Chapter 108 - Chapter 108: The Calm Before the Storm (Bonus Chapter)

Just as Jack was already imagining a chaotic future with this future daughter, he was interrupted by the sound of someone knocking at the door.

KNOCK KNOCK

"Who's coming now." Before he could see who was outside, Emma ran past him to open the door.

"It must be Morgan, who came after seeing her parents." Before Jack could tell her to check through the door hole first, she opened the door.

The one standing outside was a cute girl the same age as his daughter.

Jack looked at her for a second. Those eyes. Sharp and already scanning the whole room.

Yep. That's Tony Stark's kid.

Seeing the girl, Jack suddenly thought of the classic line. "I love you 3000."

"Morgan, come inside." Emma invited her in.

"Dad, this is Morgan Stark, and Morgan, this is my past dad." Emma introduced her to Jack.

"Godfather, it's good to see you." Hearing Morgan call him godfather made Jack puzzled.

"Godfather? Me?"

Emma folded her arms. "In the future, you and Uncle Tony are really close. So when Morgan was born, dad picked you as her godfather."

"And Uncle Tony is my godfather," Emma added.

Morgan nodded. "You come to our house a lot. Dad says you're the only one who actually keeps up with him."

Jack stood there for a moment. Him and Tony. Godfathers to each other's kids. "That's either really nice or really terrifying."

"So did you meet your parents?" Emma asked Morgan. Jack was also interested to know if she had met her parents.

"Father seems to be busy creating the Iron Man suit so he didn't leave the villa the entire time. I only had the chance to see mother from far away."

Hearing this, Jack felt really relieved that things didn't get any more complicated.

"So what's the plan?" Morgan asked.

Emma sat up straight. "Ok so basically, we wait here for the rescue from the future. While we wait, Dad also helps us build a time machine as a backup. No school, no homework, no future disasters to worry about. We just stay here, don't tell anyone anything about the future, don't change anything, and wait."

"So while living here with uncle Jack, without changing the past or telling the future to anyone, we will minimize our effects till we go back to the future, right?"

"Yes, it's like a vacation." Seeing both of them high-five made Jack sigh.

"Ahh, what a life."

"Red Queen, arrange an ID for both of them that won't get caught easily."

"Ok, master, I will do it perfectly."

"Now I should fix this floor before anyone comes to visit me, and you kids can take the room on the 1st floor." Hearing Jack's words, Emma looked at the broken floor and felt embarrassed. She suddenly thought of something and looked into her storage bag.

"Dad, I can fix it with this easily." Seeing her take out what looked like a toy gun, Jack was really interested to see how she would fix it.

"See this." With a press the gun shot a beam at the damaged parts and soon it was fixed like it was never broken before.

"Is this using nanobots?" Watching the gun easily fix things, he was really interested.

"Yes, it seems to use some special nanobots to fix things, but it can't fix all things, only common objects." Seeing her father interested in her gadgets, she explained.

Seeing her put the nanobot gun back into her storage belt, he was curious about it.

"This was also your gift. It has many weapons like that axe I used, to fight alongside the aliens, and some other gadgets. And this thing can change its shape alongside the aliens so it's a very convenient thing." She pressed something on the side, and the belt shifted into a thin ring sitting in her palm.

Jack stared at it. "How."

She pressed it again and it curved into a necklace.

"It can change shape so I can carry it anywhere without anyone noticing." She clipped it back into belt form.

That was really useful. I need one too.

"How many items do you have in that storage device of yours?" Jack was really curious what other future devices this kid had.

She jumped onto the nearby sofa and waved him over.

"Come closer."

With her near his ear, she said, "It's a secret." With that, she jumped up and ran off laughing.

Seeing this, Morgan also laughed and ran with her.

"This…" Seeing this, Jack was amused and ran to catch her.

Just as Jack was playing with his future daughter, Jean DeWolff was having her worst day.

"Dammit." Jean kicked the police car tire.

"Hey, don't stress over it. I'll call the mechanic to fix it." Jean's partner John said while calling the mechanic.

"Since morning, things have been going wrong" Jean complained while looking around. It was an empty street with the sun at its peak.

"It seems the mechanic will come late, it may take an hour." Hearing this, Jean felt today was really a bad day again.

Just as Jean was thinking of calling a cab, she saw a police car coming down the street.

Once the car was nearby them, the window rolled down.

"Hello, Captain Jean, any problem?" an honest-looking police officer asked.

"Carter, it's good to see you. I have a meeting at the police station. Can you drop me by?"

"Of course, get in."

"John, I'll leave first. Bye." Jean told John to wait until the mechanic arrived and got into Carter's car.

In the car, Jean was seriously checking her files. Seeing this, Stan Carter asked what she was busy with.

"This is the case file of that psycho killer, codename Sin-Eater, who attacked Captain George."

"Is there any clue about him?" Carter asked casually.

"No, but it will be soon. Even today's meeting is to discuss how to find him. If I ever get to see that bastard, I will shoot him right there."

Jean flipped to the next page without even looking up.

"Sin-Eater. Who names themselves Sin-Eater? What does that even mean? Is he eating sins? Is that a thing? Does it taste good?"

Carter said nothing.

"And the outfit." Jean shook her head. "Black coat, creepy mask, dramatic voice. The man is running around New York looking like a Halloween costume that got too confident."

Still nothing from Carter.

"I've arrested guys who robbed convenience stores with more dignity than this." She turned another page. "At least they had the decency to look embarrassed."

Jean leaned back slightly.

"Attacks a police captain, disappears into thin air, leaves behind a cool nickname. What's next? He starts mailing us riddles? Starts leaving roses at crime scenes?"

She let out a short laugh at her own thought.

"Honestly, if he put even half the energy he spends on being insane into literally anything else, he could have been a decent accountant by now. Good steady job. Pension plan. No one is chasing him."

She closed the file and looked out the window, still shaking her head.

Carter kept his eyes on the road. Both hands on the wheel now. He hadn't said a single word since she started talking.

But what Jean didn't notice was that while talking about Sin-Eater, Carter's grip on the steering wheel tightened. For a moment, his face went cold before he quickly returned to normal.
