Chapter 6 - Chapter 5 — Ripples After the Storm

The academy felt different after the Storm Run.

Not drastically.

Most students were still laughing in the dorm halls, complaining about sore legs, and arguing over who actually placed higher in the race.

But small changes had begun.

Students started watching each other more carefully.

Evaluating.

Comparing.

The first sparks of competition had appeared.

And at the center of many whispered conversations was a single name.

Raizen.

The Morning After

Rain fell lightly over Kumogakure the next morning.

Raizen sat quietly in the academy dining hall finishing breakfast while Daigo dramatically stretched beside him.

"I can't feel my legs."

"You said that yesterday."

"I mean it this time."

Akari sat across from them, shaking her head.

"You're weak."

Daigo glared.

"You almost fell off the rope bridge."

"I slipped once."

"Twice."

Raizen watched the conversation quietly.

These small moments were becoming routine.

Friendship forming naturally.

Inside his mind Astra spoke.

"Observation: social bonds strengthening."

Raizen sipped his tea.

"That's what friends do."

The Student Who Watched

Across the dining hall another student sat alone.

He had sharp amber eyes and dark hair tied into a short tail behind his head.

Unlike most students, he wasn't talking.

He was observing.

Watching.

His gaze occasionally drifted toward Raizen.

Then back to the window.

Inside the academy faculty balcony above the hall, Instructor Tetsuya noticed the same thing.

Two students already standing apart from the others.

Interesting.

New Lessons Begin

Later that morning the class gathered on the training field.

Instructor Tetsuya stood before them holding several scrolls.

"Today we begin mission simulation training."

The students immediately straightened.

Mission training was one of the most exciting parts of academy life.

Tetsuya placed a map on a wooden board.

"Shinobi rarely work alone."

He pointed toward several marked locations.

"You will form teams and complete objectives."

Some students grinned.

Others looked nervous.

"Your goal is simple," Tetsuya continued.

"Escort a supply scroll across the training forest without losing it."

He paused.

"Other teams will attempt to steal it."

The field instantly erupted with excited chatter.

Daigo leaned toward Raizen.

"This is basically war."

"Not quite."

"But close."

Team Formation

The instructor began assigning teams.

"Team One: Akari, Ren, and Sora."

"Team Two: Daigo, Raizen, and—"

He paused briefly.

"—Kaito."

The amber-eyed boy from the dining hall stepped forward.

Raizen noticed immediately.

This was the student who had been watching him earlier.

Kaito met his gaze calmly.

Then nodded slightly.

Daigo whispered.

"He looks serious."

Raizen simply replied:

"Good."

The Simulation Begins

The academy forest training area spread across a large valley below the campus cliffs.

Dense trees and rocky terrain created perfect conditions for stealth exercises.

Raizen's team received the supply scroll.

Daigo held it up proudly.

"I'm the courier!"

Kaito spoke for the first time.

"You're loud."

Daigo blinked.

"…Fair."

Raizen studied the terrain.

Several narrow paths wound through the forest.

But something felt off.

Astra confirmed it immediately.

"Probability of ambush on main routes: high."

Raizen pointed toward a less obvious direction.

"We go that way."

Kaito raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

"Fewer footprints."

Kaito studied him carefully.

Then nodded.

"Agreed."

Daigo shrugged.

"Cool."

Akari's Discovery

Meanwhile, Akari's team moved through the opposite side of the forest.

During the Storm Run she had noticed something interesting.

Her throws with smaller weapons were good.

But she lacked reach.

Distance.

Range.

She spotted a fallen branch near the trail.

Without thinking, she picked it up and shaped it roughly.

Then she tied a string from her pouch between the ends.

Ren watched curiously.

"You're making a bow."

Akari pulled the makeshift string slightly.

"Maybe."

She picked up a small stone.

Pulled the string back.

Released.

The stone flew forward and struck a tree several meters away.

Her eyes widened slightly.

"…That might work."

Daigo's Fighting Instinct

Back on Raizen's team, they encountered their first attackers.

Two students jumped from the trees attempting to grab the supply scroll.

Daigo reacted instantly.

But instead of simply punching or blocking…

He moved unpredictably.

Shifting angles.

Using momentum from his opponent's attack.

The motion almost resembled a flowing dance.

Even Daigo looked surprised by what he just did.

Raizen noticed immediately.

Interesting.

Inside his mind Astra spoke.

"Combat pattern irregular but effective."

Raizen smiled slightly.

Daigo had instinct.

He just didn't realize it yet.

The First Hint of Steel

Later that afternoon the mission simulation ended successfully.

Raizen's team returned with the scroll intact.

As students gathered near the training field, one of the older academy assistants walked by carrying a rack of practice weapons.

Among them were several short training blades.

Wooden practice swords.

Raizen paused.

His eyes followed the movement of the blades instinctively.

Not curiosity.

Recognition.

The assistant set the rack down.

One of the swords slid slightly out of place.

Without thinking, Raizen stepped forward.

Caught it.

Adjusted its balance in his hand.

Then returned it smoothly to the rack.

The motion was natural.

Effortless.

Instructor Tetsuya, standing nearby, noticed.

He said nothing.

But his eyes narrowed slightly.

The Rival Steps Forward

As students began leaving the field, Kaito stopped beside Raizen.

"You crossed the Storm Run bridge faster than anyone."

Raizen shrugged.

"Balance training."

Kaito studied him for a moment.

Then spoke calmly.

"I'll beat you next time."

Daigo grinned.

"Ooooh rivalry."

Raizen smiled faintly.

"I look forward to it."

Kaito nodded once.

Then walked away.

The first real rivalry had begun.

Evening at the Dorms

That night the dormitory halls buzzed with energy.

Students argued over the mission results.

Others bragged about their combat victories.

Akari excitedly described her bow experiment.

Daigo attempted to recreate his strange combat movement and nearly fell over.

Raizen sat by the dorm window watching lightning flash across the distant mountains.

Inside his mind Astra spoke.

"Host environment becoming increasingly competitive."

Raizen nodded slightly.

"Good."

He looked out over the academy grounds.

Hundreds of young shinobi were training beneath the storm clouds.

Among them were the individuals who would one day shape Kumogakure's future.

The generation that history would remember.

The Seven Stars.

And their journey had only just begun.
