Chapter 80 - "The Whispering Woods"

Chapter 76: The Whispering Woods

The transition from the familiar borders of the Silver Moon Pack to the unclaimed territories was jarring. The air grew colder, and the lush greenery of the valley was replaced by gnarled, ancient trees that seemed to lean toward the travelers. This was the edge of the Whispering Woods, a place where the barrier between the physical world and the spirit realm was dangerously thin.

"Don't listen to the wind," Valerius warned, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "The woods here are sensitive to guilt. They will try to pull memories from your mind and play them back to you."

Silas tightened his grip on Elara's hand. He could already hear it—faint echoes of his own voice from years ago, shouting accusations at Elara. The woods were amplifying his deepest regrets. He looked at Elara, worried that she was hearing the same, but she seemed focused, her silver mark emitting a steady, rhythmic glow that acted like a lantern in the gloom.

"The map says we must find the 'Stone of the First Path' before midnight," Elara said, her voice steady despite the eerie atmosphere. "If we miss the alignment of the moon, the trail to the Forbidden Peaks will vanish for another century."

Suddenly, a rustle in the undergrowth stopped them cold. It wasn't a wolf or a shadow creature. Out of the fog stepped a young girl, her clothes tattered and her eyes a strange, glowing amber. She didn't look afraid; she looked hungry.

"You carry the mark of the chosen," the girl said, her voice sounding like multiple people speaking at once. "But the Vault doesn't want heroes. It wants a sacrifice of blood and light."

Silas stepped in front of Elara, his eyes flashing gold. "Who are you?"

"I am the Echo," the girl whispered, fading back into the mist. "And you are being followed. Not by shadows, but by those you once called brothers."

A distant howl pierced the air—a howl that Silas recognized all too well. It was the signal of the rogue Council guards who had escaped the trial. They weren't just following; they were hunting.

"We don't have time to fight them here," Valerius hissed. "We need to reach the Stone. Now!"

As they began to run through the thickening fog, Elara realized that the map wasn't just a guide; it was a race. And the prize was the very survival of their bloodline.
