Chapter 77: The Trial of the Stone
The howling behind them grew closer, the sound of paws thumping against the damp earth vibrating through the trees. Silas skidded to a halt in front of a massive, moss-covered monolith that stood in a natural clearing. This was it—the Stone of the First Path. It wasn't just a marker; it was a test.
"The alignment is starting!" Valerius shouted, pointing at the moon which was slowly sliding into the center of two jagged mountain peaks. "Elara, the mark! You have to activate the stone before they reach us."
Just as Elara stepped toward the monolith, three massive wolves with blood-red eyes burst through the fog. These weren't ordinary rogues; they were the Council's elite guards, their bodies twisted by the same dark magic that had fueled the Void-Walker.
"Go, Elara! Don't look back!" Silas roared, shifting mid-air as he lunged at the lead guard. The clearing became a chaotic blur of fur, teeth, and snarls. Silas fought with a desperate ferocity, his golden aura clashing against the dark shadows of his former brothers.
Elara placed her trembling hands on the cold surface of the stone. She felt the Whispering Woods trying to cloud her mind again, showing her images of Silas falling in battle. "It's not real," she whispered to herself, closing her eyes. "The light is the only truth."
She channeled the Lunar Resonance, her silver mark burning with a white-hot intensity. The moss on the stone began to wither away, revealing ancient carvings that glowed with a celestial blue light. The ground groaned as the monolith began to sink into the earth, revealing a hidden spiral staircase leading deep underground.
"Silas! Valerius! The path is open!" Elara screamed.
Silas delivered a crushing blow to the last guard and scrambled toward the opening just as the moon reached its peak alignment. As they dove into the dark entrance, the stone monolith slid back into place with a deafening thud, sealing the Council guards outside.
They were safe for now, but as they looked down the long, glowing corridor of the underground passage, they realized they weren't alone. Stone statues of ancient Alphas lined the walls, and their eyes seemed to follow every move.
"Welcome to the Path of Trials," a booming, disembodied voice echoed through the hall. "Only those with a pure heart and a unified soul may pass. The rest... shall become part of the stone."
