I drifted in and out of consciousness, like my mind wanted to be awake but my body just couldn't keep up. During one of these half wakeful moments I overheard Kay speaking in an annoyed tone to someone. Must've been a phone call since I couldn't hear the other half of the conversation.
"What do you need with him?"
Who was 'him' and why was Kay so worked up over him?
"And?"
Kay went silent for a long time. Long enough for me to begin to slip into unconsciousness. I was startled awake as he swore loudly.
"Fuck! It's that bad? Why didn't…No, you're right."
More silence.
"Should I- No, he's sleeping," Kay scoffed, "I didn't! You know what, it's none of your business!"
I opened my eyes a sliver. Kay was sitting on the end of his bed, head in his hands. He rubbed his hands over his face and turned towards me. I closed my eyes. For some reason beyond me I felt the need to feign sleep.
