Chapter 7 - Battle in the Shadows

The forest had grown unnaturally quiet.

Yun and Sharma moved carefully between the trees, their footsteps light and almost soundless. The deeper they went, the clearer the sound became. It was sharp, heavy, and filled with force.

It was not wind. It was not movement.

It was the sound of impact. Combat.

Yun raised his hand slightly, signaling Sharma to stop. Both of them lowered themselves behind a cluster of large rocks, their bodies hidden within the shadows.

"Stay low," Yun whispered.

Sharma nodded, his eyes already fixed ahead, sharp and alert.

They leaned forward carefully.

What they saw was not just a fight. It was something far beyond it.

Two figures stood in the clearing.

One of them wore dark clothing that blended perfectly into the surroundings. His posture was calm, controlled, and precise. Every small movement hinted at years of training. A presence built for killing.

The other stood openly, dressed in white. His stance was relaxed, almost careless, yet there was something deeply unsettling about him. He wasn't on guard because he didn't need to be.

For a brief moment, neither of them moved.

Then the ninja stepped forward.

He was known among certain circles as Rinma.

Fast. Inhumanly fast.

His body vanished from its position and reappeared inches away from his opponent, his hand already moving toward the warrior's chest in a killing strike.

But the warrior simply shifted. A slight movement. Nothing more.

The attack missed.

Yun narrowed his eyes. "That speed…"

Sharma's voice dropped. "And he still dodged it."

Rinma didn't stop. He attacked again, faster and stronger. His strikes came from different angles, his hands and feet moving in perfect coordination. Each movement aimed at vital points. Each attack designed to end the fight quickly.

But the warrior avoided everything.

Every step. Every shift. Every movement.

Effortless.

Like he had already seen everything before it happened.

"He's reading him," Yun murmured.

"No," Sharma replied quietly. "He's dominating him."

Suddenly, the warrior moved.

A single step forward. His body twisted sharply, and his elbow drove toward Rinma's head with explosive force.

Rinma reacted instantly. Both arms raised, he blocked the strike. The impact echoed through the clearing like thunder.

But before he could reposition, a fist drove into his stomach.

Hard.

The force pushed Rinma backward. His body bent slightly as he slid across the ground before regaining his footing.

Yun felt the shock of that strike even from a distance. "That hit wasn't normal…"

Rinma stood still for a moment. His breathing changed, heavier but controlled. Focused.

His expression shifted. The calm mask disappeared, replaced by pure intent.

"You've changed," Rinma said quietly.

The warrior stepped forward, unfazed. "And you haven't."

Then something changed.

The air itself seemed to tighten.

A dark energy began to gather around Rinma, spreading slowly like smoke. It was not chaotic. It was controlled, dense, and cold.

Yun's eyes sharpened. "That energy…"

Sharma leaned forward slightly. "He's serious now."

Rinma lowered his stance.

Then he moved.

This time, his speed was different.

He did not just move fast. He disappeared between moments.

Energy formed between his hands, twisting and compressing until it became unstable. Then he released it.

A wave of dark energy surged forward.

The ground cracked instantly. The air shook. Dust exploded into the sky.

Yun raised his arm to shield his face. "That's powerful…"

The shockwave passed. The dust settled.

The warrior was still standing.

Unharmed.

Not even a scratch.

Sharma's voice dropped to a whisper. "That's impossible…"

The warrior let out a quiet laugh. "That's all?"

He stepped forward. "You've gotten weaker, Rinma."

Yun memorized the name.

Rinma.

But something felt wrong.

Rinma wasn't angry. He wasn't afraid.

He was smiling.

"Why is he smiling?" Yun whispered.

In the next moment, Rinma vanished.

Not movement. Not speed.

Absence.

Then he appeared behind the warrior. A strike followed instantly.

The warrior turned. He blocked. He countered. He missed. He adapted.

The fight changed completely.

There was no hesitation. No testing. No restraint.

They clashed again and again.

Their movements became faster, sharper, more dangerous. Fists collided with explosive force. Kicks sliced through the air. Their bodies twisted and shifted with deadly precision.

The forest began to break under the pressure. Trees cracked. The ground split. The air trembled violently.

Yun couldn't look away. "This is on another level…"

Sharma nodded slowly. "This is real combat."

The warrior stepped forward with a knee strike aimed at Rinma's chest. Rinma twisted mid-air, avoiding it by inches before landing and attacking again without pause.

The warrior blocked. He countered. He missed. He adapted.

They separated briefly.

Both breathing heavier now.

But neither was tired.

They were focused.

"You've improved," the warrior said.

Rinma tilted his head slightly. "And you've become predictable."

Silence filled the clearing.

The air tightened.

They moved again.

But Yun stepped back.

"That's enough."

Sharma frowned. "What?"

"If we stay any longer, they'll notice us."

Sharma hesitated, then exhaled. "Fine."

They retreated silently and carefully, disappearing back into the forest.

Only when they were far enough did they stop.

The sounds of battle faded behind them.

"That was insane," Sharma said.

Yun nodded. "They're far beyond us."

A brief silence passed.

"I'm going back," Sharma said.

"To your hideout?" Yun asked.

Sharma nodded. "I need to train."

Yun gave a faint smile. "Me too."

They exchanged one last look, then turned in opposite directions.

Yun made his way toward his grandfather's hidden shelter. The forest felt different now, heavier and more real.

When he arrived, the entrance revealed itself as usual. He stepped inside.

His grandfather was waiting.

"I need to get stronger," Yun said calmly.

The old man studied him, then nodded. "Good."

He stepped closer. "But strength without control is meaningless."

Yun remained silent.

"Sit."

Yun obeyed.

"Close your eyes."

He did.

"Feel the energy inside you. Do not force it. Do not release it. Control it."

Yun focused slowly and deeply.

For the first time, he wasn't fighting.

He was learning.

Far away, the battlefield had grown silent.

The warrior stood alone, watching the shadows.

A faint smile appeared on his face. "You held back."

From the darkness, a voice replied, "And you didn't."

Silence returned.

Only two names remained.

Rinma. Mark.
