"Has anyone been bothering you lately?" Kay broke the silent chill that'd hung over us all through dinner.
It startled me enough that I almost choked. My eyes went wide. I stared at Kay, half wondering if he was speaking to someone else despite the two of us being the only people in the room.
Maybe the apartment was haunted and he'd made acquaintances with the ghost.
After a few beats of him watching me expectantly, I hesitantly spoke, "No- I mean, what do you mean by that?"
Kay shrugged. He lifted his fork to his mouth and took a bite. My eyes wandered as he chewed, trailing across the flexing facial muscles and down to his bobbing adams apple. My mouth suddenly felt dry as the sahara. My drink trembled in my hand as I lifted it to my lips.
My conversation with Nina weighed on my mind. Everything she said made sense, I'd nearly made up my mind to move past this foolish one sided crush. Only for her to double back the moment she heard Kay's name.
"Do you know Nina Weir?"
