Chapter 8 - Chapter 7 — The One Who Walks Like a Predator

Morning clouds drifted low across Kumogakure's cliffs, thin streaks of mist sliding between the academy towers.

Students had gathered in the main courtyard before classes, something that rarely happened unless an announcement was coming.

Or a fight.

The quiet murmur of voices filled the air.

"That's them."

"They look older."

"I heard their clan trains with summons."

Raizen stood near the edge of the crowd beside Daigo and Akari, hands resting calmly in the pockets of his academy jacket.

Daigo leaned forward slightly.

"So… that's the transfer?"

Akari crossed her arms.

"They don't look that scary."

The academy gates opened.

The murmuring stopped almost immediately.

The new student walked in slowly, footsteps steady against the stone path.

They were slightly taller than most of the class, lean and balanced, their posture relaxed in a way that suggested control rather than arrogance.

Their uniform was dark gray rather than the academy blue most students wore.

Subtle claw-shaped stitching ran along the sleeves.

Their hair was midnight black, tied loosely behind their head.

But their eyes were what caught attention.

Gold.

Sharp and alert, like a hunter measuring distance before striking.

Instructor Tetsuya stepped forward.

"This student transferred from a satellite clan compound outside the main village."

He paused briefly.

"Meet Nekuro Kairo."

The name moved through the courtyard like wind through tall grass.

Several students reacted immediately.

That was a name people recognized.

Even Raizen had heard it before.

The Shirogane Clan.

One of Kumogakure's smaller combat clans known for their animal-like taijutsu and heightened senses.

Not as famous as the great clans of other villages.

But dangerous.

Very dangerous.

Kairo stepped forward slightly, scanning the gathered students.

The way their gaze moved wasn't random.

It was deliberate.

Measured.

Predatory.

Their eyes passed over Daigo.

Paused briefly on Akari.

Then stopped completely when they reached Raizen.

Just for a moment.

A faint smile appeared.

Raizen noticed immediately.

Inside his mind Astra spoke quietly.

"Subject exhibits focused attention toward host."

Raizen's lips curved slightly.

"Yeah… I noticed."

First Impressions

Classes resumed soon after the introduction, but the atmosphere had shifted.

The classroom felt different.

Sharper.

Everyone had become a little more aware of the people around them.

Instructor Tetsuya wrote chakra control diagrams across the board while students copied notes.

But several glances kept drifting toward the new arrival.

Kairo sat near the window.

Silent.

Watching.

At one point Daigo leaned over toward Raizen.

"Do you feel that?"

"Feel what?"

"Like… someone staring."

Raizen didn't even turn his head.

"Probably."

Training Field

Later that afternoon the class gathered at the weapon training range.

Wooden targets lined the far wall while practice weapons rested in racks along the side.

Akari stood several steps back from the other students.

Her bow rested in her hand, the wood still slightly rough from being newly crafted.

Ren stood nearby adjusting throwing knives.

"You're going to use that in class?"

Akari pulled an arrow from her quiver.

"Why not?"

She drew the string back.

Released.

The arrow struck the target with a sharp thunk.

Not the center.

But close enough that several students looked over.

Daigo whistled.

"Okay that's cool."

Akari smirked slightly.

Raizen noticed something interesting though.

Her grip tightened slightly every time she released.

He leaned closer.

"You're overcompensating."

Akari glanced sideways.

"You always say that."

"Because you always do it."

She sighed.

"Fine. What should I do then?"

Raizen adjusted her wrist slightly.

"Relax the fingers."

She tried again.

This time the arrow struck even closer to the center ring.

Akari blinked.

"…Okay don't stop talking."

The Predator Moves

Across the training yard Kairo stood beside the taijutsu ring.

Several students had gathered around already.

Daigo nudged Raizen.

"Oh this should be good."

Kairo stepped into the circle.

One of the older academy students stepped forward confidently.

"Want to spar?"

Kairo shrugged.

"If you want."

The match began.

The older student attacked first with a straight punch.

Kairo didn't block.

Didn't counter.

They simply shifted slightly to the side.

Their body rotated just enough that the punch passed harmlessly by.

Then Kairo moved.

Fast.

Not explosive like most students.

Smooth.

Fluid.

Their movements resembled an animal circling prey.

One quick strike tapped the opponent's shoulder.

Then another touched their side.

Three points.

Match over.

The entire thing lasted maybe five seconds.

Daigo's jaw dropped.

"…Okay that was cool."

Raizen watched carefully.

Inside his mind Astra recorded the motion patterns.

"Subject combat style resembles predatory animal movement patterns."

Raizen nodded slightly.

"Like a cat."

After Training

Students slowly began leaving the training yard as the afternoon ended.

The sky above Kumogakure had darkened again, heavy storm clouds gathering along the mountain peaks.

Raizen walked toward the dorm buildings when footsteps approached from behind.

Kairo.

They stopped beside him casually.

"You're the one who crossed the bridge during the Storm Run."

Raizen shrugged.

"Maybe."

Kairo tilted their head slightly.

"You move like someone who's trained longer than the academy teaches."

"Observation is a useful skill."

Kairo golden eyes narrowed slightly.

Then they smiled.

"Good."

They turned and began walking toward the dormitory buildings.

Halfway down the path they stopped.

Without turning around, they spoke again.

"I hope you're strong."

Raizen raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

Kairo glanced back over their shoulder.

"Because weak rivals are boring."

Then they continued walking.

Nightfall

The dormitory roof was quiet that night.

Clouds drifted slowly across the sky while lightning flickered far away along the horizon.

Raizen stood near the edge looking out over the academy grounds.

Training fields.

Dorm buildings.

Students moving between them like small sparks of life in the growing darkness.

Inside his mind Astra spoke.

"New subject presents elevated competitive threat level."

Raizen crossed his arms.

"Good."

Another flash of lightning illuminated the mountains.

Somewhere in the academy dorms, Kiba sat by a window watching the same storm clouds.

Two young shinobi.

Two future legends.

And neither of them planned to lose.
