Chapter 129 - "The Heart of the Abyss"

Chapter 127: The Heart of the Abyss

The narrow tunnel felt like the throat of a giant beast, closing in on them with every step. The glowing silver orb in Elara's hand flickered, its light struggling against a thick, unnatural darkness that seemed to swallow sound itself.

"Do you feel that, Silas?" Elara whispered, her voice trembling. "The air... it tastes like iron and ancient magic."

Silas didn't answer immediately. His senses were dialed to their absolute limit. Below them, the faint purple hum they had seen in the archives had transformed into a rhythmic thrumming—like a massive, slow-beating heart.

As they reached the end of the descent, the tunnel opened into a cavern of staggering proportions. But it wasn't a natural cave. The walls were lined with colossal ribs made of white stone, curving upward to meet a ceiling lost in shadow. In the center of the chamber sat a throne, not made of obsidian this time, but of living roots from the Moon-Oak above.

And on that throne sat a figure.

He was silent, draped in tattered robes of midnight blue, his head bowed. Chains of pure silver—thicker than a man's torso—bound his arms and chest to the throne. But it wasn't the figure that drew Silas's breath away. It was the wolf lying at the figure's feet.

The wolf was massive, its fur a ghostly, translucent white. It looked exactly like the statues of the First Alpha, but it was starving, its ribs showing, its eyes glowing with a dim, pained silver light.

"The pact," Silas breathed, realization hitting him like a physical blow. "The First Alpha didn't just imprison the King. He imprisoned himself to act as the guard. He's been here for centuries, feeding the seal with his own life force."

Suddenly, the figure on the throne moved. A dry, rasping sound filled the cavern—the sound of vocal cords that hadn't been used in an eternity.

"So..." the figure whispered, his eyes snapping open to reveal twin voids of purple fire. "The blood of the traitor finally returns to pay the debt."

Behind them, the sound of the Elders' footsteps grew louder. They were trapped between the sins of their ancestors and the vengeance of a forgotten king.
