Chapter 41 - Dawn of 2009

January 2, 2009.

The silence that followed the New Year's Eve firecrackers in General Trias was profound.

In the first timeline, the early hours of 2009 were filled with the muffled anxiety of families checking their savings, wondering if the global recession would finally reach the shores of the Philippines.

But in this version of history, the air smelled of new asphalt and wet concrete.

Xavier stood on the balcony of the nearly finished Guest Wing of the Guan Manor.

At eight years old, he was physically small.

Below him, the 100-hectare estate was taking shape.

To the east, the Pagoda glowed with a steady blue heartbeat.

To the west, the artificial stream that would cool the subterranean data center trickled rhythmically.

"The VNE Segment 2 is officially open" Leo said, stepping onto the balcony.

He was wearing a casual polo, a rare sight for a man who had spent the last year in tailored suits. "The first logistics run from the Manila Steel Mill arrived at the Cavite Hub ten minutes ago. No traffic, no checkpoints"

Xavier looked out at the dark silhouette of the Vanguard National Expressway. "How are the numbers, Leo?"

"The Work-Trias initiative has hired four thousand men in the last month alone" Leo reported.

"We're rebuilding the town's drainage and roads. The Mayor's office tried to take credit for the new irrigation canals, but the people know. They saw the Vanguard Bank payroll vans. The sentiment is shifting, Xavi"

Xavier nodded.

By providing jobs when everyone else was firing, the Guan family reputation made a massive leap.

---------------

The first Monday of January brought the reality of Clara's request.

Xavier sat at his desk. The room was cool, and every student now had a Magic Book tablet.

"Okay, class" Mrs. Santos said, her voice bright. "Today we're going to discuss the water cycle. Please open your tablets to the Interactive Simulation"

Xavier tapped his screen. It was a simplified version of the atmospheric models.

Beside him, Aris was focused on his screen, his fingers moving with a practiced, methodical grace.

Aris was no longer the hunched, fearful boy of Grade 4. He was the President of the Vanguard Coding Club.

He had also become the tail of Xavier.

"Xavi" Aris whispered during the lesson. "The seniors in the club... they've finished the first module of the new Guardian Messenger encryption. They're asking if they can test it on the Axiom servers"

"Tell them to wait for the weekend" Xavier whispered back. "We need to stress-test the back-end first. And Aris? Tell the Grade 6 guys to stop using the high-frequency channel for Ragnarok chats. Mark says it's causing static on the security"

Aris nodded solemnly. "I'll handle it"

Xavier leaned back, letting the sounds of the classroom wash over him.

The scratching of pencils, the quiet giggles of the girls in the front row, the smell of chalk and floor wax.

This was the childhood Clara wanted for him. It was slow, predictable, and remarkably grounding.

For a few hours a day, he was just a boy who had to make sure his homework was done.

---------------

At 3:00 PM.

Inside the van, the atmosphere was clinical. Leo and Vee were on a call with a shell entity in Singapore.

"The Argentine peso is in free-fall" Vee reported, showing a series of currency charts. "The global credit crunch has hit South America hard. Several major mining conglomerates have halted exploration in the Salta and Jujuy provinces. They're desperate for liquidity"

"What's the target?" Xavier asked, his voice losing its school-boy lilt.

"Salar de la Puna" Leo said, pulling up a geological map. "It's a massive brine deposit. The current owners, a local group backed by a Spanish bank, are facing a $120 million debt deadline by the end of the month. They've offered us a 49% stake for $80 million cash, with an option to buy the remaining 51% in 2011"

Xavier looked at the Abyss's projections.

[ABYSS: LITHIUM DEMAND CURVE. 2009: $4,500/ton. 2012: $9,000/ton. 2020: $75,000/ton. STATUS: UNDERVALUED ASSET.]

"Take the deal" Xavier commanded. "Make sure the contract includes the Infrastructure Development clause. We'll provide the solar arrays and the satellite communication nodes for the site. We don't just want the lithium; we want the technical control of the extraction"

"Eighty million dollars" Vee noted, her pen hovering over the ledger.

"That's nearly four billion pesos. Our cash reserve will drop to $130 million"

"It's not an expense, Vee" Xavier said. "You'll soon know"

---------------

The van pulled into the gates of the Guan Manor as the sun began to set.

The estate was a sprawling fusion of concrete, glass, and dark wood.

The main house was built around a central courtyard, with wide, sweeping eaves that mirrored the traditional Chinese Siheyuan .

Arthur was standing in the courtyard, talking to Engineer Alvin.

"The signal is 100% stable within the walls" Alvin reported. "We've established the air-gap. The Manor is effectively invisible to the national telco scanners"

Suddenly, the front door burst open.

"KUYA! PA!"

Mei-Mei came charging out, followed by a small parade of her friends from the Little Angels Academy. The girls were all wearing sparkly blue Guardian armbands Mei-Mei had convinced Mark to make for them.

"We're the Magic Sentinels!" Mei-Mei cheered, brandishing her Magic Book.

"We're going to find all the hidden stickers in the garden!"

One of the girls looked at Xavier with awe. "Is it true? Is this house really built of magic?"

"It's just strong steel, Chloe" Xavier said, smiling at his sister's entourage. "But it has a lot of stories"

Mei-Mei led her sentinels toward the artificial stream, her laughter echoing through the courtyard.

She was no longer confused by the moving; she had turned the manor into her personal headquarters.

Her friends came over to play.

Clara walked out, carrying a tray of tea. She watched the children for a moment before turning to Xavier.

"She's happy, Xavi"

"That's the point, Ma" Xavier said.

"I know" Clara whispered. "But Arthur... he's starting to feel the weight. He spent the whole morning talking to the Board about the union negotiations in Pasig. He's becoming a real Chairman. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing"

Xavier looked at his father, who was now laughing with Alvin over a blueprint.

Arthur had grown too.

"It's a necessary thing, Ma" Xavier said.

---------------

Late that night, Xavier sat in the subterranean server room of the manor. The air was perfectly still, cooled by the artificial stream flowing overhead. He pulled out the 2031 phone.

"Abyss, current date"

[JANUARY 2, 2009. 11:45 PM.]

"Status of the Manila Blue Chips"

[PSEi IS STABILIZING. VANGUARD SHELLS OWN 4.8% OF MERALCO, 4.5% OF PLDT, AND 3.9% OF AYALA LAND. ALL STAKES ARE BELOW DISCLOSURE THRESHOLDS.]

"What is the priority for Q1?"

[SEARCHING... IDENTIFIED OPPORTUNITY: THE 2010 ELECTION CYCLE. MUNICIPAL AND NATIONAL DATABASE INTEGRATION. DATA IS THE ONLY PREDICTIVE ENGINE FOR POLITICAL ALIGNMENT.]

Xavier looked at the screen. He thought of his Uncle Julian, the principal who was currently visiting barangays, handing out school supplies and listening to the stories of the workers.

"Data isn't just numbers" Xavier whispered. "It's people"

He looked at the small, 3D-printed dragon Mei-Mei had left on his desk.

It was a messy, lopsided thing, but it was real.

The world was still in a recession. The banks were still failing.

"2009" Xavier said to the dark.

[STATUS: ASCENDING. ASSETS: PHP 12M (LIQUID) + 12M (LOGISTICS) + 100M (MANOR) + $130M (CASH) + $80M (LITHIUM STAKE) + $182M (MIDAS UNREALIZED) + 60M (BANK ASSETS) + MSM (100%) + PHIL-SEMI (60%) + VANGUARD MOBILE (80%)]

[EMPIRE PROGRESS: 88.0%.]
