Chapter 3 - Shadows On The Path

Chapter 3: Shadows on the Path

The road leading out of Eldoria stretched between tall trees and rocky hills. Morning light filtered through the branches, but the forest felt quieter than usual. Almost too quiet.

Arin walked beside Mira, his mind racing with everything that had happened the night before. The strange power inside him still lingered like a warm flame in his chest.

He looked down at his hands.

The Master Emerald chose me… but why?

"Are you thinking about it again?" Mira asked, glancing at him.

Arin sighed. "How could I not? Yesterday I was just a normal boy from Eldoria. Now suddenly I'm supposed to protect some ancient emerald that controls incredible power."

Mira gave a small smile. "You're not just a normal boy, Arin. You never were."

He raised an eyebrow. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"You're brave," she said. "You always run toward trouble instead of away from it. Remember when you climbed the old cliffs just to see what was up there?"

Arin laughed quietly. "I almost fell that day."

"Exactly," Mira replied. "But you didn't."

Ahead of them, the mysterious traveler stopped walking. His cloak swayed gently in the wind as he looked toward the distant mountains.

"The floating island lies beyond those peaks," he said calmly. "That is where the Master Emerald rests."

Arin followed his gaze. Even from far away, he could see something strange in the sky—clouds swirling in a circular pattern high above the mountains.

"That's where the emerald is?" Arin asked.

"Yes," the traveler replied. "But reaching it will not be easy. Those who seek its power will try to stop you."

As if the forest itself had heard those words, a sudden rustling sound echoed through the trees.

Mira stopped walking.

"Did you hear that?" she whispered.

Arin nodded slowly.

Something moved in the shadows between the trees.

Then another.

And another.

From the darkness stepped the same creatures they had seen the night before—shadow beasts with glowing red eyes and jagged shapes like living smoke.

Arin's heart started pounding.

"They found us already…"

The traveler lifted his staff. "Stay focused. These creatures are drawn to the emerald's power inside you."

One of the creatures let out a terrible screech and lunged forward.

Arin reacted without thinking.

Green light burst from his hands again.

The energy struck the creature and sent it flying backward into a tree. The impact shook the forest floor.

But more creatures were coming.

Three of them surrounded the group.

Arin clenched his fists. The power inside him pulsed again, stronger this time.

"I won't run," he said.

Mira grabbed a fallen branch and stood beside him. "Good. Because I'm not running either."

Another creature rushed toward them.

Arin stepped forward and focused on the strange energy he felt inside. The warmth in his chest spread into his arms.

Then—

A bright green flash exploded outward.

The shockwave pushed the creatures away and scattered leaves into the air like a storm.

For a moment, everything went silent.

The shadow beasts slowly faded into black mist and disappeared.

Arin dropped to one knee, breathing heavily.

"That… took a lot out of me."

Mira quickly helped him up. "You did great!"

The traveler watched carefully, his expression thoughtful.

"Your power is growing faster than I expected," he said.

Arin wiped sweat from his forehead. "Growing? That felt more like barely surviving."

"Every Guardian must learn through struggle," the traveler replied. "The Master Emerald is testing you."

Arin looked toward the distant mountains again.

Far above them, the floating island glimmered faintly in the sky.

"I guess we should keep moving then," he said.

But deep within the forest, someone else had been watching the battle.

A tall figure stood hidden behind the trees, his cloak dark as night. His eyes glowed faintly red.

"So this is the new Guardian…" the man whispered.

He smiled coldly.

"Interesting."

The figure turned and vanished into the shadows.

Back on the road, Arin suddenly felt a chill run down his spine.

He stopped walking.

"What's wrong?" Mira asked.

Arin looked back toward the forest.

"I feel like… someone is watching us."

The traveler nodded slowly.

"That feeling will only grow stronger," he said. "Because the enemies of the Master Emerald have finally discovered you."

The wind picked up again.

And somewhere far ahead, the floating island pulsed with green light.

Their journey had only just begun.
