desperate, protective love.

"Stop fighting the flame," the Ancient Watcher's voice boomed, sensing the shift. "He is dying to give you this moment. If you don't accept the power now, his blood will be on your hands."

The Omega stood up, her hair whipping around her face in an invisible wind. She stopped trying to cage the beast. Instead, she opened the doors of her soul and invited it in. The blue fire didn't explode outward this time; it flowed inward, coating her veins in liquid light, turning her into a living conduit of the first lineage.

"He won't die today," she said, her voice sounding like a chorus of a thousand ancestors.

Without another word, she sprinted toward the cave's exit. The Watcher didn't stop her. He watched her go, a grim smile on his face. The training wasn't over, but the hunt surely was.
