Chapter 126: The Burden of Truth
The air in the lower archives grew heavy, thick with the scent of ozone and the metallic tang of Silas's mounting fury. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the edge of the obsidian pillar, his eyes flashing with a predatory, golden light that usually only emerged during a hunt.
"They lied to us for generations, Elara," Silas growled, his voice vibrating against the stone walls like low thunder. "The Elders told us the Moon-Oak was our protector, a divine gift to the Alpha lineage. But it wasn't a gift—it was a cage. They were using our sacred tree to imprison a monster."
Elara reached out, her fingers trembling as she brushed the flickering purple hue of the pillar. The moment her skin touched the surface, a cold shiver raced up her spine. "Silas, look at the seal. It's not just weakening... it's hemorrhaging energy. The Elders didn't try to burn the tree to save us from heresy. They tried to burn it because they were terrified. They knew the Sleeping King was waking up, and they were too cowardly to face the debt the first Alpha owed."
A sudden, rhythmic thud echoed from the spiral staircase above—the sound of heavy boots. The Elders. They had realized the archive had been breached.
"They're coming," Silas said, his body tensing as his claws began to unsheathe. "They won't let us leave this place alive once they realize we've seen the truth. To them, our silence is more valuable than our lives."
Elara looked toward the back of the chamber, where the darkness seemed to swallow the light from her silver orb. There, nestled between the roots of the Moon-Oak, was a narrow crawlspace—a path that led deeper into the earth, away from the exit.
"We can't go back up, Silas," she whispered, her eyes meeting his with a mix of fear and determination. "If we go out there, they'll execute us for 'blasphemy' to keep their secrets safe. But if we go down... we might find the heart of the seal. We might find a way to fix what the first Alpha broke."
Silas looked at the staircase, then back at the woman who had stood by him through every betrayal. He took her hand, his touch grounding her.
"The Alpha's path was never meant to be easy," Silas muttered, his voice softening just for her. "If the truth lies in the darkness, then that is where we must go. Let them come. By the time they find us, I will either be a king of ruins or the man who finally set us free."
Together, they stepped into the abyss, leaving the fading light of the archives behind as the heavy stone doors above began to groan open.
