It didn't take long for Salvar to be in motion.
He was on his feet before the thought had fully completed itself, moving toward the hallway where Skyler.
He was three steps from the hallway entrance when the phone buzzed again.
He looked down at it out of reflex.
'Suspicious of Skyler? Think again.'
Salvar stopped walking.
He stood in the middle of the penthouse with the phone in his hand, the message on the screen, and the particular stillness of someone whose momentum had just been interrupted by something they could not immediately categorize.
He breathed.
Once. Deliberately.
Then he turned, walked to the dining table, and placed the phone down with more force than was strictly necessary.
It buzzed again almost immediately.
He didn't look at it.
Instead, he walked toward the window and stared down at the city below, which continued operating without any awareness of or interest in his situation, which he found unhelpful but expected.
